www.euronews.com The International Court of Justice in the Hague, on Monday, began hearing an extradition request for Hissen Habre, the former President of Chad. Lawyers are calling for Habre to be tried in Belgium for crimes against humanity. The 69-year-old - who human rights groups have described as the "African Pinochet" - is alleged to have been behind the ethnic cleansing of an estimated 40000 people during the 1980s. Habre, who's been in exile in Senegal since he was overthrown in 1990, denies the charges. Authorities there have denied repeated requests to extradite the former president after Belgium issued an arrest warrant for him in 2005. The following year, Senegal agreed to try Habré, who's accused of crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture. But he has never gone on trial. Ongoing violence in Syria has spilled further into Lebanon, amid fears of a widening regional destabilisation. At least seven people have been killed and more than 100 wounded in sectarian clashes in the city of Tripoli. Lebanese army troops were forced to withdraw after coming under heavy fire when they tried to subdue heavy sectarian fighting. The clashes between Sunni Muslims and Alawites, fuelled by tensions over the civil war in Syria, continued for a second night, security and medical sources said. Gunmen in the Sunni district of Bab al Tabbaneh and their Alawite rivals in Jebel Mohsen have exchanged gun and grenade fire, despite action by Lebanese troops deployed in the port city, residents said. Two of the dead men were identified as residents of Jebel Mohsen, a hill inhabited mainly by Alawites which overlooks the predominantly Sunni area below, where five people were killed, medical sources said. The area is one of Lebanon's most volatile sectarian fault lines and chronic Sunni-Alawite tensions in Tripoli have been heightened by the 17-month-old, mainly Sunni, uprising in Syria against President Bashar al Assad, an Alawite. Meanwhile, the Syrian army has deployed tanks on a ring road surrounding Damascus on Wednesday and shelled southern neighbourhoods where rebels operate, killing at least eight, residents said. Greece is asking for more breathing space to implement financial reforms and spending cuts, which have sparked years of widespread protests. The Prime Minister has to convince the Eurozone top brass later this week that he's done enough to receive the next bailout installment. It's worth 31-and-a-half-billion Euros, without which Greece will default and potentially exit the currency union. The PM's expected to ask for two more years to get reforms in place. Economist Yanis Varoufakis says getting the delay will do more harm than good.
