Splitting Maul
Splitting Maul
www.survivalistboards.com A lot of people get a splitting maul and an axe confused. A splitting maul does a much better job at splitting wood then an axe. If the maul gets stuck, it can be drove through the wood, where an axe has to be pulled loose.

Testing the Ludwig Log Splitting Axe / Maul
Testing the Ludwig Log Splitting Axe / Maul
This video is for anybody interested in buying a splitting axe. The one I have here is a Ludwig spiltting axe. It has a 4 lb. head. The standard splitting axe uses either a 6 lb. or an 8 lb. head. The lighter weight requires the user to exert more energy to accomplish the same thing with the heavier axe. Also, with the light weight, the wide angle of the head works against the user as resistance instead of helping the user. When a successful split is accomplished, the wide angle throws the chunks of wood far off to the side. So you don't want to use this axe near a car or a trailer with tail lights. I bought the Ludwig from Home Depot. Lowe's version of the same axe is called a Super Splitter. I paid $30 for this one. I would recommend buying the 8 lb. standard splitting axe with the molded handle and let the weight do the work for you.
