RAAKH (Ashes to Ashes) Teaser
Bombay, twenty years ago, a twenty-four year old from Carter road, Bandra got together with a slightly older beardo from Byculla, put together a team and realised their dream...
Most of us, were first timers (you may recognise some of the names in the credits below) and there was an innocence, an energy that brought us all together. Every day of shoot, of post-production was pure unadulterated joy and was somehow untouched by the cynicism that marks our trade.
RAAKH is presently unavailable to rent or buy and has never (officially) been on Tv. Asif & I are working on a twentieth anniversary edition. Till then, here’s a small snippet, enjoy
and welcome to 20 10!
Aditya B.
Here's a New York Times, Reader Review from June 18th, 2008:
Aamir as Aamir at his adamant best-Ashes to Ashes.
This dark movie is set in the bizarre twilight zone of the degenerate and venomous world of the Bombay underworld ,where there is only one vice that rules-might is right,
it's protagonists search for their own existence in alignment with their ideals for justice and an uneven fairplay and use each other as pawns in a game of violence and corruption .
Amir is a rebellious scion of a well to do muslim family who in a rash act of rage provokes the gang rape of his hindu girlfriend by a group of mafia men .
The graphic unsentimentality of the act at night in a desolate public spot is chilling .
The relationship breaks up ,the girl shuns him and her indifference to any mode of justice drives the youth to extremes ,he elopes and lives with social outcasts, where he is helped by a rather shady cop who works outside the parameters of judiciary.
Amir is totally natural and very affective as the angry, violent and impulsive youth ,this is his definitive best act as yet and he needs to go back to his roots as this was his second movie itself, his raw dynamic talent resounds in every scene and the minimalist cinema with expressionist photography enhances his violent deadly role,he is matched by the rather insanely dishonest cop played by Pankaj Kapur and Supraya Pathak as the rape victim who blames him for the incidence in a powerful role, the police are indifferent as there are no witnesses and the victim will not report the crime ,although it is acknowledged .
the brilliant young director has a frustrating setting for a social comment on a grim subject, the perception of acquisition of justice and the means to aquire it , both are unimportant as the net result is more violence and the act leads to anarchy and nihilism, this is a very profoundly affective cinema beautifully shot with minimal dialogues and light , the brooding shadows reflect the title itself which refers to the ashes of the remnants of the living characters in a metaphor as their existence has been reduced to a void which can never be filled .
The finale is bleak and the desperation of the human existence is shown to be damned forever with no hope of redemption , the conclusion is left open to the audience .
This is an anthology of violence , justice and lost youth within the framework of an unjust social hypocrisy where law is invalid and might is right , that might be unreasonable but it could be a universal truth , nevertheless Aditya and Amir create a dark masterpiece which goes beyond it's baroque , brooding beauty with hypnotically lit frames that remind you of the psychological impact and spirituality of the works by Caravaggio and La Tour , an eerie light that explores the human soul and questions it's conscience , the answer is inconclusive but still great cinema .

One night in an unnamed Indian city, young Aamir Hussein is forced to watch in impotent frustration as his girlfriend Neeta is brutally gang-raped in an assault led by the scion of the Karmali mafia family.
Aamir’s inability to do anything about the crime sees him leave home and sink into the city’s underbelly where he encounters the flotsam and jetsam of the decaying metropolis, chief amongst whom is taciturn ex-cop P.K., who, having his own axe to grind against the Karmali clan, helps the boy Amir become a man and exact revenge.
Writer/Director Aditya Bhattacharya’s dystopian vision of modern India made Raakh an instant cult classic when released in 1989 and immediately became a benchmark film for gangster noir from which celebrated directors like Sudhir Mishra, Ram Gopal Varma and Vinod Chopra drew inspiration. The film was one of Bollywood multi-hyphenate Aamir Khan’s first starring roles and won for him a Filmfare award Best Actor nomination and a jury mention at the Indian National Awards. Pankaj Kapur won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor. The film also marked the debut of Sreekar Prasad, who won the National Award for Best Editing and ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan.
In April, IFFLA (Indian Film Festival of LA) viewers will be the first to see Raakh at the ArcLight Hollywood, in a spanking new 35 mm print, mastered from 4K, specially struck to coincide with its 20th anniversary.

