Atlanta (

Atlanta is the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area, which is home to 5,268,860 people and is the ninth largest in the U.S. It is a major component of a growing southeastern megalopolis known as the Piedmont Atlantic Megaregion. Atlanta is the county seat of Fulton County, and a small portion of the city extends eastward into DeKalb County.
Atlanta began as a settlement located at the terminus of a railroad line, and it was incorporated in 1845. Today, the city is a major business city and the primary transportation hub of the Southeastern United States (via highway, railroad, and air), with Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport being the world's busiest airport since 1998. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Atlanta as an "alpha(-) world city." With a gross domestic product of US$270 billion, Atlanta's economy ranks 15th among world cities and sixth in the nation. The city is a center for services, finance, information technology, government, and higher education. Metro Atlanta contains the country's third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies, and is the world headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company, Turner Broadcasting, The Home Depot, AT&T Mobility, UPS, and Delta Air Lines. As of 2010, Atlanta is the seventh most visited city in the United States, with over 35 million visitors per year.

Czechoslovakia or Czecho-Slovakia (Czech and Slovak: Československo, Česko-Slovensko) was a sovereign state in Central Europe which existed from October 1918, when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until 1992. From 1939 to 1945, the state did not de facto exist because of its forced division and partial incorporation into Nazi Germany, but the Czechoslovak government-in-exile nevertheless continued to exist during this period. Non-Akan states created by the Ga also existed as did states by the Dagomba. Prior to contact with Europeans trade between the Akan and various African states flourished due to Akan's gold wealth. Trade with European states began after contact with the Portuguese in the 15th century, and the British established the Gold Coast Crown colony in 1874 over parts but not all of the country.
The Gold Coast achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1957, becoming the First sub-Saharan African nation to do so from European Colonialism. The name Ghana was chosen for the new nation to reflect the ancient Empire of Ghana, which once extended throughout much of west Africa.

The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) was the Yugoslav state that existed from the abolition of the Yugoslav monarchy until it was dissolved in 1992 amid the Yugoslav Wars. It was a socialist state and a federation made up of six socialist republics: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. Serbia, in addition, included two autonomous provinces of Vojvodina and Kosovo and Metohija.
Initially siding with the Eastern bloc under the leadership of Josip Broz Tito at the beginning of the Cold War, Yugoslavia pursued a policy of neutrality after the Tito-Stalin split of 1948, and became one of the founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement. After the death of Tito in 1980, rising ethnic nationalism in the late 1980s led to dissidence among the multiple ethnicities within the constituent republics, followed by collapse of inter-republic talks on transformation of the country and recognition of their independence by some European states in 1991. This led to the country collapsing on ethnic lines, followed by wars fraught with ethnic discrimination and human rights violations.

The Soviet Union was a single-party state ruled by the Communist Party from its foundation until 1990. A union of 15 subnational Soviet republics, the Soviet state was structured under a highly centralized government and economy.
The Russian Revolution of 1917 caused the downfall of the Russian Empire. Following the Russian Revolution, there was a struggle for power between the Bolshevik party, led by Vladimir Lenin, and the anti-communist White movement. In December 1922, the Bolsheviks won the civil war, and the Soviet Union was formed with the merger of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, the Transcaucasian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic and the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Wednesfield is a town within the city of Wolverhampton, West Midlands. It is 2 miles (3.2 km) east-northeast of Wolverhampton city centre, and is part of the West Midlands conurbation. It is historically within the county of Staffordshire.
Its name comes from the Old English Wōdnesfeld meaning Woden's Field, open land belonging to, or holy to, the high god of the Germanic Pantheon.
It is reported by the Englisj Dialectal Society in the publication "A Glossary of dialectal place-nomenclature" available on-line in the Internet Archive of The University of Toronto Library, that the place name "Wednesfield" is pronounced by the local populace as "Wedgefield". Indeed, The 1871 Census enumerators have used the name "Wedgefield" rather than "Wednesfield" when recording the place of birth of some of those persons enumerated.
Local areas include Ashmore Park and Wood End. There is also a formal garden at Wednesfield Park.
Wednesfield lies at 52°35′59″N 2°04′54″W / 52.5998°N 2.0817°W / 52.5998; -2.0817 (52.5998°, -2.0817°), and is located to the northeast of Wolverhampton city centre on the northern fringe of the West Midlands conurbation. It is historically part of the county of Staffordshire, and since 1974 has been part of the West Midlands metropolitan county.

