Maria Eagle (born 17 February 1961) is a British solicitor and Labour Party politician. She is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Garston and Halewood, having been the MP for Liverpool Garston from 1997 to 2010.

Until 2010, she held the rank of Minister of State at both the Government Equalities Office and the Ministry of Justice. She was previously a Minister at the Department for Work and Pensions, the Department for Education and Skills, and the Northern Ireland Office. After the 2010 general election she became the Shadow Solicitor General.^[1] On 8 October 2010, Eagle was announced as the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport in Ed Milliband's new shadow cabinet.

Early life[link]

Eagle was born in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire,^[2] the daughter of a printworker, she was educated at St Peter's Church of England School in Formby and Formby High School, before attending Pembroke College, Oxford, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics in 1983.^[3]

She then went to The College of Law, London, where she took her law finals in 1990.^{[citation needed]} She was a solicitor in the voluntary sector from 1983,^{[citation needed]} before she joined Brian Thompson & Partners in Liverpool as an articled clerk in 1990,^{[citation needed]} before becoming a solicitor with Goldsmith Williams in Liverpool in 1992,^{[citation needed]} and the senior solicitor at Steven Irving & Co also in Liverpool,^{[citation needed]} where she remained until her election to Westminster. Before entering parliament, Eagle concentrated on housing issues whilst a solicitor.^{[citation needed]}

Political life[link]

Eagle joined the Labour Party in 1978,^{[citation needed]} and was elected the secretary of the Crosby Constituency Labour Party (CLP) for two years in 1983,^[4] and was also elected as the campaigns organiser with that CLP for three years in 1993.^[4] She unsuccessfully contested the Crosby seat at the 1992 general election^[4] where she was defeated by the sitting Conservative MP Malcolm Thornton by 14,806 votes.^{[citation needed]}

For the following election Eagle was selected to stand for Labour in Garston through an all-women shortlist.^[5][6] She was elected to the House of Commons at the 1997 general election at Liverpool Garston^[4] following the retirement of the veteran Labour MP Edward Loyden.^{[citation needed]} Eagle held the seat with a majority of 18,417 and remained the MP until the constituency was abolished in 2010.^[4] She made her maiden speech on 17 June 1997.^[7]

Parliamentary career[link]

In parliament Eagle was a member of the Public Accounts Committee following her initial election,^[4] and in 1999 she was appointed the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of State at the Department of Health, John Hutton.^[4] She was promoted to the Tony Blair government following the 2001 general election as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions,^[4] and after the 2005 general election, she was the Minister for Children at the Department for Education and Skills,^[4] until the May 2006 reshuffle moved her to Northern Ireland,^[4] where she was Minister for more than one department at a time, including a period at the Department for Employment and Learning, on 29 June 2007 she moved to the Ministry of Justice. As part of the reshuffle of Gordon Brown's government in October 2008, she assumed additional responsibility for the Government Equalities Office.^[4] In the June 2009 reshuffle she was promoted to Minister of State within the justice department.^[4]

When she was first elected to parliament in 1997 she joined her twin sister, Angela Eagle, who had been elected at the previous parliament, to serve as one of the first set of twins in the House of Commons.^{[citation needed]} Another set of sisters, Sylvia Heal and Ann Keen, had both been elected at the 1997 election,^{[citation needed]} also, meaning that neither pair of sisters holds the record for being the first.

She has called for the ban on mink fur farming.^{[citation needed]}

After Labour lost the 2010 general election served in interim Labour leader Harriet Harman's front bench as Shadow Solicitor General^[8] and Shadow Justice Minister.^[4] In October 2010 Eagle was elected to the Shadow Cabinet of new Labour Party leader Ed Miliband as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport in the Labour Party Shadow Cabinet election.^[9]

Expenses controversy[link]

On 17 May 2009 The Daily Telegraph revealed that Eagle had claimed £3,500 for the refurbishment of the bathroom of her Liverpool home property, then switched her second home designation to a different property just four months later. Eagle voted in favour of legislation which would have kept MPs' expenses information secret.^[10]

Personal life[link]

Like her twin sister Angela, Maria Eagle is a very able chess player having played for England,^[11] and a keen cricketer.^[11]

Stewart Reuben (born 14 March 1939) is a British chess player, organiser and arbiter. He has officiated at and/or organised a number of high-level chess events held in Britain and elsewhere, including the world chess championship, and was chief organiser of British Chess Championship Congresses for a number of years. He is the author of several books on chess including Chess Openings - Your Choice! and The Chess Organiser's Handbook. He was the chairman of the British Chess Federation from 1996 to 1999, and is currently Marketing Director of the English Chess Federation. As of 2006, he is chairman of the FIDE Organisers' Committee and a member of other FIDE committees. He holds the FIDE International Arbiter and International Organizer titles, and is also a FIDE candidate master as a player. During the World Chess Championship Match between Kasparov and Short in 1993, he provided some of the live commentary for the audience at the Savoy theatre.

