Amtrak Pennsylvanian 42 Arrives and Departs Greensburg PA and meets with NS 20G P42DC 170
It was cool to walk up to the platform and see two stopped and idling SD40E's in the station. Due to Hurricane Irene, the Pennsylvanian will not be operating tomorrow. (unless it terminates in Harrisburg) 8 People boarded the train in Greensburg, and it highballed through Latrobe without stopping. I managed to get a nice horn show at the station. 170 has a nice K5LA. BEST CREW EVER! 170 P42DC Genesis Dash 9-42BP 6321 SD40E 6328 SD40E O4T and 20G meet (C) 2011 p42Amtrak83 All rights reserved

Pennsylvanian capital on the brink of bankruptcy
The governor of Pennsylvania in the US is close to declaring a financial emergency and has signed a bill giving himself unprecedented power to take financial control of the city of Harrisburg. The capital is trying to rescue itself from financial turmoil - a $300 million debt - that could bankrupt the city. But some councillors feel disagree with the city and state's rescue plan and have made worldwide headlines by filing for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection. Al Jazeera's John Terret reports from Harrisburg.

Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians - Sleep (1932)
Fredrick Malcolm Waring (June 9,1900 - July 29,1984) was a popular musician, bandleader and radio-television personality. Sometimes he was referred to as "America's Singing Master" and "The Man Who Taught America How to Sing." He was also a promoter, financial backer and namesake of the Waring Blendor, the first modern electric blender on the market. During his teenage years, Fred Waring, his brother Tom, and their friend Poley McClintock founded the Waring-McClintock Snap Orchestra, which evolved into Fred Waring's Banjo Orchestra. The band often played at fraternity parties, proms, and dances, and achieved local success. He attended Penn State University, where he studied architectural engineering. He also aspired to be in the Penn State Glee Club, but he was rejected with every audition due to "college politics" and tension between him and the glee club's director, Dr. Clarence Robinson. His Banjo Orchestra eventually became so successful that he decided to abandon his education in order to tour with the band, which eventually became known as Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians. From 1923 until late 1932, "Waring's Pennsylvanians" were among Victor Records best-selling bands. In late 1932, he abruptly quit recording, although his band continued to perform on radio. In 1933, "You Gotta Be A Football Hero" was performed on radio to great acclaim. Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians - Sleep (1932)

Amtrak "Pennsylvanian" Train Arriving Greensburg PA From Penn Station
The famous Pennsylvanian leaves Penn Station in New York City and stops at cities in Pennsylvania including Harrisburg, Lewistown, Tyrone, Altoona, (passing the famous horseshoe curve) Johnstown Latrobe Greensburg and Pittsburgh. It is a wonderful mountainous and historical journey, much more interesting and fun than bus or car. Fall folliage trips are a must. Only $18 one way from Altoona to Greensburg! Greensburgs train station was built in 1910 and fell into disrepair in the 1970's and was beautifully restored in the 1990's and includes a mirco brew restaurant. It is now the focal point of the town. Visit www.stuffthatsgone.com for things that ARENT THERE ANYMORE!

One Freight, With a Pennsylvanian Chaser
My return trip to The Curve on August 8, 1996 had several changes from the trip made 2 years before - the borrowed VHS camera was replaced with my own 8mm Handycam, and Dad was succeeded by my girlfriend as traveling companion. On the railroad, the new doublestack-friendly twin-tracked bore at the summit in Gallitzin was in service, and the 'Broadway Limited' was replaced by the 'Three Rivers'. The freights changed little though, with a 6-unit general merchandise again delivering the opening action. Oddly enough, just like the trip in '94 it was passed by an eastbound Amtrak, with a 'Pennsylvanian' filling in for the departed 'Broadway' and showing a great sense of timing by appearing from behind the trees just as the westbound pushers disappeared.