For Eurostat purposes Walsall and Wolverhampton is a NUTS 3 region (code UKG35) and is one of five boroughs or unitary districts that comprise the "West Midlands" NUTS 2 region. In 2004, the local government district had an estimated population of 239,100. Wolverhampton is part of the West Midlands Urban Area which had a population of 2.3 million in the 2001 census which makes it part of the second largest urban area in the United Kingdom.
Historically a part of Staffordshire, and forming part of the metropolitan county of the West Midlands from 1974, the city is commonly recognised as being named after King Wulfhere, who established an abbey in 659. The original name being from Wulfereēantūn = "Wulfhere's high or principal enclosure or farm" after the Mercian King. The name Wulfrun is used to denote a later nun who established a church in the city – for example, for the Wulfrun Centre or for Wulfrun Hall.

Angéla Németh (born February 18, 1946 in Budapest) is a former track and field athlete from Hungary, who was known as Angéla Ránky after her marriage. She competed for her native country at the 1968 Summer Olympics held in Mexico City, Mexico, where she won the gold medal in the javelin.
She was named Hungarian Sportswoman of The Year in 1968 and 1969 after having won the Olympic title in 1968 and the European title in 1969.

Ann Packer
Ann Elizabeth Packer MBE (born 8 March 1942 in Moulsford, Oxfordshire, UK) is a former British sprinter, hurdler and long jumper. She won a gold medal in the 800 metres at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Ann Packer was a member of Reading Athletic Club when she was selected for the British team, and working as a physical education teacher. She was in the 4 x 100 metres relay team that won a silver medal in the 1962 Commonwealth Games and a bronze medal in the 1962 European Athletics Championships.
Packer travelled to Tokyo in 1964 where she shared a room with long jump gold medallist Mary Rand. Packer was hoping to win her favourite event, the 400 metres, but was beaten into second place by Betty Cuthbert of Australia, despite setting a new European record (52.2sec). After winning a silver medal in the 400 metres Packer had no plans to run in the 800 metres and had a shopping trip planned until her fiancé, Robbie Brightwell finished fourth in the 400 metres. Disappointed for him, she turned to the 800 metres, an event which she had only raced in five times before, and never in international competition. Anna Pazera (born November 25, 1936 in Krzanowice, Racibórz, Śląskie) is a retired Australian athlete who was specialised in the javelin throw.
She was born as Anna Wojtaszek and competed for Poland at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. After the Games, she emigrated to South Australia, becoming Anna Pazera through marriage.
Pazera represented Australia at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff and threw a world record of 57.40 metres to win gold, breaking Dana Zátopková's recent mark by a metre and a half.
Her best Olympic performance was in 1960, when she placed sixth in the final of the Rome Games.
Remarried and known as Anna Bocson for the latter part of her career, she retired from sport after the 1968 Australian Championships.

