John Badham on ANATOMY OF A MURDER
Filmmaker John Badham testifies on ANATOMY OF A MURDER Otto Preminger learned a lot from Hitchcock, publicity-wise. The autocratic Viennese director basically stars in this trailer for one of his biggest hits, based on a real murder case and shot on the actual locations in Michigan. Once again Preminger baited the censors with provocative material and got away with it, opening the doors to franker screen treatments. John Badham on THE LADYKILLERS
Alexander Mackendrick's final film for Britain's Ealing Studios is one of its most celebrated comedies as well as a pivotal film for an embryonic Peter Sellers, thrilled to be working with his idol Alec Guinness. Sellers later emulated Guinness by taking on numerous multi-character assignments. The macabrely witty (Oscar-nominated) script is a virtual catalog of post-war English manners and traditions, yet it was penned by an American, William Rose (it's a Mad, etc. World). Sellers and costar Herbert Lom later teamed for the Pink Panther series. Remade in 2004 with the locale switched from London to Biloxi, Mississippi. Richard Dreyfuss stars, in a role Ian McShane played in a 1972 telefilm and which both Tom Conti and Mary Tyler Moore(!) played on Broadway. John Badham on A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
Dashiell Hammet? Akira Kurosawa? Are these among the progenitors of the spaghetti western?! Yep. Hammet's Red Harvest informed Kurosawa's Yojimbo, which was transformed into the first Sergio Leone Dollars blockbuster that took the world by storm (although it was not the first example of the form). Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name was treated by US distributor United Artists as a western James Bond and marketed accordingly. All three Dollars films were released in the US in 1967, although the first was shot in 1964. As was the custom, this original Italian trailer Americanizes the names of the cast and crew: Leone becomes Bob Roberts, Gian Maria Volonte becomes John Wells, etc. As always, the best of the best is at www.trailersfromhell.com ABOUT JOHN BADHAM JOHN BADHAM, the director of Saturday Night Fever, WarGames and Short Circuit and many other films as well as TV series Heroes, Psych, The Shield and Criminal Minds. Henry Fielding's 1749 novel zoomed to the best seller lists after the success of this well-received multi-Oscar winner (best picture, director, screenplay and music score), attractively shot on location utilizing the residents of Cerne Abbas, a small village in Dorchester. Albert Finney and Joyce Redman's elaborately erotic chow-down scene is right up there with Marco Ferreri's La Grande Bouffe. Screen debuts of David Warner and Lynn Redgrave. John Badham on BLUE THUNDER (Trailer Commentary)
John Badham recalls the making of his rip-roaring action picture featuring some of the craziest urban helicopter action yet seen onscreen, as overseen by veteran pilot and aerial coordinator James C. Gavin. Malcolm McDowell, playing the villain, conquered his longstanding fear of flying long enough to go aloft for the loopy attack helicopter sequences. His obvious discomfort goes beyond the level of performance into the realm of Real Trouper-ism. John Badham gets DIABOLIQUE Alfred Hitchcock coveted the film rights to the novel She Who Was No More by Boileau & Narcejac but Henri-Georges Clouzot got there first (by hours, apparently). Soon afterward Hitch snapped up one of the duo's other novels, which became Vertigo. A worldwide suspense sensation, Les Diaboliques was widely influential and has been remade for tv in 1974(Reflections of Murder) and 1993 (House of Secrets) and for theaters in 1996. John Badham on WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY?
Filmmaker John Badham wants to know WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY? Woody Allen's first stab at moviemaking is still one of his funniest. "Key of Keys", a low budget Japanese spy movie, is recut and entirely redubbed into a free-form comedy in which the Macguffin is the world's greatest egg salad recipe. A huge favorite on college campuses in the late sixties, this exists in several versions. Beware one that runs on TCM, which has "politically corrected" all the funniest material. Blue Thunder
Ex-Vietnam chopper pilot Roy Scheider is now in charge of Blue Thunder, a high-tech copter designed to quell possible terrorism during the 1984 LA Olympics. His onetime comrade-in-arms Malcolm McDowell, now his bitter enemy, will stop at nothing to neutralize Blue Thunder and expedite an armed takeover of the United States. Well, there's the plot: now sit back and enjoy those eye-popping aerial scenes. Blue Thunder was later adapted into a weekly TV series.

John Badham on STAGECOACH
John Ford's enduring milestone (his first sound western) was the film that Orson Welles studied over and over before embarking on Citizen Kane. Dudley Nichols' adaptation of Ernest Haycox's Collier's magazine story "Stage to Lordsburg" was the first of many Ford films shot in Monument Valley, then one of the least accessible locations in the southwest. By 1970 the original negative had been lost but John Wayne, who played the star-making role of Ringo, donated his personal 35mm print which has become the basis of all subsequent releases. John Badham on LET'S KILL UNCLE
Filmmaker John Badham says LET'S KILL UNCLE The great Nigel Green brings a delicious patina of sardonic menace to one of his few lead roles as the cheerful would-be assassin of his newly rich nephew. One of William Castle's later efforts, it's gimmick-less and shot pretty much like a tv show, but its uneasy mix of fun and child murder has a pleasingly unwholesome tone.
