Clean energy workshop winds up in Nairobi
www.businessdailyafrica.com This week the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves led by Radha Muthiah, Executive Director convened a four-day regional workshop in Nairobi to deliberate on how to scale up clean cooking solutions across East Africa. The Alliance through the partnership of development partner like United Nations industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Global Village Energy Partnership (GVEP international) and The Paradigm Project seek to improve livelihoods, empower women, and combat climate change by creating a global market for clean and efficient household cooking solutions. The Alliance is targeting 100 million households to adopt clean and efficient cookstoves and fuels by 2020 from 2.5 million currently. To achieve this the Alliance is working with its public, private and non-profit partners to help overcome the market barriers that currently impede the production, deployment, and use of clean cookstoves in developing countries.

53rd Journalism Awards Gala (part 1)
A. JOURNALISTS OF THE YEAR
A1. PRINT (Over 50,000 circulations)
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly
Comments: "Range" is an appropriate middle name. What incredibly
detailed reporting on a variety of complicated topics. What an ability to
make us feel as if we know the players. What skill in explaining messy
situations. The very essence of solid journalism.
2nd place: David Evans, Bloomberg Markets, "Duping the Families of
Fallen Soldiers"
HM: Mariel Garza, Los Angeles Daily News Editorials
A2. PRINT (Under 50,000 circulation)
Radley Balko, Reason Magazine
Comment: ―Radley Balko is one of those throw-back journalists that
understands the power of groundbreaking reporting and how to make a
significant impact through his work. Time and time again, his stories cause
readers to stop, think, and most significantly, take action.
Congratulations!‖
2nd Place: Dan Evans, Glendale News-Press
HM: Ryan Vaillancourt, Los Angeles Downtown News
A3. TELEVISION JOURNALIST
Ana Garcia and Fred Mamoun, KNBC-TV
Garcia and Mamoun shoot, write and edit compelling stories. One of
their strengths as a team is the obvious respect for their subjects, and the
ability through contacts in the community to land exclusive interviews and
opportunities. They are strong storytellers and the pieces move!
2nd Place: Antonio Valverde, Univision
Valverde has a wide range as a journalist. He is able to work with various
segments of the community to tell compelling stories. He has political
acumen and can accurately and fairly tell stories, while also reaching out
to the disenfranchised to share their stories of life in L.A.
A4. RADIO JOURNALIST
Susan Valot, KPCC
Comments: Well-rounded reports with authoritative, informed tone. Great
use of sound. Valot‘s work is some of the best we‘ve heard.
2nd Place: Brian Watt: KPCC
HM: Kitty Felde: KPCC
A5. ONLINE JOURNALIST
Daniel Heimpel, FosteringMediaConnections.org
2nd Place: Chris Hedges, Truthdig.com
HM: Robert Scheer, Truthdig.com
A6. SPORTS JOURNALIST
N/A
A7. ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALIST
Kim Masters, KCRW-FM Radio
Comments: Nice voice in both senses of the word, along with substantive
content. Covering a story about outed CIA agent Valerie Plame, she
tracked down Plame to comment on her portrayal, rather than just talking
to the actress. She also gave a lot of information on entertainment agents
that broadened the picture the public was likely to have of that
occupation.
2nd Place: Tara Wallis-Finestone, NBC LA
HM: George Pennacchio, KABC-TV
A8. PHOTO JOURNALIST
Rick Loomis, Los Angeles Times
A9. DESIGNER
N/A
B. DAILY/WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS
Over 50,000 circulations – including news bureaus and correspondents
B1. HARD NEWS
Tracy Manzer and Sarah Peters, Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Heroes foil
bank heist"
Comments: The writing was appropriately-paced for the category and
the story content. I enjoyed the writers' use of sensory details and factual
information, presented with a slightly humorous/sarcastic tone that made
this piece fun to read.
B2. NEWS FEATURE
Patrick Range McDonald, LA Weekly, ―The Parent Trigger‖.
Comments: Documents a groundswell of democracy while explaining a
new law through a real-world prism. Powerful. Incredibly well-sourced and
informative, yet provides a human touch. The story of poor minorities trying
to make a change documented how the masses can move the
establishment. Inspiring to others, this story shows what newspaper do like
no other. Bravo.