Mildred Ella Didrikson was the sixth of seven children born in the coastal oil city of Port Arthur in southeastern Texas. Her mother, Hannah, and her father, Ole, were immigrants from Norway. Three of her six siblings were born in Norway, and the other three were born in Port Arthur. She later changed the spelling of her surname from Didriksen to Didrikson. Didrikson moved with her family to Beaumont, Texas, at age four, residing at 850 Doucette. She claimed to have acquired the nickname "Babe" (after Babe Ruth) upon hitting five home runs in a childhood baseball game. In reality, her Norwegian mother had called her "Bebe" from the time she was a toddler.
Though best known for her athletic gifts, Didrikson had many talents and was a competitor in even the most domestic of occupations: sewing. An excellent seamstress, she made many of the clothes she wore, including her golfing outfits. She claimed to have won the sewing championship at the 1931 State Fair of Texas in Dallas, but in reality won the South Texas State Fair in Beaumont, embellishing the story many years later in 1953. She attended Beaumont High School. Never a strong student, she had been forced to repeat the eighth grade and was a year older than her classmates. She eventually dropped out without graduating after she moved to Dallas to play basketball. She was a singer and a harmonica player. She recorded several songs on the Mercury Records label. Barbora Špotáková (Czech pronunciation: [ˈbarbora ˈʃpotaːkovaː]) (born 30 June 1981 in Jablonec nad Nisou) is a Czech javelin thrower. She is the current Olympic champion, as well as the world record holder.
Špotáková was an All-American at the University of Minnesota and won the silver medal at the 2006 European Championships in Gothenburg.
Špotáková improved the Czech national record (previously 66.21 m held by herself since 2006) twice in the final of the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. She took an early lead for 66.40 m in the first attempt and secured the gold medal in the third attempt (67.07 m) before German Christina Obergföll (66.46 m). Špotáková became the seventh woman in the world reaching 67 m mark. Most importantly, she became the Olympic winner in 2008 with her last throw, 71.42 m, which then was the new European record.
At the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final on 13 September 2008, Špotáková broke the world record in the first round to win the competition with a throw of 72.28 m.

Charlotte MacGibbon
Charlotte Cecilia MacGibbon-Weeks (born 27 September 1924) is a former Australian athlete who competed in the javelin.
In 1940, MacGibbon won her first national title in the javelin aged just 15. In total, she won six national championships between 1940 and 1952, including the Discus on two occasions.
At the 1950 British Empire Games she became the first Australian athlete to win an international throwing event, taking the javelin with a distance 38.84m.

Christine Ohuruogu
Christine Ijeoma Ohuruogu MBE (born 17 May 1984) is a British athlete, who specialises in the 400 metres; the event for which she is the current Olympic and former World and Commonwealth Champion. Her victory in the Beijing Games was the 50th gold medal for Great Britain in Athletics at the Olympics.

Dana Zátopková
Dana Zátopková (Czech pronunciation: [ˈdana ˈzaːtopkovaː]; née Ingrová [ˈɪŋɡrovaː], born in Karviná-Fryštát, September 19, 1922) was a Czech javelin thrower. She won the gold medal for javelin in the 1952 Summer Olympics (only an hour after her husband, Emil Zátopek, won the 5000 m), and the silver medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics. She was the European champion in 1954 and 1958. She also set a world record in 1958 (55.73 m) when she was 35, making her the oldest woman to break one in an outdoor athletics event.
The couple were well known for their public banter. Once, when Emil attempted to take some credit for his wife's Olympic victory at her press conference, claiming that it was his victory in the 5 km run that had "inspired" her, she tartly responded, "Really? Okay, go inspire some other girl and see if she throws a javelin fifty meters!!"
Dana and Emil were the witnesses at the wedding ceremoney of Olympic gold medalists Olga Fikotová and Harold Connolly in Prague in 1957. Emil spoke to the Czechoslovak president Antonín Zápotocký to request help in Olga getting a permit to marry Connolly. While it's not clear how much this helped, they surprisingly received a permit a few days later.

