The Kosovo War (1998–99) – The Last Yugoslav War and NATO's Bold Intervention
The Kosovo War was an armed conflict that took place in the Balkan region of Europe from 1998 to 1999. The conflict arose from tensions between the Albanian-majority population of Kosovo, a province of Serbia, and the Serbian government led by President Slobodan Milošević. The Kosovo War resulted in a NATO-led military intervention, which ended the conflict and led to the establishment of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) to govern the province.
The origins of the Kosovo conflict can be traced back to the 1980s when tensions began to escalate between the Serbian government and the Albanian population of Kosovo. The Albanians, who comprised roughly 90% of the population in Kosovo, had long felt marginalized and discriminated against by the Serbian govern...

How did Kosovo become a country?
Kosovo, Europe's newest country, was formed 10 years ago this week. It is peaceful today, but the path to its creation lay in one of Europe's most brutal sectarian conflicts. Warning: this film contains graphic content.

In 2008, Kosovo became Europe’s newest country. This small, landlocked state of two million people emerged as a result of one of Europe’s most brutal sectarian conflicts since the second world war.
Today Kosovo is peaceful, but poor. Unemployment is high and the grey economy accounts for about 30% of the country’s economic activity. And Kosovans are the only citizens in Europe to not have visa free access to the rest of the continent.
The country is still divided along ethnic lines. 90% of it...

Could Kosovo be the next Ukraine? | Dispatch
Before the Kosovan police begin their patrol of the border with Serbia, they load up the car with weaponry: AK47s are strapped to the back of car-seats, handguns dropped in the footwells, and drones and bullet-proof vests stuffed in the Land Rover’s boot.
This is now standard protocol on one of the most volatile frontiers on the European continent.
Since Kosovo won independence from Yugoslavia in a bloody war that ended in 1999, it has played host to a small community of ethnic Serbs in the northern border region.
Tensions with the ethnic Albanian majority have surged lately.

The Albanians, who comprised roughly 90% of the population in Kosovo, had long felt marginalized and discriminated against by the Serbian government, which viewed Kosovo as an integral part of Serbia. The Serbian government under President Milošević revoked Kosovo's autonomy, sparking protests and violence. The Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), an Albanian guerrilla group, emerged in 1996, and began a campaign of attacks against Serbian police and military targets in Kosovo. The conflict escalated in early 1998, with both sides committing atrocities and human rights violations. The Serbian military and police responded to the KLA's attacks with brutal force, including the massacre of dozens of ethnic Albanian civilians in the village of Racak in January 1999.
The international community, including the United States, European Union, and NATO, began to take notice of the conflict and attempted to broker a peace agreement between the Serbian government and the KLA. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, and NATO launched a military intervention in March 1999, after Serbian forces refused to withdraw from Kosovo. The NATO intervention, known as Operation Allied Force, involved a sustained bombing campaign against Serbian military and infrastructure targets, as well as the deployment of ground troops. The campaign succeeded in forcing the Serbian military to withdraw from Kosovo, and UNMIK was established to govern the province.
The Kosovo War resulted in significant human and material losses. Estimates suggest that over 10,000 people were killed, and hundreds of thousands were displaced. The conflict also left a lasting impact on the region, with tensions remaining high between Serbia and Kosovo. In 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia, a move that was recognized by many countries but not by Serbia, which still considers Kosovo to be a part of its territory. The status of Kosovo remains a contentious issue in the region, with some countries recognizing its independence, while others do not.

90% of its people are Albanian speakers and mostly Muslim. About 10% are ethnic Serbs, who are Orthodox Christians and live mostly in the north.
Why did such a small corner of the Balkans come to the world’s attention in 1999?
The origins of modern Kosovo date back over a century. When the new state of
Albania was formed in 1912, Kosovo was not included within its borders. Instead, Kosovars found themselves ruled by Serbia. As a Serbian province, Kosovo later became part of a new country: Yugoslavia.
With the fall of communism across central and eastern Europe, Yugoslavia began to disintegrate in the early 1990s. As Croatia and Bosnia & Hercegovina declared independence local Serbs who wanted to remain in the same state as Serbia went to war. They were fully backed by Serbia and the Serbian-controlled Yugoslav armies.
When those wars ended in 1995 Kosovo remained part of Serbia. Ethnic Albanians in Kosovo sensed that they too could gain their own independence.
But Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, wanting to keep what was left of Yugoslavia together, did not want to let Kosovo go. He’d made his intentions clear in a speech some years earlier.

