Woody Allen - Manhattan (1979) Cast: Woody Allen, Mariel Hemingway, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Michael Murphy... On the heels of Annie Hall, the Oscar-winning romantic comedy that rocketed Woody Allen to the front ranks of American filmmakers, Manhattan continued Allen's romantic obsessions in a slightly darker, more pessimistic vein. Allen stars as Isaac Davis, a TV comedy writer sick of the pap he is forced to churn out and harboring dreams of being the great American novelist. His love life is in barbed-wire territory: he is tormented by his second ex-wife Jill (Meryl Streep), a lesbian who has written a tell-all book about their marriage, and he is dating teenager Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), to whom he refuses to commit... Dr Terror's House of Horrors (1965) Review & Analysis: Amicus Review Series
www.areashiftybun.com - Join us on the forums! First in my series of Amicus anthology horror reviews. We start at the beginning with Freddie Francis' 'Dr Terror's House of Horrors'. A 1965 anthology horror film which I rate as one of the best. IMDB www.imdb.com Synopsis From Allrovi: Not to be confused with David Hewitt's abominable Dr. Terror's Gallery of Horrors (AKA The Blood Suckers), this clever horror omnibus is one of the better early anthologies from Amicus Productions, thanks to Freddie Francis' stylish direction and a tongue-in-cheek approach from writer Milton Subotsky (who would later apply the same sardonic treatment to the EC Comics-based productions Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror). The framing story is set in a train car, where five passengers have their fortunes told by the all-seeing Dr. Schreck (Peter Cushing), who refers to his ominous tarot deck as his "House of Horrors." Their respective stories involve all manner of occult happenings: a jazz musician's involvement with a voodoo curse; an estate haunted by a werewolf; a doctor (Donald Sutherland) who suspects that his wife has become a vampire; a cottage besieged by a monster kudzu vine; and the most entertaining segment, in which arrogant art critic Christopher Lee is avidly pursued by a snubbed artist's severed hand. In the end, it doesn't take a jaded horror buff to deduce Schreck's true identity or the ultimate destination of the train passengers, but it's a fun ride nonetheless. Not ...

A Chinese Ghost Story (1987) (Joey Wang, Leslie Cheung) HQ trailer (Cantonese audio, English subs)
Trailer from the EMS German DVD. (I upscaled to 720p because the proper display size for PAL is 1024x576, and 480p is limited to 856x480, which is for NTSC.) (Subs are not on DVD; I added them manually by copying them from the scene in the movie.) www.imdb.com www.hkcinemagic.com www.hkmdb.com Synopsis: Ning Caichen (Leslie Cheung) is a lowly tax collector who takes refuge for the night at the spooky Lam Ro temple. There he encounters and promptly falls in love with a beautiful ghost named Nie Xiaoqian (Joey Wang). Unfortunately Xiaoqian is damned to serve the evil hermaphroditic tree spirit Lao Lao, who (thanks to an extraordinarily long tongue) feasts on the souls of amorous young males. Usually Xiaoqian, along with her comely sister Qing, tempts would-be Lotharios to their arboreal doom, but she too is smitten with the downtrodden wanderer. Soon afterwards, Caichen meets Master Yan (Ma Wu), a Taoist hermit, martial arts master, and a sworn enemy of Lao Lao, who tells him of Xiaoqian's true, otherworldly nature. Nonetheless, true love proves to be strong. Caichen promises Xiaoqian that he will help spring her from her dubious employment and Xiaoqian protects her love from the evil wood sprite. Later, things grow more complicated for the lovers when they learn that Xiaoqian has been betrothed to a demon warlord. ~AllRovi.com

I'm pretty sure many of you saw this on TCM Underground over a week ago. If I still had my DVD recorder working, I would have dubbed it there on disc and uploaded here. However, I found this on a streaming site and downloaded it, then burned it to disc. So here it is. I'm pretty sure most people who watch will enjoy it, and I think many of you will. Enjoy! By the way, if you're wondering why I put a slash between the years, it's because the movie's release date tends to be listed as either 1978 or 1980. Imdb and AllRovi list it as 1980, but others list it as 1978. Go figure.

DARK LOTUS - THE OPAQUE BROTHERHOOD // PROMO TEASER TRAILER (HD)
DARK LOTUS - THE OPAQUE BROTHERHOOD // PROMO TEASER TRAILER (HD) The Opaque Brotherhood is the third studio album by American hip hop supergroup Dark Lotus. Released on April 15, 2008, it peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart, #45 on the Billboard 200, #45 on the Top Internet Albums chart and #23 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Allrovi reviewer Stewart Mason praised the album, writing "Nothing on The Opaque Brotherhood will convince anyone who isn't already a fan, but the tormented lyrics and matter-of-fact delivery remove a layer or two of distance and artifice from the band's familiar themes, and make them that much more disturbing as a result." A "Deluxe Edition" of the album was released in August 2008, adding four additional songs.

Sun Ra (* 22. Mai 1914 in Birmingham, Alabama; † 30.
Bemerkenswerte Sun-Ra-Alben der 1950er Jahre sind unter vielen anderen Super-Sonic Jazz, Sun Ra Visits Planet Earth, Interstellar Low Ways, Angels And Demons At Play, We Travel The Spaceways und Jazz in Silhouette.
Bemerkenswerte Titel aus dieser Periode sind unter anderem The Magic City, When Sun Comes Out und Other Planes Of There.

MSU Library Film Series: "My Own Private Idaho"
The MSU Main Library will be screening the 1991 movie "My Own Private Idaho" this Thursday, April 12. Join us in the Main Library North Conference Room (W449) starting at 7:00 PM for this free and public event, co-sponsored by the Early Modern Studies Group. The film will be presented by Sandra Logan, Department of English, and Andrew Kranzman, PhD candidate in English. "Gus Van Sant's dreamtime riff on Shakespeare's Henry IV, Parts I and II features River Phoenix as Mike Waters, a narcoleptic male hustler who is first seen drifting on a stretch of highway in Idaho. Mike shifts from Seattle to Portland, where he has taken up with Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves), who is also a hustler...Van Sant's third feature further established him as a spokesman not just for alienated gay men but also for disaffected youth in general. A harsh, beautiful, and fervently original portrait of alienation, betrayal, and unrequited love, My Own Private Idaho was one of the defining films of both Van Sant's career and the New Queer Cinema of the 1990s."
