Loz Kaye on ACTA crash: Politically poisonous to be anti-Internet
Europe's Internet users welcomed the EU parliament's decision to reject a controversial anti-piracy treaty. ACTA which is an international trade agreement is aimed at preventing large-scale intellectual property theft. Critics claim the treaty would threaten people's web freedom. Outside the EU, ACTA has been signed by the US, Canada, Japan and several other countries. Loz Kaye, from the Pirate Party UK, says the rejection by the EU Parliament is a historic victory for citizens over lobbyists. Belarus cracking down on internet freedom
Internet users in Belarus are facing new restrictions as the government has begun blocking sites it considers to be "extremist". It is being seen as a potential setback for the country's opposition movement, who use the internet to organise themselves. President Aleksander Lukashenko faces an increasingly restive opposition, and demonstrations followed the last election he won, allegedly with 80 per cent of the vote. Many of those arrested are still in jail. From Friday, any internet site providing goods or services to users in Belarus must use the domain name '.by'. This would make it illegal for firms like Facebook, Amazon, or eBay to operate in the country. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports.

Anonymous vs CISPA: 'Bill fights imaginary threat'
Outcry from Internet users, over the controversial cyber security act 'CISPA', is set to spill onto the streets. The hacker group Anonymous is hitting back in response to the bill by launching what it calls 'Operation Defense Phase two'. CISPA, having passed the US House of Representatives on Friday, is now a step closer to becoming law. It's now heading to the Senate, as the White House continues to threaten a veto of the bill. The act could allow Internet companies to legally share sensitive user information with the American government - a move critics say infringes on privacy and civil liberties. Journalist David Seaman explains how this bill puts everyone at risk. Luke Samuel, from Online Magazine "Spiked" thinks the CISPA bill is one of the latest attempts by the US government to limit the first amendment rights of its citizens. What Is ACTA ?
ACTA - 'The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement' is a proposed plurilateral agreement for the purpose of establishing international standards on intellectual property rights enforcement. ACTA would establish a new international legal framework that would create its "own governing body outside existing international institutions" such as - the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) or the United Nations. An open letter signed by many organizations, including Consumers International, EDRi (27 European civil rights and privacy NGOs), the Free Software Foundation (FSF), the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), ASIC (French trade association for web 2.0 companies), and the Free Knowledge Institute (FKI), states that "the current draft of ACTA would profoundly restrict the fundamental rights and freedoms of European citizens, most notably the freedom of expression and communication privacy." [UPDATE] - It seems, SOPA and PIPA were just distractions! while they signed a copyright treaty "ACTA" behind the curtain... US, Australia, Japan, Switzerland, and many EU nations have already signed this secret censorship pact last year in 2011. The Recent country to join the list is - Poland. video.nixxon.net www.stop-acta.info Pls sign this petition - www.avaaz.org

Anonymous vows to fight ACTA across Europe
A wolf in sheep's clothing -- that's how ACTA opponents have described the international copyright treaty. Thousands are to protest in Sweden on Saturday while in Poland the legislation has been suspended after attacks on government websites. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Friday that a wider discussion should be held before the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement comes into force. The talks should involve both Internet users and privacy protection agencies, Tusk added. Ratification of the document has been postponed pending the results of those talks. Meanwhile in Sweden, thousands of Internet users are expected to take to the streets of several major cities on Saturday. Over 11000 have signed up to attend the rallies on a Facebook page promoted by the "hacktivist" group, Anonymous. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Are Internet users at risk?
Google Tech Talks July 9, 2008 ABSTRACT In a perfect world, Software would be secure and we would not have to care about vulnerabilites that can get exploited while surfing the Internet. However, given that Google found more than 3 million malicious web addresses that try a drive-by download infection on the visitor's web browser, it's better to have a close look at the risk that our users are exposed to when surfing the web. This talk gives an analysis of how well vendors like Microsoft and Apple are performing regarding fixing reported software vulnerabilities. A strong indicator for the performance is the number of patches, which were not available when a vulnerability was publicly disclosed. The fluctuations in the patching speed also reveals interesting engineering related facts of the companies analyzed. Further more, the talk compares how well Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Opera users are doing in terms of following the best practice to always use the latest most secure Web browser version. By extracting browser versions from the user-agent strings in Google's web logs it was found that that more than 600 million Internet users worldwide don't follow this best practice. An absolutely PRICELESS scene from the episode "The US Poet Laureate (Season 3 Episode 16) Where CJ yells at Josh for interacting with some "crazies" on the internet. I absolutely loved this scene because it shows how often CJ yells at people like Sam and Josh, even though they outrank her. She's totally awesome

