Long's Peak Hike 2012
Select the "720p HD" setting to watch. Testing out how GoPro footage would look on a Colorado hike, I threw together this short piece. It shows the beauty of the mountain trail and the Colorado wilderness while attempting to show some of the difficulties the Long's Peak Class 3 Trail presents. Overall, great hike, difficult 14er, and fun time. Music courtesy of Whiskey Autumn, "Who Said Love Had To Be Grim." www.whiskeyautumn.com

Over Longs Peak
Longs Peak is an icon among 14ers in Colorado. It is the one - and most times the only - mountain that many aspire to climb. And make no mistake, it is a climb. It was the first 14er I ever climbed back in 2001. These are aerials edited to poetry read by former Colorado poet laureate and Colorado State University English professor Mary Crow and music from the soundtrack to Slumdog Millilonaire. This video is dedicated to the memory of Kelly Westra with much thanks to her husband Rich Westra. Rich, Nancy & I will never forget this day.

High Park Fire Video from Longs Peak Summit
June 9, Jim Davidson and I climbed to the summit of Longs Peak, 14256' in Rocky Mountain National Park. We had a perfect day albeit a bit windy in the morning but no clouds, or thunderstorms and warm temps. The entire climb we watched a billowing smoke plume develop back towards Ft. Collins and once on the summit learned it had grown from 2 to 4000 acres. The enjoyment of the summit was tempered by the reality of the devastation that huge fires like this one brings to communities and the uncertainty of where it would grow. Also on out minds were the brave firefighters who would risk their lives for our safety. Now 24 hours later it has grown to over 8000 acres, is out of control with 0 containment and large scale evacuations. See my latest photo history on my public FB page at www.facebook.com Latest update as of June 11, mid morning: helicopters flying overhead with water and retardant, 37000 acres (57.8 sq miles, 15000 hectares), zero containment, 400 firefighters, hundred evacuated, out of control, approaching Ft. Collins northwestern city limits, growing at 20 to 40 feet a minute.

Colorado 14er Longs Peak
On July 28, 2011 - I got to go hike a 14er with my good friends Drew Denton and Clay Fequa. We set out at 4:20am from Fort Collins, CO for the Long's Peak trail head in Estes Park, CO. Arriving at 6am we began hiking immediately and made it to the summit around 10am. We were told the average hike takes 12hrs. round trip, meaning that it should take 7hrs. to summit. I was able to summit in 3hrs 51min. and Drew and Clay in less than 5hrs. We passed many hikers who had set out at 2:30am that morning in order to be off the mountain before potential afternoon thunderstorms. We were told that it is not wise to be caught at 11000+ ft. with lightning in the air. Ironically, it took us longer to descend than the ascent. Clay got altitude sickness and it took him & Drew over 6hrs. to get down the mountain. I took a backside route that had no trails and it took me 5hrs. to make it back to the trail head where I providentially intersected with Drew & Clay. We enjoyed hiking the remaining miles together and all agreed this was by far the most strenuous hike we had ever undertaken!

Slackline Highlining at 14000 feet on Longs Peak, Colorado
Here I was, huffing and puffing my way to the top of Longs Peak (4435 metres / 14255 feet) only to look down, from the summit, to see Scott walking a slackline a few hundred feet below me over what is affectionately known as "The Notch" - Simply amazing!! I never got to meet Scott, close up (the gulf between our two points on the mountain was huge!), but I did yell down to him that I'd be posting this on YouTube under something like "tightrope" - he yelled back up to remind me that he preferred I use the word "slackline" so I made a point of googling the term first thing when I got home and posted the information further below in this description. The day after I posted this video Scott found it and provided this comment: "Thanks for posting!! nice to 'meet' you from across the mountain! All highlines are similar, but each has it's unique attributes. This one, of course is particularly significant to us. The rigging is fairly complicated, and requires a bit of rappelling & ascending of rope, and climbing of 5th class pitches. As you have already said, it's a bit challenging to get around, but ultimately worth it!!" Here's Scott's YouTube channel: www.youtube.com Here's what I found on Wikipedia, bout Slacklining and Highlining, before Scott was able to respond to my video posting: "Slacklining is a practice in balance that typically uses nylon webbing tensioned between two anchor points. Many people suggest Slacklining is distinct from tightrope walking in that the line <b>...</b>

Longs Peak - Keyhole Ridge (II 5.5)
This is a video I shot of a climb of Keyhole Ridge on Longs Peak, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado, USA (September 2, 2006). It was a fun climb in a spectacular setting though it turned out to be a lot easier than we thought it would be (at least with the variation we took by passing the second tower on the west side). We ended up only roping up for one pitch, and even that was only about 20' of 5.5 climbing. Fabio lead it and placed 1 nut and slung two horns - that was all the pro we needed for the entire day! It was still fun though and we couldn't have asked for better weather.