Biography of Dilip Kumar
Muhammed Yusuf Khan took on the name Dilip Kumar as his screen name. He was born on 11th December 1922 in Peshawar which is now part of Pakistan. He was born into a Pashtun family and was one of twelve children. One of his brothers Nasir Khan was also an actor and they worked together in Ganga Jamuna (1961) and Bairaag (1976). His father Ghulam Sarwar was a fruit merchant with orchards in Peshawar and Deolali in Maharashtra.
He started a canteen in Pune where he was noticed by the director Amiya Chakravarty. With Chakravarty and actress Devika Rani's help, he entered the film industry after changing his name to Dilip Kumar.
Dilip Kumar was involved with actress Madhubala but they had to part ways as her family was opposed to their marriage. He married actress Saira Banu who was two decades younger than him in 1966. He married a second time in 1980 to Asma but the marriage ended soon after.
Dilip Kumar has been actively involved in charity work. He has been awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (1994) and Nishan-e-Pakistan by the Pakistani Government in 1998. He entered politics in 2000 and was a Member of Parliament.
Jugnu (1947) was his first major success.
He worked in several movies the following year among which were Shahid (1948), which was about India's freedom struggle and starred Kamini Kaushal with whom he was romantically linked off-screen too and Mela (1948) with Nargis. Andaz (1949) was the first and last movie in which he worked with Raj Kapoor.
1950 to 1959 The early fifties saw the release of movies like Arzoo (1950), Deedar (1952), Aan (1952) and Footpath (1953). In 1955, he commanded applause for his performance in Bimal Roy's Devdas with Suchitra Sen and Vyjayanthimala.
Naya Daur (1957) was a commercial and critical success. The movie was also in the news as the director B.R. Chopra took legal action against actress Madhubala as she was signed up as the lead but backed out when her relationship with Dilip Kumar came to an end.
1960 to 1976 Dilip Kumar's next role as Prince Salim in Mughal-e-Azam (1960) was another one of his memorable performances and the movie was one of the high grossers of Bollywood. He produced and acted in Ganga Jamuna with his brother Nasir Khan.
1981 to 1989 Manoj Kumar's Kranti was his comeback movie in 1981. It was a multi starrer with Hema Malini, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha and Parveen Babi. It was one of the biggest movies of the eighties.
1990 to 1999 The year 1991 saw Dilip Kumar in Saudaghar with Rajkumar. The movie was about two feuding families. He was seen again in Qila (1998) which is his last movie to date. He played a negative role. The movie subsequently did not fare well.
Dilip Kumar received the Filmfare Best Actor Award for Daag, Azaad, Devdas, Naya Daur, Kohinoor, Leader, Ram Aur Shyam and Shakti. He was the first actor who won the Filmfare Best Actor Award. He also had a record number of nominations and wins. He won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993.

RAAKH REDUX L.A. TEASER
RAAKH Redux (Ashes to Ashes,) the brand new version of my 1989 first feature (its now 20 minutes shorter and Widescreen,) has been invited by IFFLA (the 8th Indian Film Fest of LA) for its world premiere 20th anniversary screening, at the ArcLight Hollywood on the 24th of April.
The ArcLight is probably one of my favourite cinemas in the world.
Last week whilst 'making' the newer version with Sreekar Prasad, my editor, I asked him how many movies he had edited? (Sreekar started his career with moi, in fact won the prestigious National Award for RAAKH - and then went on to win atleast 6 more!) He asked including shorts and commercials? I said no, just features and he said 'I'm not sure but I think its over 350...'
Yes, Thats ThreeHundred&Fifty; features!!!
Can you believe that. And he's my age.
Ouch!
