Kurt Meyer's Division on the Attack
Rifleman Arnott England talks about waking up in the night and hearing 18 of Kurt Meyers tanks coming in from the other side of town towards them. A tank fires a shell into a cache of mines near Arnott, and he is thrown back many yards and knocked unconscious. As hes falling, his thoughts flash through his mind, Well, I guess this is it.
Arnott England was born in Tabusintac, New Brunswick. He was the youngest of a large family, and his brothers stories about the war and what services they were in fired a desire in him to enlist. His long-suffering mother was very much against him going to war, as all her other boys had gone. He had great difficult getting accepted into the service because he was so small and slight (and only had a grade seven education). He enlists with the Regina Rifles...

Kurt Meyer, a prominent figure in the notorious Waffen-SS during World War II, left an indelible mark on history as a military officer whose actions and decisions sparked both admiration and condemnation. Born on December 23, 1910, in Jerxheim, Germany, Meyer would become a key figure in the Nazi war machine, eventually attaining the rank of SS-Obersturmbannführer.
Meyer's early military career was marked by his fervent dedication to the Nazi cause. He joined the SS in 1931 and swiftly rose through the ranks due to his unwavering loyalty and military prowess. During the invasion of Poland in 1939 and the subsequent campaigns in Western Europe, Meyer distinguished himself as a capable and determined officer, earning the respect of his superiors and comrades alike.
One of Meyer's most significant assignments came with the formation of the 12th SS Panzer Division, also known as the "Hitler Youth" division due to its recruitment from members of the Hitler Youth organization. Meyer, appointed as the division's commander, played a crucial role in shaping its identity and instilling a fanatical sense of loyalty among its members. The division quickly gained a reputation for its fierce combat capabilities and unwavering commitment to the Nazi ideology.
However, Meyer's legacy is stained by his involvement in war crimes during the Normandy campaign in 1944. Notably, he was implicated in the execution of Canadian prisoners of war during the Battle of Normandy, an act that would lead to his subsequent trial and imprisonment after the war. The trial, known as the "Battle of Normandy Trial," resulted in Meyer being found guilty of war crimes, and he was sentenced to death. However, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Despite his ignominious end, Kurt Meyer remains a complex and controversial figure in military history. His military acumen and unwavering commitment to the Nazi cause stand in stark contrast to the dark shadow cast by his involvement in war crimes. Meyer's story serves as a cautionary tale about the blurred lines between duty, ideology, and personal responsibility in times of war, leaving a lasting impact on how history views those who played key roles in the machinery of totalitarian regimes.

He enlists with the Regina Rifles, and they determine that his one particular skill was as a sharpshooter; hed been an avid hunter in rural New Brunswick. He arrives in Normandy shortly after D-Day, without having had any particular combat training, and encounters no difficulties through that first day. Then things began to change very quickly.
