CCTV video of North Korean bombs hitting South's Yeonpyeong island
South Korea has admitted it fired artillery shells that triggered an early morning clash with North Korea. However it says it was part of a military drill and denied it was directed at the North. Earlier Seoul blamed the North for what it called an unprovoked shelling of its island. Pyongyang claimed the South had violated its maritime border during the military drills. Seoul has since threatened its neighbour with what it called 'enormous retaliation'. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

North Korea had attacked South Korea's Yeonpyeong island. [The actual video]
The bombardment of Yeonpyeong was an artillery engagement between the North Korean military and South Korean forces stationed on Yeonpyeong Island on November 23, 2010. Following a South Korean artillery exercise at waters in the south, North Korean forces fired around 170 artillery shells and rockets at Yeonpyeong Island hitting both military and civilian targets. The shelling caused widespread damage on the island, killing four South Koreans and injuring 19. South Korea retaliated by shelling North Korean gun positions. The North Koreans subsequently stated that they had responded to South Korean shells being fired into North Korean territorial waters. The incident caused an escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula and prompted widespread international condemnation of the North's actions. The United Nations declared it to be one of the most serious incidents since the end of the Korean War, and by December 18 former UN ambassador Bill Richardson said tensions had escalated to become "the most serious crisis on the Korean peninsula since the 1953 armistice which ended the Korean War."

Stray Animals Rescued on South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island after Shelling Attack
For more news visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com South Korean animal welfare groups went to Yeonpyeong Island on Tuesday to help injured dogs and cats left behind by their owners who evacuated the island after North Korea's attack last week. The artillery shells killed four South Koreans, including two civilians. Most of the 1600 residents fled the mountainous island that lies less than two miles from the disputed sea border and well within range of North Korea's artillery. Now, hungry dogs and cats roam the deserted streets. Members of animal welfare groups took food supplies for the animals and administered first aid to the injured pets. [Jo Hee-kyong, Korean Society for Animal Freedom] "If you abandon dogs, and they produce puppies without people's care, they will become wild dogs. Then you will have to cope with a social problem with many stray dogs all around Yeonpyeong Island." Island residents estimate that there are about 200 dogs and cats on the island. Animal welfare workers said they have helped about 50 dogs and 10 cats so far. [Park So-yeon, Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth]: "We helped dogs with serious cuts from shell splinters. We also saved dogs with broken legs and little dogs attacked by other stray dogs." Tensions on the peninsula are at their highest levels in recent years since the attack, which was one of the heaviest in the region since the Korean War ended in 1953 in a truce without a peace treaty.

North Korea Bombards South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island in Deadly Attack
(Nov. 23) -- North Korea fired more than 100 artillery shells onto a South Korean border island today, killing two southern marines and wounding 18 others in a brazen attack that prompted the South to return fire and put its military on its highest alert. President Barack Obama was awoken around 4 am with news of the clash, and is phoning South Korea's president, the BBC reported. It is unclear what, if anything, President Obama has done or said to either North or South Korea regarding this situation. The UN Security Council plans to hold an emergency meeting today or Wednesday to discuss the attack, a French diplomat told Reuters. South Korean Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young in parliament raised the possibility of asking the United States to deploy tactical nuclear weapons, which were withdrawn from the South in 1991. Today's exchange of fire marks one of the peninsula's most serious clashes since the Korean War ended without a peace treaty in 1953. Both sides accused the other of firing first. Angry South Koreans Protest North's Attack on Yeonpyeong Island
For more news & videos visit ☛english.ntdtv.com South Koreans continue to protest against North Korea's attack on Yeonpyeong Island from two weeks ago. Two civilians and two members of the military were left dead, in what is being called by many, the most aggressive move by the North in years. South Korean protesters continue to rally against the North on Wednesday. Some 150 protesters gathered in downtown Seoul to denounce the communist state's recent artillery shelling of Yeonpyeong Island. Angry war veterans and conservative activists condemned the North. [Choo Sun-hee, Protest Leader] "We're here to shave our heads and burn photos as a sign of protest because our sense of national security is lacking and collapsing. Our seniors who experienced the Korean War came out here to make the people realize the situation." Protesters burned North Korean flags and photos of communist leader Kim Jong-il and his son Kim Jong-un. And at a separate rally at Seoul's Chinese Embassy, dozens denounced Chinese authorities because they say Beijing is supporting the North. [Choi Chul-woong, Sec'y General, North Korea Freedom Federation]: "We insist that the Chinese government who is taking the side of North Korea should know it will be facing isolation and denunciation in the international society. We're here to let China know it." The International Criminal Court is now investigating whether North Korean forces committed war crimes attacking Yeonpyeong Island.

Yeonpyeong Island Residents Concerned About North Korean Attack
For more news visit ☛english.ntdtv.com South Korea's Yeonpyeong island residents have returned home, but worry about the threat from North Korea. They fear another possible attack from the North, with South Korean military drills set to start next week. Residents of South Korea's Yeonpyeong Island have returned home after a shelling attack from North Korea back in November. But residents are still concerned about the threat of an attack from the North. Some of the islanders are worried that a South Korean military drill will trigger yet another attack from its communist neighbor. [Choi Ik-seon, Yeonpyeong Island Resident] "Most of the residents who left the island after the shelling have returned. So life here has stabilized now, but I am worried about the military training in March." [Ko Young-ja, Yeonpyeong Island Resident]: "I felt scared again when I passed by an area which was burned down by North Korean shells. There's a rumor that the South Korean military will start artillery exercises again, so I am worried about another possible North Korean attack." However, many still believe the South Korean military should continue protecting the territory by conducting military drills near the island. [Choi Cheoi-young, Yeonpyeong Island Resident]: "Our office delivers the military training announcements from our army to the residents through loudspeakers. Our military has staged training exercises before the North Korean shelling on November 23. I believe the military ...

South Koreans remember Yeonpyeong
South Koreans remember Yeonpyeong Conservative protesters in South Korea held an anti-North Korea rally on Thursday (November 22) to mark the second anniversary of North Korea's shelling of the border island of Yeonpyeong. About 7000 protesters, including war veterans in military uniform, gathered in front of Seoul Central Station for the rally. They burned North Korea's national flag and placards of North Korea's late leader Kim Jong-il and South Korea's former president Roh Moo-hyun holding hands. They also chanted anti-North slogans and sang an army song. At the end of the rally, the protesters launched 600 balloons in memory of those killed during the attack. The North's shelling of Yeonpyeong island in November 2010 killed four people, including two civilians, and was the first attack on civilians since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

Two civilians in South Korea were laid to rest on Monday... victims of North Korea's artillery shell attacks two weeks ago on Yeonpyeong Island. Many lawmakers and Marines joined the funeral ceremony held at a hospital in Incheon. The wife of one of the victims urged the government to make the country militarily stronger. [Kang Seong-ae, Victim's Wife] "I don't want to see this kind of tragedy again. Our country should strengthen our power. I ask earnestly our government to try to be stronger, so that we do not see this kind of tragedy again." The funerals for the two civilians had been delayed until the victims' family members and the government reached an agreement on the funeral procedure and compensation.
