Jordanian and Israeli farmers use barn owls to control pests
Seven barn owl chicks nestled together in a wooden box in Israel's Beit Shean valley are not fuzzy and cute exotic pets, but they have become functional as they are the success of a decade-long project to use their species as biological pesticides. In 2002, Jordanian and Israeli farmers wanted to end the use of poisons and toxic pest controls but still needed a way to safeguard their products from rats and mice. The farmers, along with Israel's Society for the Protection of Nature and Jordan's General Mansour Abu-Rashid, began placing nesting boxes where the barn owls would breed in, up to 2600 boxes in fields on the Israeli side of the border, hundred which are used by Jordanian farmers. According to Ornithologist Dr. Motti Charter from Haifa University, around ten years would pass until an Israeli male owl and Jordanian female owl coupled up and bred. "For them, they don't know that the border is here and they probably met, you know, not like people at a bar or something like that, they met one night and decided to have -- that they fell in love and they started a nest here," Charter said. "The whole concept is that, you know, it doesn't matter if it's Jordanian or Israel, they're barn owls. And for us it's a great success story because it shows, because of the Jordanians started thinking differently, started using the barn owls, they succeeded." Beit Shean valley is home to the world's largest population of barn owls. There are 25300 pairs per square kilometer and each ...

It is a remnant of the ancient wall that surrounded the Jewish Temple's courtyard and is one of the most sacred sites in Judaism outside of the Temple Mount itself. Just over half the wall, including its 17 courses located below street level, dates from the end of the Second Temple period, being constructed around 19 BCE by Herod the Great. The remaining layers were added from the 7th century onwards. The Western Wall refers not only to the exposed section facing a large plaza in the Jewish Quarter, but also to the sections concealed behind structures running along the whole length of the Temple Mount, such as the Little Western Wall - a 25 ft (8 m) section in the Muslim Quarter.

Jordanian Protesters Demand Cutting Ties With Israel
Hundreds of Jordanians took to the streets of Amman on Friday, calling on their government to end the country's peace treaty with Israel. The protesters urged their leaders to cut ties with the Jewish state and to expel the Israeli ambassador from Amman, chanting, "Death, death to Israel." The 18-year-old peace treaty is a contentious issue for Jordanians, and most consider it a failure. The demonstrations came in response to King Abdullah's recent nomination of Prime Minister Fayez Tarwneh. Tarwneh was a major contributor in the 1994 Jordan-Israel peace process. The subject of this protest was unique. Since last year's "Arab Spring" revolutions, Jordan has experienced hundreds of large protests calling for the reforming of the government. But this demonstration was aimed straight at the Jewish state, showing that anti-Israeli sentiment is on the rise even in nations that have had a history of cooperation with Israel. As the enemies of Israel grow bolder, the Jewish state's very existence will become more precarious. Watch for this trend to intensify to the point that Israel will desperately seek a new ally for help.

Jordanians rally in support of Syrians
Syrians living in Jordan rallied in the capital Amman on Friday to show their solidarity with protesters in Syria demanding the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad. Syrian migrant workers in Libya also staged similar protests in the capital Tripoli, asking Assad to step down after a 10-month long violent crackdown that has seen 5000 people die. While protestors in the region expressed their support for Syrians, Arab League monitors visited the Omayyades mosque in Damascus for Friday prayers, the time when protest violence usually flares up on a weekly basis. The visit, which was meant to witness cultural aspects of the country, came ahead of a trip by Mohamed al-Dabi, chief monitor, to the Arab League headquarters in Cairo to report on the mission's finding since it began on December 26. Hundreds of civilians have been killed since. The mission has been riddled with controversy as some critics debate the nature of it, deeming it more of a diplomatic alibi for Assad rather than a serious attempt to resolve the crisis in Syria. French president Nicolas Sarkozy said the repression of the country's opposition was only deteriorating Syria's situation, and the European Union is anticipated to slap further sanctions against Syria on Monday ranging from individuals to institutions. Sanctions against oil exports have already cost the country nearly two billion dollars. By Noora Faraj Al Arabiya with Agencies

Barns Owls Used as Pesticides in Israeli-Jordanian Project
The seven barn owl chicks cuddled together in a wooden nesting box in Israel's Beit Shean valley were hissing with discontent, not knowing that they signal the success of a decade-long project to use the birds of prey as biological pesticides. Jordanian and Israeli farmers decided in 2002 that they wanted to get rid of harmful poisons and toxic means of pest control without leaving their product to the mercy of rats and mice. With the help of Israel's Society for the Protection of Nature and Jordan's General Mansour Abu-Rashid, farmers began to place nesting boxes in their fields for the barn owls to bread in. It took ten years before an Israeli male and a Jordanian female coupled up and bread, said Ornithologist Dr. Motti Charter from Haifa University and the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel. "The whole concept is that, you know, it doesn't matter if it's Jordanian or Israel, they're barn owls. And for us it's a great success story because it shows, because of the Jordanians started thinking differently, started using the barn owls, they succeeded," he added. PETRA - Large Monument in Petra | About the Jordanian ancient city of Petra | πέτρα |
PETRA SIGHTSEEING - About the Jordanian ancient city of Petra - البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ Evidence suggests that settlements had begun in and around Petra in the eighteenth dynasty of Egypt (1550-1292 BC). It is listed in Egyptian campaign accounts and the Amarna letters as Pel, Sela or Seir. Though the city was founded relatively late, a sanctuary existed there since very ancient times. Stations 19 through 26 of the stations list of Exodus are places associated with Petra. This part of the country was Biblically assigned to the Horites, the predecessors of the Edomites. The habits of the original natives may have influenced the Nabataean custom of burying the dead and offering worship in half-excavated caves. Although Petra is usually identified with Sela which means a rock, the Biblical references refer to it as "the cleft in the rock", referring to its entrance. The second book of Kings xiv. 7 seems to be more specific. In the parallel passage, however, Sela is understood to mean simply "the rock" (2 Chronicles xxv. 12, see LXX). On the authority of Josephus (Antiquities of the Jews iv. 7, 1~ 4, 7) Eusebius and Jerome (Onom. sacr. 286, 71. 145, 9; 228, 55. 287, 94) assert that Rekem was the native name and Rekem appears in the Dead Sea Scrolls as a prominent Edom site most closely describing Petra and associated with Mount Seir. But in the Aramaic versions Rekem is the name of Kadesh, implying that Josephus may have confused the two places. Sometimes the Aramaic versions give ...

International Judge Named Jordan's Prime Minister
Jordan's King Abdullah appointed Awn al-Khasawneh, a former judge at the International Court of Justice, as prime minister in order to promote public confidence in a reform process that has been hit by several instances of violence and government failings. Al Arabiya correspondence, Saad Silawi conducted an exclusive interview with Jordanian Prime Minister.