Fatima Whitbread MBE (born Fatima Vedad; 3 March 1961) is a British former javelin thrower and multiple medal-winner.
Fatima Vedad was born in Stoke Newington, London, to a Turkish Cypriot mother and Greek Cypriot father. She grew up in a series of children's homes, occasionally being left in the care of her abusive biological mother. In a 2003 interview with the Observer, Whitbread said, "It was a nightmare of a childhood and it was only because I loved sport so much that I got through it and met my true mother."
At the age of 14 she was adopted by the Whitbread family and spent her teenage years in Chadwell St Mary, Essex. Margaret Whitbread, her javelin coach, had offered to take her in when she realised that Fatima was spending a lot of time with her family. She attended Dilkes County Primary School and the Culverhouse Secondary School (now the Ockendon Academy), both in South Ockendon, Essex, then Torrells School, Grays following her adoption.
She broke the javelin world record with a throw of 77.44m in the qualifying round of the 1986 European Championships in Athletics (where she also won the final) and became World Champion in 1987. She became well known in the UK for her celebratory wiggle after defeating arch-rival Petra Felke in these events. Her performances in 1987 led to her being voted winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Inese Jaunzeme (21 May 1932 – 13 February 2011) was a Latvian athlete who competed mainly in the javelin throw.
Born in Pļaviņas, she trained with the Dynamo club in Riga. Jaunzeme was third in the javelin at the USSR Championships in 1956, earning herself a place on the Olympic team for the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia. She set an Olympic record in the first round of the event and went on to improve her mark twice more, ending up with a winning throw of 53.86 metres. This made her the first Olympic gold medallist to come from Latvia. She was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1957 in recognition of her achievement.
She began training to be a doctor while still competing in the javelin and was the silver medallist at the 1957 World University Games, as well as winning at the championships organised by the International Union of Students (UIE). She became a qualified doctor in 1960 and went on to perform in the fields of traumatology and plastic surgery. Jaunzeme was also a Candidate of Medical Science, having defended her dissertation in 1969.

Dame Kelly Holmes, DBE, MBE(Mil.) (born 19 April 1970) is a retired British middle distance athlete. She specialised in the 800 metres and 1500 metres events and won a gold medal for both distances at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Lia Manoliu
Lia Manoliu (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈli.a manoˈli.u]; April 25, 1932 in Chişinău, now Republic of Moldova – January 9, 1998 in Bucharest) was a Romanian discus thrower who won three Olympic medals, including one gold. She was the first Track & Field athlete to compete at six Olympics.
Lia started her Olympic career at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, where she finished 6th with a throw of 42.64m.
She bettered this distance at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, throwing 43.90m for a ninth place finish. At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, she held the lead after the first round with a throw of 52.36m, and although she was unable to improve upon this in subsequent rounds, the throw was sufficient to earn her the bronze medal. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Manoliu was lying in fourth place after round four, but she produced a throw of 56.96m on her fifth attempt to gain her second Olympic bronze medal.
In the winter of 1967–68, the Romanian Athletics Federation informed the 35 year-old Manoliu that she was too old to try for the Olympics again and that she need not bother turning out for their training camp sessions. This only served to increase Manoliu's determination, and after months of hard and lonely training, she qualified for the Romanian team to the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. In Mexico, she carried an injury to her throwing arm sustained in a shot-putting accident into the competition, and the team doctor warned her that it was good for only one good throw. One throw was all Manoliu needed, registering a distance of 58.28m on her first attempt, which proved good enough for the gold medal.

Mary Denise Rand, MBE, (née Bignal) (born 10 February 1940) is a former English track-and-field athlete. She won the gold medal in the long jump at the 1964 Summer Olympics by breaking the world record, becoming the first-ever British female to win an Olympic gold medal in a track and field event.
She is the daughter of Eric and Hilda Bignal. She was born and grew up in Wells, Somerset, England. At the age of 16, Millfield School offered her an athletics scholarship. She excelled in all sports and won All-England Schools' titles. She was outstanding at high jump, long jump and hurdles. In 1956, she was invited as a guest of the Olympic squad at a training camp in Brighton, where she beat Britain's best high jumpers.
At the age of 17, Rand set a British national record of 4046 points in the pentathlon. She won a silver medal in the 1958 Commonwealth Games long jump and came fifth in the high jump. One month later she came seventh in the European pentathlon championships.
In the 1960 Olympics in Rome, she set a British record of 6.33m in the qualifying round of the long jump, which if repeated, would have won her a silver in the final. In the final she fouled two of the three jumps and finished ninth. She also finished fourth in the 80m hurdles. She won a bronze medal in the European Championship long jump in 1962.

Osleidys Menéndez Sáez (born November 14, 1979 in Martí) is a Cuban athlete competing in the javelin throw. She is a former Olympic champion, world champion, and world record holder. She has been described as the female "Jan Železný" of her times.

