Mayor Datuk Roshidi Hashim said Ipoh City Council had estimated that it would cost RM1.5 million to restore the field.

"We are preparing the specifications for the repairs that need to be undertaken, including changing the field's subsoil piping system. The tender for the project will be released soon and work on the field is expected to start by year's end," he said at the  council's monthly full-board meeting recently.

Roshidi said the council was also in the midst of procuring funding from the state government for the repairs.

"In the meantime, we have allocated between RM700,000 and RM800,000 to carry out leveling work at the field.

"We hope the state government will approve an allocation to enable the full restoration of the field," he said.

Roshidi said the subsoil piping system was damaged because of the use of heavy equipment to set up the stage and tents during large gatherings such as concerts.

"The system was seriously damaged during the state-level Chinese New Year celebrations in 2008.

"Now every time it rains, water is not absorbed into the ground, resulting in puddles," he said.

The field, which is more than 100 years old, was the first public recreation ground in the city.

It had been a popular venue for inter-state football and hockey games. The field's unkempt condition became a source of complaint as it was frequently found to be strewn with rubbish, and vandals kept stealing fountain nozzles and light fixtures.

The council also highlighted the fact that closed-circuit televisions had been stolen.