Dream Music: Part II is a musical voyage into the depths of the subconscious. This lyrical narrative reflects on the perception of time within dreams and waking life. Filmed on location in 2 states over the course of 6 months, we explored our new production technique of what we call 'lyric-lapsing', to achieve the surrealistic feeling of movement. We built upon the foundation of Part 1 with ambitious ideas that usually took around 6-8 hours of work for 3-4 seconds of footage. Our goal was to pioneer a new film genre by telling a story through art and music. Part 2 was made to transport the viewer from their own reality into a world of dreams and at the end, they awake to wonder how we were able to take them there. Each scene was born from the symbolic meaning of the lyrics and overall message of the film; Time is the illusion within the dream of life.

Featured on National Geographic: http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2011/08/15/new-astro-timelapse-video-the-island-showcases-astronomy-haven/ thanks to NG, awesome!
Imagine the world's largest volcanic erosion crater. Then imagine an island with an incredible area to height ratio: low area of 708 square km and the 12 km wide "caldera de taburiente" with it's 2445 m high roque de los muchachos peak... or the near 2000 m high Deseada volcanic twin peaks on the ruta de los Volcanes... Combine that with beautiful starry skies - and you have La Palma (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Palma).
My new TimeLapse project "The Island" is dedicated to this beautiful and lovely Island of the Canaries... Note: this is my second TL project, the first one - "Black Hole Sun" - was reviewed nicely on NAT GEO daily news http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/2011/05/26/new-mountain-timelapse-a-soundgarden-of-night-lights/)
"The Island" was filmed by me alone during the first week of August 2011, less than 10 hrs sleep the whole week!
Making-of images: http://www.flickr.com/photos/vertrider/sets/72157627278118235/with/6029262243/
About the project:
I have been to Palma many times for mountain biking and hiking in the past and have written some travel articles about the Island which hosts a spanish national park ("Caldera de Taburiente") and a UNESCO biosphere reservate ("Los Tilos Rainforest". It is a little paradise by itself - for nature lovers and hikers with a faible for dramatic landscapes and climatic zones, that change on every meter of ascent / descent.
I always tried to cover the beauty of it's incredible landscape and endemic nature at day and night with still images - a TimeLapse showing it's celestial beauties matched to the dramatic volcanic landscapes was always a dream, that was slowly getting real, after I had finished "Black Hole Sun" and gained knowledge about landscape TimeLapse photography. As a member of the Instructor team of the Austrian Summit Club and Landscape photographer I love to be outdoors in the Mountains anyway at all times. So this project was always welcome!
La Palma has not only beautiful day landscapes to offer, it is one of the top six places on Earth to view the Night skies and hosts the worlds largest single aperture optical telescope (GTC - grantecan, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roque_de_los_Muchachos_Observatory).
Now during a week of new moon I was finally able to cover most of the scenery I had in mind in TimeLapse technique.
About the production: Astrolandscape TimeLapse is equipment intensive. It was one of the most intense experiences ever in regards of
- carrying around the equipment on the volcanic mountains...
- 4 Nikon DLSR (1 x D3s, D700, 2 x D7000)
- 6 Nikon Pro Lenses (10/2.8 DX, 2 x 14-24/2.8, 24-70/2.8, 50/1.4, 24/1.4)
- up to 5 Manfrotto/Tripods
- Stage Zero Dynamic Perception Dolly
- Orion Astronomic Head
- AstroTrac TT320X-AG
- Rechargeable Batteries, Batteries, Batteries
- VauDe Mountaineering Equipment
- Water / Food / iPad with astronomical software*
- RedBull, RedBull, RedBull
- MacBook Pro**
... but it also has been some of the best times enjoying one of the most dramatic landscapes imaginable in all it's beauty, including unforgettable sunsets, moonsets and sunrises, countless meteor streak sightings (I stopped counting after about 50...) and an eternal Milky Way amazingly glowing from the starry night sky.
Other than in Central Europe (see my other project "Black Hole Sun" http://vimeo.com/24149087) on La Palma's Mountains and in the south, one can truly differentiate the Milky Ways dark dust regions just by eye - no camera needed. It is an incredible view, I tried to capture the best I can. Under these starry skies, and this incredible, eternal glowing band of our galaxy, one can feel the time - directly and pure. It is furthemore a totally silent landscape, dark and mysterious. Only noises from time to time are from the wind touching the big century old pine trees making for a very own orchestral sound.
I am for sure not the most religious person, but if you experience this remarkable landscape and the glowing skies above, there is to say that God had a good day when he created La Palma.
But Nature on La Palma can be harsh and dangerous too: it showed it's strengths more than once with strong to severe winds (up to appr. 70 km/h) on the volcanic ridges. While I of course know that staying on the Cumbre Vieja or the Roque at stormy winds is not the best idea - if there is clear sky and you have to take footage on your planned timed/locations, you have to cope with it, no workaround.
This made it partly quite tough to film - add to that the nights alone in darkness with boosting winds. I could only use the tent twice and on the other days had to seek shelter behind rocks. And La Palma's mountains are really DARK, with only the starry sky above. While I am used to stay out alone on the mountains to capture night skies for Ast

