Microsoft 2011 BUILD Developer Conference Steven Sinofsky Presentation Part 1
Go to www.technomicon.com for our full article on the BUILD conference. In this first part of Sinofsky's keynote at the BUILD conference, he presents an overview of Windows 8. Windows 8 features the new touch-enabled Metro interface, a dramatic departure from the traditional desktop user interface. Metro makes extensive use of dynamically updating tiles similar to Windows Phone 7, and is optimized for touch screens, although it can be used with a keyboard and mouse. MS is betting that touch screens will be universal for both desktop and mobile devices, in contrast with Apple. Windows 8 is something of a one-size-fits-all approach, in which all hardware platforms, desktop, laptop, and tablet, are required to support the full Win 8 OS, with built in support for the conventional Windows desktop. It remains to be seen whether this is really viable for ultra low power ARM devices, which don't have the computing power of even Intel Atoms. ARM development for Win 8 appears to be lagging, and most of the demos were run on Intel based systems.

Surface - The New Microsoft Tablet Freezes At Unveiling - Epic Fail - Windows 8
MICROSOFT boss Steve Sinofsky puts on a brave face as his company's rival to the iPad FREEZES at the opening presentation. The computer named Surface completely froze midway through the high-profile unveiling in Los Angeles. Just after the Microsoft president explained how users could "browse smoothly" on the tablet, the system, which was being projected on a large screen, stopped working. Sinofsky bravely tried to continue with his speech but eventually had to admit defeat and run backstage to grab a working model. Windows chief Steven Sinofsky leaves Microsoft
The head of Windows Steven Sinofsky has quit Microsoft just weeks after the launch of new operating system Windows 8. CEO Steve Ballmer thanked Sinosfky for his years the the company, but did not reveal the reasons for his abrupt departure. The news comes as a surprise as Sinsofky had been seen in some parts as a natural successor to Ballmer. Sinofsky became president of Microsoft's Windows division in July 2009, and turned the fortunes of the operating system around after the poorly received Windows Vista. Last month Sinofksy spearheaded the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft's latest OS that was designed towards improving user experience on increasingly popular mobile devices such as tablets. There is speculation that Sinofsky's departure could be due to dissatisfaction with early Windows 8 sales and customer feedback, or due to personality clashes amongst the windows team. But in a statement released, Sinofsky only had good things to day about the company. He said, "It is impossible to count the blessings I have received over my years at Microsoft. I am humbled by the professionalism and generosity of everyone I have had the good fortune to work with at this awesome company." Julie Larson-Green will take over all Windows software and hardware engineering, whilst the companies' chief financial and marketing officer Tami Reller, will now add the business side of Windows to her responsibilities. Microsoft 2011 BUILD Developer Conference Steven Sinofsky Presentation Part 3
Go to www.technomicon.com for our full article on the BUILD conference. Steven is joined by Antoine Leblond for a demonstration of application building using the new Visual Studio tools for Windows 8. Along with a new API architecture, Visual Studio allows developers to create apps using HTML 5 and javascript. Visual Studio also provides automatic compatibility with all platforms supported by Windows 8, Intel or ARM. This doesn't include Windows 7 Phone, however, but code is very portable since Win7P also supports app creation using HTML 5 and JavaScript.
