Neurosis is a class of functional mental disorders involving distress but neither delusions nor hallucinations. Neurosis may also be called psychoneurosis or neurotic disorder.
There are many different neuroses: obsessive–compulsive disorder, obsessive–compulsive personality disorder, impulse control disorder, anxiety disorder, hysteria, and a great variety of phobias.
According to C. George Boeree, professor emeritus at Shippensburg University, the symptoms of neurosis may involve:
Neurosis may be defined simply as a "poor ability to adapt to one's environment, an inability to change one's life patterns, and the inability to develop a richer, more complex, more satisfying personality."
Carl Jung found his approach particularly effective for patients who are well adjusted by social standards but are troubled by existential questions.
Pain of Mind is the debut studio album from the Oakland based band Neurosis. The album documents their early stages as a hardcore punk band in the vein of Discharge, Black Flag, Amebix, and Die Kreuzen. The 2000 reissue contains a special bonus disc that includes live tracks, live radio tracks, and demo tracks.
It was originally released on Alchemy Records in 1987 and later reissued by Alternative Tentacles in 1994 and by Neurot Recordings in 2000.
Notably featured on the front cover of the 1994 vinyl release is Pennsylvanian politician Robert "Budd" Dwyer, moments before he committed suicide during a televised press conference in 1987.

They seek position, marriage, reputation, outward success of money, and remain unhappy and neurotic even when they have attained what they were seeking. Such people are usually confined within too narrow a spiritual horizon. Their life has not sufficient content, sufficient meaning. If they are enabled to develop into more spacious personalities, the neurosis generally disappears.” - ...

WW1 War Neuroses- Disturbing footage of the effects of shell shock. Filmed during World War 1, this remarkable film shows traumatised soldiers staggering, shuffling, twitching, dancing and shaking however after treatment, the men are generally transformed. Seale Hayne in Devon was a military hospital which played an incredible role in curing shell shock victims during The Great War. At the time, most shell shock victims were treated harshly and with little sympathy as their symptoms were not understood and they were seen as a sign of weakness. No seed will grow of this barren earth. Our hope
unborn has died. I've slept in the dirt under the light
of the moon and I know our souls have perished.
Calling to those that would hear but I am deaf.
Clawing at those that would feel but I am dead to my
own fears.
Our cancer has grown into a stone. This water tastes
like poison. Your doomsday machine towers above
me to instill my vision.
Glowing pyre in the wind, like a glowing pyre in the
wind I stand to heal.
I tried to touch the feelings they have shown, our
cancer's grown into a stone. More cracks as our
ceiling caves in. This is our destiny.