2nd Place: Thomas Curven, Los Angeles Times, ―Walking Away from Grief‖
HM: Kristopher Hanson, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Dangers Close to
Home‖
B3. PERSONALITY PROFILE
Steve Friess, LA Weekly, ―A Tragic Love Story‖
2nd Place: Charlotte Hsu, LA Weekly, ―Forever Scared — The Story of
Herman Atkins‖
HM: Karen Robes Meeks, Long Beach Press-Telegram, ―Murchison: A
Portrait of a Long Beach Lobbyist‖
B4. INVESTIGATIVE/SERIES
David Evans, Bloomberg News, "Fallen Soldiers' Families Denied Cash
Payout as Insurers Profit"
Comments: These articles are the soul of great investigative journalism,
uncovering a shocking system whereby the families of slain soldiers are
tricked about benefits, and where shameless insurance companies reap
big profits at the expense of those families.
Best of all, it led to immediate Congressional investigations and action.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "The Dance of the Lemons"
HM: Monica Alonzo and Simone Wilson, LA Weekly, "Culture of Cruelty"
B5. BUSINESS
Alana Semuels, Los Angeles Times, "California unfriendly to business?
Figures say no"
Comments: This is an authoritative and well-documented piece that
refutes the common wisdom of California's tax structure being unfriendly
to business.
2nd place: Beth Barrett, LA Weekly, "Barry Minkow 2.0"
HM: Donna Howell, Investor's Business Daily,

¨FOX International Channels (FIC) Reveals Record Breaking Audience Results for the Global Launch of “The Walking Dead”
LOS ANGELES (November 7, 2010) – After debuting across 120 countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East, FOX International Channels (FIC) today revealed the record breaking audience results for the global launch of the television series The Walking Dead.
The global premiere of The Walking Dead, scheduled in all FIC markets during the first week of November and in most markets in the 10pm timeslot, delivered ratings as strong as those achieved by the US premiere last Sunday on AMC. In most countries where ratings were available at press time, The Walking Dead was the highest rated program on pay television of the night.
The Walking Dead’s impressive achievements in FIC’s major territories include: outperforming every US cable series premiere in the year or more, building at least 100% in audience over the average by time period and winning its time period among all Pay TV in all markets.
Global Ratings Highlights:
In the UK, TWD delivered 315,000 Adults and was the highest rated show in its time slot on Pay TV, based on live ratings for FX and its multiplex, and becoming the highest rated premiere for a new show on FX in five years. Based on the performance of previous shows, FIC expects the total audience to double once delayed viewing figures are added in.
In Italy, TWD delivered 360,000 viewers with a 17.2% Share of the total viewing on Sky channels, becoming the highest rated show of the night on any Pay TV channel and the second-highest rated performance of any series ever on FOX.
In Spain, TWD delivered 105,000 viewers, with a 10.2% share of viewing on Pay TV channels, becoming the highest rated show in its time slot and the highest rated series premiere on FOX for 2010.
In South East Asia, TWD delivered 380,000 viewers, beating all other Western Channels and obtaining significantly high ratings
In Singapore (425% higher than the time slot average) and the Philippines (1,700% higher than the time slot average).
In Mexico, TWD did a 1.8 rating among P18-49, exceeding the time slot average by 230% and winning its time period among all Pay TV.
In Argentina, TWDdid a 3.5 rating among P18-49, exceeding the time slot average by 341% and winning its time period among all Pay TV.
In Colombia, TWD did a 2.1 among P18-49, exceeding the time slot average by 176% and winning its time period among all Pay TV.
In Peru, TWD did a 2.1 among P18-49, exceeding the time slot average by 970% and winning its time period among all Pay TV.
In Venezuela, TWD did a 1.2 among P18-44, exceeding the time slot average by 123% and winning its time period among all Pay TV.
In Korea, TWD delivered 57,000 viewers and was the highest rated premiere on FOX this year.
“In just a few months, FIC and AMC have demonstrated the effects of a truly global collaboration resulting in the biggest global launch in TV’s history,” said David Haslingden, CEO and President, FOX International Channels (FIC). “The strong performance results and numbers we are seeing this week, demonstrate the strong appeal of this high quality drama, as well as, the tremendous marketing efforts of our teams worldwide.”
