Vimeo is a friendly place where people who take and love videos can share, watch, discover, and be inspired.
- How do I pronounce Vimeo? #
-
Vim (rhymes with him) ee (rhymes with bee) oh (rhymes with go). Vim-ee-oh is the correct pronunciation. It's like video with a "me." Or just try your best!
- Will Vimeo always be free? #

- How do I get involved in the Vimeo Community? #
-
One of the best aspects of Vimeo is our friendly community. Participating in the community is completely optional but we think you'll find it worthwhile.
The best way to get started is to upload something you've created. Vimeo Members will see you're an interesting and creative individual just like them. You should also watch videos and give feedback. When you're perusing Vimeo and you encounter a video you like, leave a comment. Tell that person what you think, why you like the video, or even what you think might help make it better. You can also click the 'Like' button to show your appreciation. Not only does this give the owner of the clip a good feeling, but now they're also more likely to check out your videos in return. Then, if they comment on and 'Like' your clips, your videos will be brought to the attention of their contacts, which will help increase the amount of views and activity your clips receive.
Follow people! If you see someone's videos you like, go ahead and follow them. That way you'll see what they upload as well as the videos they 'Like' on Vimeo. The more you interact, the more members of the community you'll meet.
Get involved in the Community Forums. Try looking in the Screening Room Forum to see if there are any cool projects you can participate in. If you're new, Vimeo Weekend Projects are a great way to start making videos and have fun with people from all over the world.
As long as you're respectful and explore the creative videos our members are making you can have a swell time on Vimeo. Explore and have fun!
- I don't know how to make videos. Where do I even start? #
-
Anyone can make videos. All you need is a camera and a little inspiration. Take a look at videos on Vimeo to see what other people are creating. Some people shoot videos with their phone or a digital point and shoot camera, while others are professionals with lots of expensive gear. Regardless of your expertise level, there's no shortage of great videos on Vimeo to inspire you and we love any kind of video you create.
If you're a beginner, you can start by enrolling at Vimeo Video School. Don't worry, it's free! Vimeo Video School is a fun place for anyone to learn how to make better videos. We recommend starting at Video 101, a fun, basic guide to making videos.
Once you're ready to jump in, try making a video of what's in your fridge and uploading that. If you're feeling slightly more jazzed, try editing a video using an editing program. Most computers come with some sort of basic editing software, and the more you practice editing video with it, the more rewarding it will be. Or you can use our free iOS, Android, or Windows Phone 7 apps to edit footage and upload videos right from your phone. To practice editing a video, try making a 5 Vignettes - 5, 5 second video clips put together to make a short video. As you become more familiar with editing, try to make videos that are similar to the ones you enjoy on Vimeo. You can also join different Groups and ask other users questions about how they make their videos.
Go for it!
- What are the recommended settings for uploading a video? #
-
Compressing a video reduces the file size. While it can take time to compress a video, it will result in a faster upload, and also a faster download for anyone you choose to share the original file with. We strongly recommend you compress your videos before uploading them to Vimeo. That way you'll be able to upload more videos!
Take a look at our Compression Guidelines for the best advice on compressing your videos.
Please note: Our encoders don't like Apple ProRes codecs. They're intense codecs that don't play nice with our machines. If you opt to use your own settings, please avoid using Apple ProRes.
- How do I upload a Video? #
-
Go to the upload page. Or, you can click the 'Upload a video' button on the home page, or find the 'Upload' link in the top navigation. Those will all bring you to the upload page where you can upload your video. Make sure you have carefully read the rules for what kind of videos you can upload (only ones you make yourself!) and hit the 'Choose a Video to Upload' button, select the file you want to upload from your computer, and hit 'Select' (or 'Choose'). Your video will magically start uploading to Vimeo and you'll see a progress bar telling you how long it will take.
Note: slower connections and large files will take longer, so please be patient.
After your video is finished uploading, it will go through a conversion process. You can monitor that process with a progress bar as well. While the video is converting you may leave that page and Vimeo will send you an email when it's finished. Pretty easy, right?
- If something goes wrong, or doesn’t work, what should I do? #
-
Try again! Sometimes the best way to fix a problem is to try it again. If it still doesn’t work after multiple attempts, try holding down the shift button on your keyboard and pushing the reload button on your browser. This resets the cache in your browser, which will often clear up persistent problems. If this method still doesn’t work, quit your browser, reopen it, and try again. If the problem still persists, take a look in the Help Center for answers.
- Can I use Vimeo for my business or for commercial purposes? #

- How do I get people to watch my videos? #
-
Vimeo is a vibrant community of intelligent and creative people. We encourage you to find people who share your interests and connect with them here.
How do you do that? Interact with people!
The more you interact with the community by liking and commenting on their videos, the more inclined they'll be to return the favor. To start, we recommend joining some Groups that pique your interest and following Channels that tickle your fancy. And why not try participating in some of the great Vimeo projects happening in our Screening Room Forum?
- How do I get my videos featured? #
-
Our staff features videos that they feel show what Vimeo's all about. If you'd like to have your video considered as a Staff Pick, use the shoutbox to post a link to your video and we'll do our best to check it out. Please refrain from sending messages to Staff members to watch your videos, that doesn't actually work too well.

-

- How do I confirm my email? #
-
If you still haven't received your confirmation email, please make sure you're checking the email you used when you signed up for Vimeo. Be sure to check your spam filter. It may take a little while for the email to get to your inbox, so please be patient.
Have you tried this yet?