Altissimo. Changes in pace. A timelapse short film
A timelapse meditation at 3000m.
Polish cinematographer and filmmaker Patryk Kizny teamed up with cinematographer Robert Paluch and Swiss cinematographer Fabian Weber to create a breathtaking meditative short film showcasing the beauty of Swiss Alps under rapidly changing weather conditions.
Amazing views of boiling clouds from the highest mountain peaks, landscapes of the glacier of SaasFee and other locations develop into much more abstract audio-visual form along with the weather changes. The film is also a tribute to free of light pollution places featuring fantastic views of the MilkyWay.
The short timelapse film “Altissimo” has been shot entirely in motion-controlled timelapse technique. The team shot over 45 000 single frames (over 700 GB of RAW data) using a few cameras in various locations of Switzerland during a one-week stay in Switzerland in May, 20111.
If you look carefully, you’ll discover that a very long timelapse sequence spanning across over 2 days has been used, although it was cut for dramatic purposes.

|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
UPDATE ON FEB. 20TH 2010
I took some time (very little) to write out the commentary for those of you who can’t understand German. Keep in mind I’m not a native speaker myself. There are also a few parts that make little sense because the commentary itself is a bit dodgy.
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Doesn’t matter if it’s keeping straight ahead or doing wiggly lines, seems to be no problem for the skater in this video.
He definitely has a hard time balancing, but he isn’t falling.
This mega-grind takes unbelievable 40 seconds to complete.
But is this really possible without cheating somehow? We’re showing the video to a few passerbys to find out what they’re thinking.
»I don’t think this is possible. The rail is too long.«
»Well, what he does is definitely crazy, but... I think it’s possible.«
»I don’t think one can keep it’s balance for this long. Because looking at skateboarders I realised they can only grind a few meters and that’s it...«
»Could be possible actually...«
»No, this doesn’t work...« »No, not for that long.«
»He can’t go through the curves, he can only drive (lol) straight...«
The passengers are doubtful, but what do actual rollerbladers think?
We’re starting to look for some of them in the streets but realize the bad weather has given the cool guys (lol) a hard time lately.
The next skatepark is 40 kilometers (25 miles) afar from Munich.
We meet Nicolas, 17 years old, and Konstantin, also 17 years old. Both have been in the game for four years.
Short grinds on stairs, rails and quoins (lol) are part of the trick repertoire of both of them. But is it possible to grind a rail that long as seen in the video, or is it a fake? What do they think?
»Well, one could try it...«
»Well, it is definitely possible, but it is also very difficult to do.«
Both of them agree it’s possible. With a lot of practice basically everything could be grinded. It shouldn’t be that hard theoretically. (lol)
»There are two differnet spots on our skates we can grind on. One is in between the middle wheels of the frame and one is on the soulplate. That’s basically the outside edge of the boot on which you can grind a rail like this.«
If one is practicing long enough something like the grind shown in the video should be possible, we recall. As long as one isn’t losing interest in getting better, that is.
Quitting seems highly likely because slams, pain and scary moments are undoubtedly a big part of this activity. Skaters must have the ability to take a beating, and the next harsh slam can happen to them almost every moment.
»The greatest risk while attempting a grind is not locking onto the obstacle properly or having the wheels bite the rail, which can make you hit the ground pretty hard resulting in severe pain.«
»As a beginner, you’re eating shit on the regular.«
Konstantin and Nicolas both agree with each other: only the best in the world can perform a grind as seen in the video.
We’re having a closer look on the video. At the end of it the name „Chris Haffey“ is shown.
It turns out that this guy is one of the best rollerbladers in the world.
To visit him, we have to reach over the pond leaving the winterly Munich for sunny California.
Chris calls Long Beach his home.
We’re starting our quest in the largest skatepark in town. This place is crowded, but most of the kids are skateborders.
But after a while we’re spotting this group of rollerbladers in the halfpipe. (lulz) It’s obvious at first sight: these guys are on top of their game!
We’re showing them the video. Do they know Chris, the skater in the video? Have they heard of the video? (TEH ROOTZ?)
»Sure, that’s the 666 rail.«
»What does 666 mean?«
»Well, that’s the lenght of the rail. 666 feet. But I suggest you ask Chris here, he’s the guy in the video eventually.«
»Is this you in the video?«
»Yes, this must have been 8 or 9 years ago. I was 15 at that time.«
»Do you think you still got it?«
»Sure. It’s been a while, but I should be able to do it.«
We still doubt we’ve found him this quick.
But Chris convinces us in a heartbeat. Jumps like this can only be performed by one of the best bladers in the world.
The grinds in the skatepark are no big deal for Chris.
But what about t