Countless International critics declared The Walking Dead a must watch Television indulgence, “It’s plausibly scripted and impressively shot” (Daily Telegraph), “If you have never been a fan of undead dramas, this may be the one to change your mind. Recommended!” (The Observer), “The Walking Dead is a feast. Dig in – but don’t worry about a knife and a fork” (The Guardian).
The Walking Dead, AMC’s original series, is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. Kirkman serves as an executive producer on the project and three-time Academy Award-nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) serves as writer, director and executive producer. Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon, The Incredible Hulk), chairman of Valhalla Motion Pictures, serves as Executive Producer. David Alpert from Circle of Confusion serves as Executive Producer. Charles “Chic” Eglee (Dexter, The Shield, Dark Angel) serves as Executive Producer.

Watchman for the Weak and Hurting
BECOMING A GOOD SAMARITAN: WATCHMAN FOR THE HURTING
COMING ALONGSIDE THOSE WHO SUFFER.
This morning we are going to tackle a big subject. The Good Samaritan gave us an example of caring for the Weak and the Powerless, even when they are strangers. This morning I want us to look at our responsibilities when it comes to those in the world who are hurting because of disease and sickness.
Jesus twice sent out his disciples with very clear and concise instructions. Those same instructions apply to us as His servants:
Matthew 10:8 - Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.
Luke 10:8-9 -"When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you. Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you.'
HEAL: THERAPEÚŌ - attendant, servant. To voluntarily wait upon, minister to, render service, heal. Pictures the physician's watchful attendance of the sick and man's service to God. Therapeuo means to serve as therápōn.
Therápōn-denotes a faithful friend to a superior, who solicitously regards the superior's interest or looks after his affairs, not a common or domestic servant.
Therápōn approaches more closely the position of oikonómos, manager, in God's house.
One who heals the sick is a friend who closely watches over one he considers his superior. One who heals the sick is actually functioning as a manager in God's house!
The reason this is so important is the actual meaning of the sick that Christ sent them out to minister to.
SICK: ASTHENÉS: "Without strength, powerless, weak, without physical ability. By implication, meaning afflicted, distressed by oppression, calamity. In a moral sense, wretched, diseased, i.e., in a state of sin and wretchedness .
Our attitude toward sickness and disease reveals the state of our heart-whether we are fit to be managers in God's House!
THE ROLE OF THE “WATCHMAN”
Ezekiel explains the Code of the Watchman. God sets some people up as Watchmen over His people. They are to warn the people of impending danger.
1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman, 3 and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand. “So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. Ezekiel 33:1-7
Now at this time both the Northern and Southern Kingdoms of Israel and Judah had already been taken into captivity. Both nations had gone on a massive sinning spree - worshiping false gods and graven images and turning their back on their one true God time and time again.
Isaiah had prophesied over 100 years earlier, to the Nation of Judah who had witnessed their brothers to the North taken by the Assyrians. They thought they wouldn't be captured because THEY were so religious, beloved by Jehovah. They were proud of their "RELIGIOUSNESS" and wondered why they were having trouble with the Assyrians too! They were trying everything to win God's favor and support. They were even fasting. But here is what Isaiah said:
ISAIAH 58:3-12
3 “Why have we fasted, but You have not seen? We have denied ourselves, but You haven’t noticed!” “Look, you do as you please on the day of your fast, and oppress all your workers. 4 You fast ⌊with⌋ contention and strife to strike viciously with ⌊your⌋ fist. You cannot fast as ⌊you do⌋ today, ⌊hoping⌋ to make your voice heard on high. 5 Will the fast I choose be like this: A day for a person to deny himself, to bow his head like a reed, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast and a day acceptable to the Lord? 6 Isn’t the fast I choose: To break the chains of wickedness, to untie the ropes of the yoke, to set the oppressed free, and to tear off every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the poor and homeless into your house, to clothe the naked when you see him, and not to ignore your own flesh ⌊and blood⌋? 8 Then your light will appear like the dawn, and your recovery will come quickly. Your righteousness will go before you, and the Lord’s glory will be your rear guard. 9 At that time, when you call, the Lord will

Fighting Human Trafficking and Pornography Addiction with True Love

Good morning, brothers and sisters. How is everyone this morning? I bring you greetings from our True Parents. They’ve just left Las Vegas for Korea. On the 18th we celebrated the dedication of the Won Mo boat, with many guests and dignitaries in Las Vegas, together with our True Parents. It was a time for the guests to realize what a remarkable genius our True Father is, in that, yes, he is a spiritual leader, but by training he is a scientist.
