May 11, 2012: USC Annenberg School of Communication 2012 Commencement Address by Maria Shriver The USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism celebrates the achievements of the Class of 2012! At the School of Communication satellite ceremony, USC Annenberg will be honoring candidates for bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in communication, communication management, global communication and public diplomacy. The Communication ceremony speaker, Maria Shriver, is a mother of four, a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning journalist and producer, a six-time New York Times best-selling author, and an influential voice on the shifting roles, emerging power and evolving needs of women in modern life. Shriver was California's trailblazing First Lady from 2003 to 2010. She herself is dedicated to creating empowering initiatives, transformative events, inspirational awards, and the groundbreaking series of Shriver Reports that chronicle and explore seismic shifts in the American culture and society today. Science, Serendipity and the Search for Truth
Award-winning science reporter, author and journalism professor KC Cole together with physics professor Clifford Johnson opened Science, Serendipity and the Search for Truth, a year-long series of conversations and performances examining science "alongside music, theater, journalism, religion, film, dance and other disciplines to see what serendipitous connections might bubble up. The informality of the presentations and discussions will encourage intellectual risk-taking--both on the part of the presenters and the audience." This first program focused on Uncertainty--the heart of quantum mechanics as well as matters of the heart. Cole engaged Johnson and the audience in conversation on uncertainty as it is used, abused and misunderstood in journalism and physics. This is USC Annenberg's inaugural event as part of the University's Arts & Humanities Initiative.

USC Annenberg Center Speaker Series: Henry Jenkins
Jan. 17, 2007 (University of Southern California): Henry Jenkins Presents "YouTube to YouNiversity" Speaker: Henry Jenkins is the founder and director of the Comparative Media Studies Program and the DeFlorz Professor of the Humanities at MIT, and is the author or editor of eleven books. Abstract: For those of you keeping score, the dotcom era has ended. The age of social networks and mobile media has emerged from its ashes. We are no longer talking about a digital revolution, which envisioned new media displacing the old. We are now talking about media convergence, where old and new media interact in ever more complex ways. We are no longer talking about interactive media technologies; we are talking about participatory culture. This presentation will address the terms of our participation in this new convergence culture, which are being shaped by governmental policies and court decisions but also by choices being made both in corporate boardrooms and in teenager's bedrooms. As fans, gamers, and bloggers, we are learning new ways to use media to serve our own ends and we are discovering new ways to pool our knowledge and work collaboratively to solve puzzles and master complex texts. What we are learning as consumers has the potential to change how we think as citizens. And these new social skills and cultural competencies have implications as well for the future of education.

Sept. 15, 2010: Dean's Open Forum - Jaron Lanier, USC Annenberg's 2010 Innovator In Residence Join Dean Ernest J. Wilson III for a discussion on "Self and reality: Finding clarity in the digital noise" with Jaron Lanier, USC Annenberg's 2010 Innovator in Residence. From Lanier: "We humans have always been able to confuse ourselves by letting the means we use to communicate get ahead of us. We certainly can do this by talking, and don't even get me started about writing. When networked computers came along, media became a nocturnal, hyperactive thing that keeps on chattering even when we aren't listening. It makes up arguments to itself and then expects us to go along with them. It also follows us around everywhere. What are we to do with this peripatetic constant companion?" Lanier, author of "You are not a Gadget: Manifesto" (Knopf, 2010), blogger and columnist, computer scientist, composer and visual artist, currently serves as partner architect at Microsoft Research, which he has been affiliated with since 2006. Time magazine named Lanier one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2010, and in 2005 Lanier was selected as one of the world's top 100 public intellectuals by readers of Prospect and Foreign Policy magazines.
