A day in the life of a Swiss polar researcher
Some years ago Swiss researcher Sébastien Barrault decided to leave his home country and move to the Norwegian Islands of Svalbard in the Arctic Ocean. In the freezing temperatures and with an ever-present threat from polar bears he carries out studies on the ice.¶ (swissinfo)

Polar Archive - 11 - Climate Patterns
What was the climate like at Lake El'gygytgyn in the past? The opened sediment cores give a rough idea of the cold and warm periods, but only the results of the many different analyses will allow them to be deciphered. Using state of the art technology, the researchers hope to be able to reconstruct the past in detail over the next two years, and ideally even be able to look at individual years. In Cologne, the core logger measures the so-called magnetic susceptibility the magnetisability of the material and the colour spectrum of the cores. Every sediment has its own "fingerprint", an individual combination of density, electrical resistance, sound wave velocity, natural gamma radiation and magnetic properties. What conclusions can be drawn?

Kenneth Golden: Climate Change and the Melting Polar Ice Caps
Climate Change and the Melting Polar Ice Caps Kenneth Golden: Professor of Mathematics and Adjunct Professor of Bioengineering University of Utah This lecture is part of SFU's 2011 global warming seminar series "Global Warming: A Science Perspective". Regardless of one's perspective the effects of global warming are a quantifiable set of environmental results. That is why the SFU Dean of Science Office invited some of the world's leading scientists to present results of their research in this six-part series of talks. The series is designed to speak to a general audience of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty from across the Faculty of Science and the University and interested members of the public. Polar Ice Update
Sometimes trying to squash the ignorant canards of climate deniers seems hopeless. For every one you swat, 10 more crop up. For instance, I still get emails from people convinced that ice in the arctic is recovering and growing. For this video I'm going to let the scientists speak for themselves.

Dramatic Changes in Polar Ice: Are We Waking Sleeping Giants
Google Tech Talk August 10, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Waleed Abdalati. From disappearing Arctic sea ice to the rapid acceleration of Greenland and Antarcticas outlet glaciers, the Earths ice cover is changing in remarkable ways. Because ice plays a critical role in shaping our planets environment, understanding changes like these is crucial. Scientists ability to investigate the dramatic behavior of the Earths vast and remote frozen regions has been greatly enhanced in recent years by the development of sophisticated satellite observation capabilities. The space-based view provides both perspective and context that enable new insights into how and why ice is changing and what these changes may mean for life on Earth. Dr. Abdalati is Director of the Earth Science and Observation Center and Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Colorado. His research focuses on the development and application of remote sensing techniques to understand changes in high-latitude glaciers and ice sheets. From 1996 to 2008 he held various positions at NASA in which he conducted and oversaw NASA-funded research efforts and on glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, and polar climate.. He has also been heavily involved in the scientific development of NASAs Ice Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) and its planned successor, ICESat-2, which have as their primary objective understanding changes in the Earths polar ice cover. Dr. Abdalati received his Masters and Ph.D. from the ...

Understanding Climate Change in the Arctic
Many climate models suggest the Arctic ice cover will melt within 50 years. Researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution want to measure the changes in the water—particularly the layered structure of the ocean—in order to understand what mechanisms might lead the ice cap to melt from below. The impacts for the ecosystem, the regional and global climate, and for commerce would be enormous. Many climate models suggest the Arctic ice cover will melt within 50 years. Researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution want to measure the changes in the water—particularly the layered structure of the ocean—in order to understand what mechanisms might lead the ice cap to melt from below. But how is it possible to take continuous measurements over long periods of time in such a hostile environment? Scientists and engineers have found a way.

Global Warming and the Polar Regions: Signs of Human Impact - Perspectives on Ocean Science
Climate researchers have long understood that human induced changes to Earth's atmosphere should impact climate in the polar regions earlier and more dramatically than in most other places. Explore the unique meteorology, oceanography, and ecology of both the Arctic and Antarctic with Dr. Dan Lubin as he describes observations that indicate unmistakable signs of anthropogenic climate change in both the Arctic and Antarctic. Series: "Perspectives on Ocean Science" [10/2007] [Science] [Show ID: 13039]