The Won Mo Boat
He designed the Won Mo boat, which utilizes helium tanks so that it’s faster, lighter, and saves a whole lot of fuel. In our True Parents’ desire to reclaim leisure for the sake of the family, Father is encouraging families to own one of these boats, to enjoy their time with their family. Father wants to give each family a chance to come together and experience something quite profound and beautiful. And yet at the same time, in line with his ocean providence and his desire to end world hunger, this is evidence of Father’s way of innovating all the pre-existing things that we have taken for granted, making them technologically better. He is making boats work a whole lot better for us so we can be free to have a great time, go fishing at the same time, and bring something back that the family can enjoy together.
It was an amazing time. Our True Parents were delighted and in good spirits. Every time I see my father and mother, our True Parents, I am so taken aback by their desire to give something of themselves to the world, to present something to the world as a gift to make humanity that much better.
In the name of the boat Won Mo, the Chinese character for Won(圓) means circle, round, and Mo(母) means mother. It is extremely interesting how Father wanted to have the Won Mo dedication ceremony after a special meeting of all the women gathered there for this event. Father asked for a special workshop with all the women present, again stressing the importance of the Pacific Rim Era and the importance of women reclaiming their own dignity as eternal daughters of God, to lead humanity in the right direction toward a world of peace, harmony, and love.
When you take these two Chinese characters together, Won and Mo, what Father envisions for the boat is really the symbol of the universality of our True Parents. When you look at the dynamic, circular relationship between a man and a woman, you realize that it becomes complete when the man finally finds a beautiful wife, somebody who can be a beautiful mother to the children. You realize that circle and the family becomes complete when the feminine is honored, when the feminine is also represented.
Again hearkening the theme of Pacific Rim Era, the women have to finish the circle of humanity. What the world witnessed in terms of the power, might, and strength of the masculine must end in a beautiful circle, with women in different positions of leadership in their families, their society, and their nation. Women are to be the kind of people who can usher in the new millennium by emphasizing the importance of compassion, love, and living for the sake of others, and in doing so help raise men to be great eternal sons of God and great fathers. By working together, women and men are to create a world where they can reclaim their heavenly worth, their equal dignity as eternal sons and daughters, and share the world with everyone who thinks of each other as having similar value and dignity.
When our True Father named this boat Won Mo, I felt that he is signaling a time when the women have to come to the forefront as agents of change, claiming their dignity and raising up all the brothers, fathers, and sons to become better people.
Satisfying Spiritual and Physical Hunger
One of the most important missions our Father has engaged in is developing the ocean providence, finding different ways to manufacture fine fish products, as he has also emphasized the importance of fishing. Unlike farming, in which you have a process of planting seeds, waiting for them to grow, and waiting for the autumn before we can share in the harvest of plenty, my father is thinking about feeding the world every day. He sees the ocean as a treasure of incredible natural resources that we have yet to really understand.
Our True Parents’ desire is for humanity to be healthy and to find its way out of poverty, out of the hungry existence that a lot of men, women, and children are still suffering from. Yes, in this modern day we see the effects of spiritual starvation, but in vast areas of the world many millions of people still suffer from physical starvation. This is what our True Parents want to address through the ocean providence.
As I was experiencing the Won Mo boat dedication ceremony, thinking back about all that our Father has done, I recalled how he single-handedly brought in the sushi revolution here in America. Before True

Poor Whites - South Africa
June 2006 Since the end of apartheid, thousands of white South Africans have been forced into poverty. They blame the government's positive discrimination policies, which favour black employees. Twelve years ago, Afrikaners like Betsie Dreyer lived a privileged and cocooned life. Now, many are dependent on charity handouts. "We are fighting all the time to survive." The government is determined to see the workforce appropriately reflect the population. It gives black people priority in employment, sets 'black quotas' for businesses and favours companies owned by black people. But critics accuse the government of neglecting its responsibility to white citizens. As union rep Kallie Kriel states: "It's ironic that a government that fought racial laws is now doing exactly the same thing." Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
