Slip is a woman's undergarment worn beneath a dress or skirt to help it hang smoothly and to prevent chafing of the skin from coarse fabrics such as wool. Slips are also worn for warmth, and to protect fine fabrics from perspiration. A full slip hangs from the shoulders, usually by means of narrow straps, and extends from the breast to the fashionable skirt length. A half slip hangs from the waist. It may also be called a waist slip or more rarely a petticoat.

Slips are often worn to prevent the show through of intimate undergarments such as panties or a brassiere. A slip may also be used to prevent a silhouette of the legs showing through clothing when standing in front of a bright light source. Other uses for slips are to make a dress or skirt hang properly, the prevention of chafing to the skin, to protect the outer garment from damage due to perspiration, or for warmth, especially if the dress or skirt is lightweight and thin. In very warm and/or humid climates a slip made from 100% cotton may be desired.

Types of slips[link]

Slips fall into two major categories. A full slip is hung from the shoulders by straps that extend down to the top of the breast area. Full slips come in a variety of lengths; some extend down to the upper thigh, some to just above the knees, or just below the knees, while others go down to just above the ankles. A waist slip, sometimes referred to as a "half slip" is held on to the body around the waist by means of an elastic waistband. The waist slip is also available in the same lengths as the aforementioned full slip. Waist slips that extend down to just above the ankle are often called "formal", or "maxi" slips. "Mini slips" are yet another size option for waist slips. They were first introduced in the 1960's to wear under a mini skirt. American Maid manufactured waist slips that had vents,and a rear zipper in addition to the elastic waistband. These slips were made of 50% nylon & 50% dacron polyester. As an alternative to the full slip, a waist slip with a matching camisole can be worn. There is also a type of "slip" designed to be worn under pants known as "pettipants". In addition to pants, a pettipant may also be worn under a dress or skirt, and like slips, they are mainly made of nylon.

Decorations and fabric[link]

Many slips have floral lace at the hem and/or the "vents" or "sideslits". Some of the older slips have decorations, such as a butterfly or flowers sewn into the fabric of the slip, and a pillowtab was also added to the waistband of a waist slip. The vast majority of slips are made of 100% nylon, while others are made from polyester, rayon, acetate, silk or in some cases cotton. Still, there are others made of blends, and the label of the garment might read "40% nylon, 35% rayon, 25% polyester". Nylon slips are often shiny in appearance, and are very smooth to the touch, while polyester slips can even be more shiny with a real slippery feel, especially charmeuse or "satin" slips. Although charmeuse slips have very attractive eye appeal, they are not as durable as nylon slips, and often tear very easily, especially when wet.

Slips made in the 1940's were mainly made of 100% rayon due to the war effort. In the late 1940's, some nylon slips began to appear on the market, and the vast majority of slips made in the 1950's were nylon.In the 1960's,slips were offered in a much more variety of colors,including multi colored slips.Slips with a floral print design were also made available.Some of the most well known slip brand names of the past are: Lorraine, Dior, Velrose, Mel-Lin, Shadowline, Wonder Maid, Warner's, Kayser, Maidenform and Van Raalte among others. There are well established slip/lingerie manufacturers still in operation today such as Vanity Fair, and Vassarette.

Modern slips[link]

Most of the slips made today are very plain, and are lacking in detail. Intricate decorations and lace designs are almost completely absent from modern day slips. As far as popularity,slips are not worn nearly as much as a few decades ago. Most transparent skirts and dresses now come with a lining making slips redundant.

Veena Malik (Urdu: وينا ملک, born Zahida Malik) is a Pakistani actress, model and comedienne. Over a span of ten years, she has worked with news channels and in movies.

Veena Malik was born in Rawalpindi in the province of Punjab,^[1] to Ali Malik, and his wife, Zeenat Malik.^[2] . She holds a BA in Sociology, Psychology and Persian.^[1]

Before starting her career off as an actress, Malik worked as a comedian for several television shows and series. She made her acting debut alongside Shaan and Zara Sheikh in Askari's Tere Pyar Mein (2000), which was a box office hit. She played a supporting role in the film and was barely acknowledged. However, she appeared in a supporting role in Javed Sheikh's Yeh Dil Aap Ka Huwa (2002).

In 2003, Malik appeared in Indo-Pak cross venture Punjabi film Pind Di Kuri which failed to do so well, however, the film turned out be the first Indo-Pak venture film with a budget of approximately 70 million rupees. She also appeared in Askari's Sassi Punno (2003) alongside Sana and Moammar Rana, however the film failed to do well at Lahore's cinemas and further screenings had stopped in cinemas after a week of its release. She then appeared in Rafique's Jageer.

In 2005, she appeared in a short Punjabi film Bau Badmash (2005) which did not garner any recognition due to the lack of big stars. She then appeared in Reema Khan's Koi Tujh Sa Kahan (2005) which was a commercial success in Pakistan.In 2007, she won her first Lux Style Award for being the most stylish celebrity on the red carpet.^{[citation needed]}

In 2008, Malik appeared in Rafique's Punjabi film, Mohabbatan Sachiyan, alongside ex-fiancee Babrik Shah and newcomers Maria Khan and Adnan Khan. The film went on to become a commercial success.^[3] The same year, she appeared in Raza's Kabhi Pyaar Na Karna in a supporting role, but the film was a flop. Her last film of 2008 was Altaf's Ishq Beparwah, which also failed to impress the audience.