Stewart is also the author of several books on poker. These include How Good is your Pot-Limit Omaha, How Good is your Pot-Limit Hold'Em?, Poker 24/7: 35 years as a Poker Pro, and Starting Out in Poker. He also co-authored Pot-Limit and No-limit Poker with Bob Ciaffone.

Brooke "Medicine Eagle" Edwards is a New Age author and workshop presenter, specializing in her personal views and interpretations of Native American religions. She is a frequent workshop-presenter at New Age events.

Edwards is based in Montana, where she lives with her partner Sunny Baba. While she claims to be of the Montana Crow Indian lineage,^[1] there is controversy about whether she has any Native American heritage or training at all,^[2] and she has been accused by Native Americans of exploiting and misrepresenting Native American culture.^[2]

Federico Marchetti (Italian pronunciation: [fedeˈriko marˈketti]; born 7 February 1983 in Bassano del Grappa) is an Italian footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Serie A club Lazio. He has also represented the Italian national team, most notably making three appearances after Gianluigi Buffon's injury at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Torino[link]

A Torino youth system trainee, Marchetti made his professional debut on loan to Pro Vercelli, being then loaned to a number of other Serie C1 and Serie C2 teams in the following years: he spent the 2003–04 season as second choice keeper with Crotone and later Treviso, without making a single appearance with any of these teams. He started the 2004–05 season as third-choice keeper Torino, making a single appearance in his time with the granata as a substitute; he then asked^{[citation needed]} to be transferred in January 2005, after Torino signed another keeper, Gianluca Berti, and he was subsequently loaned to Pro Vercelli for the remainder of the season.

AlbinoLeffe[link]

In mid-2005, Torino which originally promoted to Serie A, went bankrupt and a new team started again in Serie B as successor, and all of the old Torino player were allowed to leave for free. He was signed by AlbinoLeffe and left for Biellese in co-ownership deal.^[2]

On June 2006, he was bought back by Serie B club AlbinoLeffe, initially as reserve to Paolo Acerbis. In his first season with the celeste, he made 13 appearances,^[3] being successively promoted as first choice keeper the following season.

During the 2007–08 season, his performances proved to be instrumental in AlbinoLeffe's historic first qualification to the promotion playoffs, where his club narrowly missed promotion to Lecce. He subsequently won the Serie B best goalkeeper award, thus raising significant interest from top flight teams.^[4]

Cagliari[link]

In July 2008, Cagliari agreed a loan bid with AlbinoLeffe for the goalkeeper, with Cagliari having an option to buy 50% of players' rights to an agreed price.^[5]

In his first season in the Serie A, Marchetti confirmed his performances, firmly ensuring a place in the starting lineup, his performances being praised by several football pundits, being also defined by Gianluigi Buffon as his favourite Italian young goalkeeper.^[6] On 1 February 2010, Cagliari bought the remain rights from AlbinoLeffe.^[7]

However, he was frozen by the club in 2010-11 season, as his transfer request denied^[8] He became the third keeper, behind Michael Agazzi and Ivan Pelizzoli. He was unfrozen on 3 April 2011, winning Genoa as unused bench.

Lazio[link]

Following the departure of their Uruguay international Fernando Muslera at the end of the 2010-11 season, Marchetti joined Lazio. President Claudio Lotito activated Marchetti's €5.2 million release clause.^[9] Marchetti arrived in Rome on July 5 to undertake a medical and sign a five-year contract. He described his move to Lazio as "the end of a nightmare".^[10]

International career[link]

In May 2009, following his impressive performances with Cagliari, Marchetti received his first call-up to Marcello Lippi's Italian national team for a friendly game versus Northern Ireland.^[11] He was featured in the game as a starter, and played the whole match, also keeping a clean sheet in a clear 3–0 win for the azzurri.^[12] Marchetti surprisingly made his World Cup debut in South Africa when he replaced the injured Gianluigi Buffon at half time during Italy's Group F clash with Paraguay. Marchetti kept a clean sheet, as Italy were already 1–0 down at the time of his introduction. In Marchetti's next two matches, he allowed in four goals out of five shots on goal.