SOPA Ireland: Help save Ireland's Internet.
Email Minister Sean Sherlock: sean.sherlock@oireachtas.ie Sign the Petition stopsopaireland.com Sign this second Petition for his resignation: www.thepetitionsite.com Dear Minster Sean Sherlock. On Thursday March 1st you signed off on an Internet anti-piracy law using a statutory instrument that has been dubbed the Irish SOPA. Even though millions of people around the world protested against such a law and SOPA, PIPA and ACTA were defeated. For some reason you thought it would be a good idea to ignore the cries of the majority of Internet users including the people who elected you, the 80000 Irish people who protested against it and instead you listened to a rich minority of corporate big wigs in the music and film industry. The law is so vague that it's hard to say what qualifies as a transgression. For example if I am at a wedding and I use my phone to film 30 seconds of the bride and groom on the dance floor. I then share it with my friends on Facebook only to receive a strike from my ISP or a fine or Facebook could be even be sued because of the copyrighted material I just uploaded. I'm of course referring to the background music that was playing while they were dancing. This is what this law is capable of doing and the Irish courts will be at the mercy of the corporations and rights holders. I will remind you that the concept of governments being controlled by corporations is one of the definitions of fascism. So obviously Facebook, who have offices here in Ireland ...

CISPA Snoops? 'We must know why Facebook, Google & Twitter support bill'
From private emails to financial records - US Internet companies could soon legally share private user information with the American government. The highly-controversial cyber security act, known as CISPA, is now a step closer to becoming law, following its approval in the House of Representatives. It caused a storm of reaction among internet users accusing it of infringing on privacy and civil liberties. Richard Stallman: CISPA nearly abolishes people's right not to be unreasonably searched
Soon, Americans may find every private email they write could be opened, copied and inspected by government snoopers. The latest cyber security bill - called CISPA - has passed the House of Representatives, coming a step closer to becoming law. President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the act, if it goes through in the Senate. He cited civil liberty concerns as the reason for his threat. CISPA has raised a massive outcry with internet users and freedom activists, who say it's a hard hit on people's privacy. Reaction now from Dr Richard Stallman, who's President of the Free Software Foundation. He's in Tunis. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

CISPA... Your creators, supporters, and counterparts have become sworn enemies of Anonymous. Expect us. Emergency Action Authorized. Follow @TheAnonMessage for the latest updates. #OpDefense #CISPAction TRANSCRIPT ______ Greetings citizens of the United States. We are Anonymous. Thursday, April 26th, the United States House, in a rushed vote, passed the HR 3523, also known as CISPA. Dubbed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, it allows the United States to collect information about users of the internet. It allows the United States to monitor all activity on the net and can be used to monitor any individual's internet usage. This monitoring is called deep packet inspection, it looks through everything that is going in and out of your computer, which is a blatant violation of our rights to privacy. Looking through your mail is a crime for a postman, these rules should apply to the internet too. The bill's intent is to help stop cyber attacks... However; the vague wording of the bill could allow the government to use this new power to go behind privacy protection and monitor, censor, and cut off online communication. President Obama has already stated that he will veto the bill, but this is also what was said about NDAA. Together, we can stop this act. The time to take action is now. We have defeated previous attempts to censor our only platform of true honest communication, the internet. SOPA was only the beginning. Sign petitions, call your congressmen, and ...
