14. The Mother of All Forums: Civic Architecture in Rome under Trajan
Roman Architecture (HSAR 252) Professor Kleiner analyzes the major public architectural commissions of the emperor Trajan in Rome. Distinguished by their remarkably ambitious scale, these buildings mimic Trajan's expansion of the Roman Empire to its furthest reaches. Professor Kleiner begins with Trajan's restoration of the Forum of Julius Caesar and proceeds to the Baths of Trajan. Situated on the Oppian and Esquiline Hills, these Trajanic baths follow the basic model of the earlier imperial Baths of Titus but increase the size of the complex several times. Most of the lecture focuses on the famous Forum and Markets of Trajan, built on land that the engineer and architect Apollodorus of Damascus created by cutting away part of the Quirinal Hill. The Forum of Trajan consists of a large open rectangular area, a basilica, Greek and Latin libraries, and a temple dedicated to Trajan after his death. Between the libraries stands the celebrated Column of Trajan with a spiral frieze commemorating the emperor's military victories in Dacia (modern Romania) and reaching a height of 125 feet. The brick-faced concrete Markets of Trajan climb up the hill and form a dramatic contrast to the marble forum. The lecture concludes with a brief discussion of the Arch of Trajan at Benevento, which depicts scenes of the emperor's greatest accomplishments and the first representations of his successor, Hadrian. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Trajan's Column / Dacian Wars Romanian History Dacians
Trajan's Column is a Roman triumphal column in Rome which commemorates Roman emperor Trajan's victory in the Dacian Wars. It is located in Trajan's Forum, built near the Quirinal Hill, north of the Roman Forum. Completed in 113 CE, the freestanding column is most famous for its spiral bas relief, that artistically describes the epic wars between the Romans and Dacians (101--102 and 105--106). Its design has inspired numerous victory columns, both ancient and modern. Inhabited by the ancient Dacians, today's territory of Romania was conquered by the Roman Empire in 106, when Trajan's army defeated the army of Dacia's ruler Decebalus ( Dacian Wars). The Roman administration withdrew two centuries later, under the pressure of the Goths and Carpi. The Romanian people was formed by the Romanization of the Roman Province of Dacia. The Romanians are descended from local populations: Dacians (Getae, Thracians) and Roman legionnaires and colonists. In the course of the two wars with the Roman legions, between 101 - 102 AD and. 105 - 106 AD respectively, the emperor Trajan succeeded after in defeating the Dacians and the greatest part of Dacia became a Roman province. The colonization with Roman or Romanized elements, the use of the Latin language and the assimilation of Roman civilization as well as the intense development of urban centres led to the Romanization of the autochthonous population. The intermarriage of Dacians with Roman colonists, formed the Daco-Roman population ...

AC: Brotherhood - Trajan Market HD
One of the two bonus missions that came with the Codex Edition. The other one is Aqueduct, and can be watched here: www.youtube.com This video is spoiler-free. Things to notice: 00:56 - Smooth talking there. 01:56 - I was looking forward to enjoy the scenery on a slow pace, but clearly I am out of luck. 02:51 - I didn't even notice the lamp here. I thought I'd fall down a level and have to retrace my steps. Usually I'm not too good at these chase parts, and I swear this is the first time I played this part, so I'm making things up as I go. 04:14 - Grrrrr get back here! 06:46 - Noticed the treasure here, but couldn't be bothered to spend more than 5 seconds to figure out how to get to it. 07:21 - Treasure time! OvO 07:35 - Idk why Ezio isn't a greed and only takes a handful. I wouldn't have left a single coin behind wtf.

Nerva and Trajan: Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Chapter 3 Part 2
More details at historybooksreview.blogspot.com This is a bit better than the first part, but I am still struggling with the technology so hopefully there will be more improvement to come. Nerva and Trajan were the first two of the five good emperors. Trajan was both popular and successful and it was under him that the empire reached its greatest extent. This is part of a video series following Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

Trajan's Column (The Urban Simulation Team at UCLA)
An early reconstruction model of Trajan's Forum was developed in 1996-1997 in conjunction with the J. Paul Getty Trust for an exhibition entitled 'Beyond Beauty: Antiquities as Evidence.' This clip illustrates the power of computer modeling by allowing the viewer to spiral around Trajan's Column and examine the sculpted scenes illustrating Trajan's campaigns in the Dacian Wars. The Urban Simulation Team at UCLA is a research group exploring applications for real-time visual simulation in architectural design, urban planning, emergency response, and education.
