GE: Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen issues challenge to opposition - 22Apr2011
SINGAPORE: Education Minister Ng Eng Hen has called on the opposition parties to be bold enough to say that they want to form a government. He issued the challenge on the sidelines of a market visit to Toa Payoh Vista on Friday. Accompanying him were Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng, Ms Josephine Teo, Mr Zainudin Nordin and Mr Hri Kumar. The group will likely be contesting the Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the May 7 General Election. The GRC may see its first contest in 14 years, with the Singapore People's Party (SPP) staking its interest there. While Mr Wong said that he welcomes a contest, Dr Ng had this challenge for all opposition parties. "If they can convince voters that they can build a better government, be a better government, take care of Singapore better than the voters and the PAP government, voters will vote for them. Otherwise, voters will say 'I will trust the people that have delivered'," said Dr Ng. As for opposition parties recruiting highly-educated candidates, Dr Ng said it all boils down to the parties' track record. "The real question and the simple calculation that voters all over Singapore will make (is) a very simple one," he said. "You've seen our residents, they just want to ask: One: can you improve my life? Two: will I trust you to be the government? And that's what voters will vote for, whatever party you come from." "I'm asking a simple question as a voter......No matter how bright you are, whether you are ...

Ng Eng Hen said defence budget to remain steady - 28Jan2012
SINGAPORE: Defence Minister Dr Ng Eng Hen said Singapore's defence spending will be kept on an even keel in 2012, regardless of the country's economic performance. His comments comes as Parliament gears up for the upcoming Budget and subsequent debates. Dr Ng said: "MINDEF will continue to spend steadily, whether it's up or down, whether the GDP grows very quickly, or slows. A steady defence budget and spending allows us to invest long-term into a very strong capability (for our military), which requires time to develop. So we'll maintain that on an even keel. We don't expect big upswings, neither big dips." Dr Ng was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Lunar New Year dinner at Toa Payoh Central. Organisers also had a special guest - a 23-foot God of Fortune statue, sponsored by the Toa Payoh Central Merchants' Association. Commenting on the corruption probe into two senior civil servants, Dr Ng said it is a timely reminder of the importance of exercising due diligence. To ensure integrity, he said, officials across the board must not be seen to be influenced when approving projects or tenders. Asked about the resignation of a third of the Singapore People's Party's members, Dr Ng declined specific comment. He said the constant philosophy of his grassroots leaders in Bishan-Toa Payoh is to serve the residents, and to work as if there is will always be a contest in the constituency.

Ng Eng Hen said Dr Patrick Tan didn't receive preferential treatment - 20Oct2011
SINGAPORE: Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said his ministry is acutely aware that all full-time NSmen must be treated equally, regardless of their background. Dr Ng said the equal treatment for National Service (NS) has been and must remain a cardinal principle because without strict adherence to this fundamental tenet, the commitment to NS will be severely eroded and the institution of NS weakened. Replying to questions in Parliament on the disruption of NS by Dr Patrick Tan, the son of President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Dr Ng said the disruption was in accordance with prevailing policies to obtain his medical degree. In addition, a longer period was granted to those admitted to US medical schools. He assured Singaporeans that neither Dr Patrick Tan, nor any other individual who has disrupted their NS, was given any preferential treatment because of their "connections". Some allegations that Dr Patrick Tan had received preferential treatment were made during the Presidential Election campaign in August. Dr Ng said the policy to allow full-time national servicemen (NSFs) to disrupt for medical studies in Singapore dates back to 1973. Then, Singapore needed military doctors to serve in the Singapore Armed Forces, a policy which continues today for local medical graduates. From 1981, this policy was extended to allow NSFs to study medicine overseas because the number of local graduates was insufficient. From 1981 to 1986, 38 NSFs were disrupted to go overseas. Ng Eng Hen: Servicemen's safety top priority - 14May2012
SINGAPORE: Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen has stressed that safety of servicemen is top priority for his ministry and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Dr Ng was responding to a question raised in Parliament over safety procedures and the recent spate of deaths involving servicemen. Dr Ng said every incident resulting in injury or death gets top management priority to make it right. The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) will also incorporate findings and recommendations from independent investigations by the Police and State Coroner. Where there are mistakes, Dr Ng said his ministry will own up to them, learn, rectify and continuously improve. Dr Ng also detailed MINDEF's investigation process. He said an independent Committee of Inquiry has been formed to look into the deaths of full-time national servicemen Private Amirul Syahmi Kamal, who was found hanged in a locked toilet cubicle, and Private Dominique Lee Rui Feng, who had collapsed after experiencing breathing difficulties while participating in an exercise involving the use of smoke grenades. Private Lee was noted to have a history of asthma during pre-enlistment screening with his last reported asthma attack more than three years prior to enlistment. "The concurrent investigations will examine all the facts to determine the cause of death, and if the asthma or smoke grenades were contributory factors. Smoke grenades have been commonly used for many years during military training and the SAF has not had any similar ...

Ng Eng Hen WARN S'poreans possible freak result if vote opposition - 23Apr2011
SINGAPORE : Education Minister Ng Eng Hen has warned of a possible freak result if Singaporeans vote the opposition into power in the coming polls. He said that the opposition must look to form an alternate government, and not just offer alternative voices in Parliament. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng took issue with the opposition sharing candidates. They were speaking at the launch of Heights Park in Bishan-Toa Payoh Group Representation Constituency (GRC) on Saturday. After meeting with residents at the opening of Heights Park, Education Minister Ng told reporters that voters need to ask themselves who will best serve their needs. He said Singaporeans should only vote for the opposition if they believe the opposition can run the country better than the People's Action Party (PAP). Dr Ng said: "Every election, it is never about just alternative voices in Parliament, because your vote is very powerful and for every General Election, you are deciding on who runs the country. If it is just for alternative voices, the NCMP scheme allows for that, you can raise anything you want in Parliament. "But as the opposition parties have clarified, that is not their intent. In fact, they want to - Workers' Party have said they want to block constitutional amendments, they want enough seats in the house not just to provide alternative voices, but really their goal is to form an alternative government - to become the government." One of the points in the Singapore ...