In 2007, she graced the red carpet event of the Lux Style Awards and was awarded as being the ‘most stylish celebrity on the carpet’.^[7]

In October 2010, Malik appeared in the Indian television reality show Bigg Boss Season 4.^[8] She was evicted two weeks before the finals, and was one of the final six contestants out of the original fourteen who had participated.^[9] Malik was also part of the finale of the show.^[10] After her Bigg Boss stay, she was mentioned in the media as the voice of liberal muslims, including leading dailies, Daily Times,^[11] Express Tribune,^[12] and The Australian.^[13] Sabbah Hajim, from the Haji Amina Charity Trust in Jammu and Kashmir, writing in the magazine Tehelka, when comparing her with liberal rector of Darul Uloom Deoband, Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi said, "these two newly public figures might teach Muslims to stop feeling eternally outraged."^[14]

In February 2011,^[15] Veena Malik became part of the Cricket World Cup reality show^[16] in Delhi, India, called "Big Toss." Big Toss was a reality game show with contestants and Malik as the captain of one team, against Rakhi Sawant^[17] and her team.

In March 2011, Malik engaged in a passionate debate with a mufti, who claimed she had engaged in immoral behaviour as a contestant on Bigg Boss, even though he admitted to not having watched the show. Malik countered pointing out the double standards of Pakistani media against women among other rebuttals.^[18]

Controversy resulted in Pakistan over a nude image of Malik on the cover of FHM magazine India edition in which she had "ISI" written on her upper arm – the initials of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence spy agency. ^[19] Malik says she was topless^[20] but did not pose completely nude,^[21] and has sued the magazine over the images.^[22]

Rosie Alice Huntington-Whiteley^[3] (born 18 April 1987) is an English model and actress, best known for her work for lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret and Burberry, and also for her role as Carly Spencer in the 2011 film Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third installment in the Transformers film series.^[4]

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was born at the (now closed) Freedom Fields Hospital in Plymouth, Devon, England. Her mother, Fiona (née Jackson), is a fitness instructor, and her father, Charles Andrew Huntington-Whiteley, is a chartered surveyor.^[5][6] Her paternal great-great-grandfather was politician Sir Herbert Huntington-Whiteley, 1st Baronet; Herbert's son, Eric, was the "black sheep" of the family, and had married Rosie's great-grandmother, Enid Kohn, who was from a family of Polish Jews who immigrated to England in the 1870s.^[7][8]

Huntington-Whiteley grew up on a farm in Tavistock, Devon. She attended Milton Abbot Primary School from a young age, before joining Tavistock College where she was discovered by Profile Model Management while seeking internships with several London-based modelling agencies.^{[9] [9]} At secondary school, she was bullied and teased at school for having a double-barrelled name, small breasts, and for her full lips.^[10][3] Her first modelling session was at 16, posing for a Levi's commercial.^[3] In 2004, Huntington-Whiteley was photographed by Bruce Weber for Abercrombie & Fitch.^[11]

Since 2006, Huntington-Whiteley has modeled for American lingerie brand Victoria's Secret. The model made her Victoria's Secret debut at the brand's 2006 show in Los Angeles.^[9]

Huntington-Whiteley remained unknown in the fashion industry up until 2008, when she was cast by chief creative director Christopher Bailey, replacing Agyness Deyn for Burberry's fall/winter campaign with actor Sam Riley.^[9][12][13] She got her first British Vogue cover, for the November 2008 issue, alongside Eden Clark and Jourdan Dunn in a feature celebrating British models.^[9] The following year, she was featured as the face of Karen Millen's spring/summer 2009 advertising campaign.^[14] Huntington-Whiteley received an Elle Style Award for 2009's "Model of the Year".^[15] She starred in a short film for Agent Provocateur playing a woman whose boyfriend forgets Valentine's Day.^[9] For fall/winter 2009, she modelled campaigns for Godiva and Miss Sixty.^[16] In late 2009, Huntington-Whiteley officially became a Victoria's Secret Angel,^[9] modelling for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in New York City.^[17]

In May 2010, it was announced that Huntington-Whiteley would become the new female lead in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, released June 29 2011, replacing Megan Fox.^[4] She had previously worked with the film's director, Michael Bay, on a Victoria's Secret commercial.^[38] MTV Networks' NextMovie.com named her one of the 'Breakout Stars to Watch for in 2011'.^[39] Prior to the film's release, she won the "Female Star of Tomorrow" award at the 2011 CinemaCon Awards.^[40] Critics were highly critical of the ineffectiveness of Huntington-Whiteley and co-star Shia LaBeouf. Peter Travers stated the two "couldn't be duller."^[41] Jason Solomons of The Observer wrote that "we're first introduced to Rosie via a close-up of her bum, segueing straight from the film's opening sequence and titles on to the pert buttocks and underwear of our heroine," and that Huntington-Whiteley's English posh girl accent "renders her practically unintelligible when surrounded by American accents and falling masonry."^[42] Much of the criticism towards Rosie Huntington-Whiteley compared her in an unfavorable light to Megan Fox. Lou Lumenick said that her "'acting' makes...Megan Fox look like Meryl Streep in comparison."^[43] Baz Bamigboye gave his review of the film the title 'Come back Megan Fox, all is forgiven...'.^[44] In a positive review, Drew McWeeny of HitFix said, "She reminds me of Cameron Diaz in The Mask, an actress who doesn't really show off any range, but who gives a natural, winning performance and who is up to the challenge of this particular picture."^[45]

Huntington-Whiteley dated Tyrone Wood, the youngest son of musician Ronnie Wood, from August 2007 until October 2009.^[46] When the pair separated, she began a brief relationship with French actor Olivier Martinez that ended in early 2010.^[9][18] In April 2010, it was first reported that she was in a relationship with English actor Jason Statham after they were seen at the Coachella Festival.^[9][47]
