The Courtenay River Estuary.
One of, if not the most significant, attractions, and natural features in the Comox Valley is the Courtenay River Estuary. The Estuary has been ranked Class 1 status-only eight out of the 442 estuaries on the coast of BC have been given this ranking and is currently in process for designation with National Historic Status. it is truly an ecological and historical jewel. Project Watershed and it's partners are committed to involving and connecting all to this extremely important zone of teaming life and biodiversity. Greenland shark in the St. Lawrence Estuary
www.li9r.com Watch Video Of Greenland Shark in the St. Lawrence Estuary Shark, Somniosus microcephalus, also known as the sleeper sharks, shark Harry, land sharks, gray sharks, or Eskimos Eqalussuaq, is a large sharks native to waters of the North Atlantic Ocean around Greenland and Iceland. These sharks live further north than any other shark species. They are closely related to the shark sleeping Pacific. This is one of the largest species of sharks, size, comparable to the Great White Shark. Great Greenland sharks grow to 6,4 m (21 feet) and 1000 kg (2200 lbs) , and possibly up to 7,3 m (24 feet). Pacific sleeper sharks rivals (possibly up to 7 meters or 23 feet), and the largest species in the family Somniosidae. Greenland sharks are known to be durable. Greenland sharks are deep-water sharks, living at depths to 2000 meters (6600 feet), but the information shows that they inhabit shallow waters, as they were withdrawn in the depths as small as 8 meters (24 feet) at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River in North America. Their stomachs contained the remains of fish and mammals such as seals, deer, horses and bears. The entire reindeer, minus its antlers, was found in the stomach contents of a shark Greenland. This view has been well documented as to the same, explaining many of the above records the contents of the stomach. This shark is often the host of parasitic copepods, Ommatokoita elongata, which is attached to the cornea and corneal feeds shark as a result of ...

IBM, The Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries and Clarkson University are working together to instrument the Hudson River. The data that's being collected can be analyzed in real time using IBM analytics technology. The river is serving as a model for all the rivers of the world so we can all learn how to use water more efficiently. In this video, John Cronin, the director and CEO of the Beacon Institute talks about the project. FLOOD TIDE (TEASER)
It was the summer the gas stations closed. The summer they played music in the old mill. The summer they built a boat. The summer they left.
Flood Tide is a road movie on a river. It tells the story of four musicians who create extraordinary boats out of ordinary junk and set out for open water, fueled by dreams, desperation and a sense of adventure.
The tale of these unlikely rafts and their crews is told by one friend who remains at home. One day a package for him arrives containing artifacts from the boats: a glass bottle, a piece of lace, a diary, an envelope of snapshots. Each object reveals the destinies of two divergent but inextricably linked journeys.
The film's quiet narrative unfolds through fragments of memories, songs, letters and diary entries. Characters played by non-actors from the bands Dark Dark Dark and Fall Harbor chase jobs, dig through the past, and eventually, float out of town in an attempt to escape a life that doesn't make sense. They drift past empty new condo developments, anchor to explore crumbling castles and swim in iridescent green quarries. They get stopped by torrents of rain and groaning, broken down motors.
Flood Tide follows an unpredictable voyage down a strange and meandering river, a search for a new life along a polluted estuary that flows both ways.
Flood Tide is a collaboration with the Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea, a project started by the artist Swoon and built by an eclectic group of artists and performers. In the summer of 2008, the crew built and floated seven large, boat-sculptures down the Hudson River, putting on performances in towns along the way. While documenting the real life journey, Flood Tide is a work of fiction that uses the voyage as its centerpiece. A small crew shot verite footage of the boats underway and created fictional scenes as well.
Music is an integral part of Flood Tide, both onscreen and off. In addition to original songs by Dark Dark Dark and Fall Harbor, the film includes music by Jolie Holland and Nathan Salsburg, and an onscreen performance by sound artist Pauline Oliveros. Along with more conventional screenings, a version of Flood Tide will tour museums, theaters, galleries, performance spaces and community centers in the United States and Europe with a live musical score performed by Dark Dark Dark.

Outdoors: Trip to Arcola Creek Estuary
This natural area was once a thriving port. It was the port of importation for limestone from Kelly's Island for our local iron industry. It was the main port for the export of iron and a wide variety of agricultural products grown in the area. This Ohio port was so important that it was the site of the first lighthouse west of Buffalo, NY This site was also the location of a major shipyard. Some of the first ships constructed on Lake Erie were build at this site. The village that developed at this site was called Ellensburg. It included a number of residences, stores and even a hotel. A few of the old foundations can still be located in the wooded area surrounding the marsh. An estuary is a coastal wetland that is characterized by fluctuating water levels. The dynamic nature of the lakeshore will from time to time close the outlet of the stream causing a wide variation of water levels within the marsh. The periodic submergence of the low lying land creates a unique environment. Few estuaries still exist on the shores of Lake Erie. Most have been drained, filled or developed into marinas. It is important to preserve the few remaining. The town of Ellensburg was built at the junction of Arcola Creek and Lake Erie. It was a thriving community of ship builders, fishermen, and commerce. The Arcole Iron Works was located south of the mouth of the creek (then called Cunningham Creek after Captain John Cunningham who purchased property there in the early 1800's). Arcole Iron ...

"There are limited examples of what can be considered well managed shrimp trawl fisheries, the most widely cited example of best practice comes from Australia, where shrimp trawl fisheries are managed well, and where there are many best practice lessons can be drawn" WORLD WILDLIFE FUND -- "A BLUEPRINT FOR SUSTAINABLE TROPICAL SHRIMP TRAWL FISHERIES" "Environmentally conscious consumers will be pleased to know the seven major wild harvest commercial fisheries operating in NSW have undergone world class environmental assessments, ensuring they are managed sustainably now and into the future," NSW Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan press release 5/7/2010 Even trawling, the most demonized form of fishing, has been shown to have no detectable impact on bottom biota in estuaries (Underwood 2007), an unexpected result that was consistent across three regions for both sampling years. UFO Amazing NEW HQ Clip ..London Thames Estuary video Clip 3
Shot in a higher quality .This is Clip 3 of the object I filmed .It shows a bit more detail . This is not an oil rig or cruise ship. Your guess is as good as mine as you can see from the video it was miles off. it was so brightly lit, which is why it caught my eye in the first place when I was driving along. Anyway enjoy, I have one more clip that I will put up at some point but doesn't really show anything new but maybe useful. Thanks for your interest