In this video we travel to Kosovo*, the Schrodinger's country. Boasting a rich medieval history, Kosovo has been an epicenter of controversy as both Serbs and Albanians claim the territory as their own. Many wars have been fought over this land, such as the Battle of Kosovo 1389, The Balkan Wars, WWI, WWII, and the Kosovo War. Through this video we take you on the journey to explore 4 of Kosovo's most notable cities, Prishtina, Mitrovica, Peja/Pec, and Prizren, as we discuss the history that formed this land.

Have you heard of Kosovo? It's one of my favorite hidden gems in Europe, and I’m so excited to be back here for a 2nd visit! This time, I’m showing you what $10 USD can get you in this super affordable, yet incredibly unique country. From delicious local food to cultural experiences and even some unexpected surprises, I managed to stretch my money way further than you'd expect -- seriously, the value for your money here is insane!
In this video, I explore the vibrant streets of Prizren, diving into the local culture and trying out some authentic Kosovar dishes that are packed with flavor but super cheap. You’ll see how far $10 goes when it comes to food, transportation, and even a little souvenir shopping.
Kosovo isn’t just about affordability, though. The culture, the people, and the unique blend of history and modernity make it one of the coolest places to visit in the Balkans. I loved connecting with locals, learning more about their traditions, and experiencing the warm hospitality that makes this place feel so special. You won’t believe how much fun I had on this $10 adventure!

The Meaning of Name "KOSOVO"
History knew the part of the territory where Kosovo is today, called Dardani, as part of a larger concept, called "Illyria".
The etymology of the name Dardania has been associated with the Albanian word "dardha" meaning pear. Bardyllis was a king of Dardania whose name in Albanian literally means "White-Star" from Bardh(White) and Yll(Star)
Much wider than the part where Kosovo now lies, the former Dardania reached as far as Nis in the north, coming as far as Skopje, in the east there were the rivers Morava and Varadari and in the west the mountains of the Autoratories.
However, in the first century BCE, this geographical area fell under Roman rule, making Dardania a Roman province.
Could this name have Illyrian origins?

An interpretation about the Illyrian origin is given by the Croatian academic Josip Roglic, who in his writings mentions that the geographical names of the Illyrian Peninsula belong to the Illyrian language, thus the geographical term "Kosovo" belongs to the old Illyrian language.
Its basis is based on the fact that the name "Kosovo" is also found in some countries such as Dalmatia, Bosnia and Northern Macedonia.
"I must say that the name Kosovo we as an indigenous people do not encounter in the time of Illyria and Dardania",
In this regard, some other authors call this attempt of Serbia for Slavic etymology constructed.
Another theory is that throughout the territory of present-day Kosovo since antiquity we encounter a large number of Dardanian castles, which were later fortified by the Romans.
So the theory says that "Kos" is a continuation of the ancient word "Kas" which refers to huts or castles.
"I share a different opinion that the name of Kosovo derives from Kas-Kast-Kastle that falls to the castle. So the place of Castles because from Zvecan to Lipjan there were many castles ", says the historian Izet Miftari.
The name Kosovo is based on the complaint "kas". Kasovo, Kasua, Kasovia from written sources and geographical maps of the XVII century. Kasa, from Old Latin means house. So we are dealing with an urbanized place where there are houses ", says for RTV Dukagjini, Enver Rexha.
The name of a mining town, "Kasovo", is mentioned by various European roadmaps, as is the case of an English roadmap during 1601.
Also quoted is another author, the albanologist Johann Georg von Hahn who describes the location of that city
Among other things, this is evidenced by maps of the Ottoman period of 1854.
Even French authors of that time describe the road to that city with the phrase "Boschi Cossova" or the mountains of Kosovo.
This town is thought to be the village of Bellasica, in the northwest of the Prishtina region. During the field research, materials of a medieval fortification were found there.
Research has also been done along the road line that has crossed that area of that potential metallurgical city.
the Bellasica area does not seem to be the only research to uncover the truth. Research has also been done in the northeast of Prishtina, respectively in the village of Siqevë.
At that time Bellasica Castle is also thought to have been under the jurisdiction of Kassova Castle.
Even on Italian and German maps of the time, our country is written under the name "Kasova" - citing a piece of advice that existed northeast of Pristina.
Even from the writings of the Ottoman Empire of the time, on the eve of the battle of Kosovo in the XV century.
"There are some Italian and German maps, the name Kosovo is not mentioned but Kasova. The map clearly shows that in the northeast of Prishtina there was a castle Kosova…
This is also supported by the writings of Evliya Qelebi, in the 17th century, who was an Ottoman explorer who traveled to the territories of the former Ottoman Empire for 40 years.
That the origin of the name Kosovo is based on Latin, says the British Encyclopedia.
"An interesting information is given by the British Encyclopedia which says that the name Kosovo has a Latinized basis", says Enver Rexha, Director of Archeology of Kosovo.