Petra Felke
Petra Meier, née Felke (born 30 July 1959, Saalfeld/Saale, Thuringia) is a former German track and field athlete and Olympic champion who represented East Germany.
She trained with Ruth Fuchs at the Motor Jena sport club. As the sport career of Fuchs came to an end, Felke took over the lead in the javelin throw. Her first top finish in the East German athletic championship came in 1978 when she took 3rd place, a result she also achieved in 1981. In 1982 and 1983 she was second and from 1984 through 1989 she won the gold medal.
On 9 September 1988 she became the first woman to ever throw the javelin further than 80 metres. Strictly speaking, this world record throw was measured at 80.00m exactly. However, the rules in force at the time dictated that measurements had to be rounded down to the nearest 2 cm, so it is almost certain that the throw was indeed further than 80 metres.
Her first world record had come on 4 June 1985 in Schwerin when she threw 75.26 meters, a result that she beat later that same day with a throw of 75.40 meters. Her next world record came on 29 July 1987 in Leipzig when she threw 78.90 meters. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul she won the gold medal in front of silver medalist Fatima Whitbread of Britain and bronze medalist Beate Koch of (East) Germany. At the height of her career she was 1.72 metres (5 ft 8 in) tall and weighed 64 kilograms.

Petra Rivers
Petra Rivers (born 11 December 1952) is a retired Australian athlete who specialised in the javelin throw.
At the 1970 National Championships, she won both the Open and Junior javelin titles. Although still only seventeen, it was her fourth national junior javelin championship win. Her performances earned her a place in the Australian team for the 1970 Commonwealth Games and she comfortably won the gold medal in Edinburgh.
In late 1971, she threw Australian and World Junior records of 61.76 and 62.24 metres, in quick succession but injury kept her out of the 1972 national titles and Olympic Games. She recovered to repeat her Commonwealth Games gold medal win in Auckland but continuing injuries forced her retirement from the sport, at age 22, in 1975.
Four years later, Rivers returned from retirement and gained Olympic selection for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. She won the 1982 national championships with a huge national record throw of 69.28 metres and took the silver medal at the Brisbane Commonwealth Games behind team-mate Sue Howland.

Robina Higgins
Robina Higgins-Haight (28 April 1915 – 31 December 1990) was one of Canada's best female athletes in the 1930s.
From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Higgins excelled in the javelin, shot put, and ball throw competition. In the javelin, she set a Canadian record throw of 131 feet, 11.75 inches (40.23 m) in 1938. This mark stood until 1952. In a 1935 ball throw event, she set a record of 222 feet, 2 inches (67.72 m), a distance that was unsurpassed until 1947.
During her brief career, Higgins won nine national titles and was given the Velma Springstead Trophy as the country’s outstanding female athlete in 1937. In addition to three titles in javelin and ball throw, two in shot put, and one in discus, during national and abbreviated Canadian competition, Higgins also won the gold medal in the javelin event at the 1938 British Empire Games in Sydney, Australia. She died in Winnipeg on 31 December 1990.

Ruth Fuchs, née Gamm (born December 14, 1946 in Egeln, Saxony-Anhalt) is a German politician and former athlete. Sally Gunnell
Sally Jane Janet Gunnell OBE (born 29 July 1966 in Chigwell, Essex, England) is a former British Olympic champion in the 400 m hurdles. She has also worked as a television presenter predominantly for the BBC until January 2006.
She attended the West Hatch High School on High Road in Chigwell.
Gunnell started out in athletics with the Essex Ladies club as an accomplished long jumper and pentathlete, before turning to the sprints and hurdling.
Gunnell won the 400 m hurdles at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. She set the world record in the same event when she won gold in the 1993 World Championships. This record was broken by Kim Batten in 1995, but is still the UK record. Her defence of her Olympic title in Atlanta in 1996 was cut short, as she pulled up in one of her races, injured. This seemed a particularly cruel blow, as this race occurred on her 30th birthday.
In 1996, Gunnell worked as a Red Cross ambassador in Angola. In September 1997, she retired after a recurrence of an achilles tendon injury.

Silke Renk (born June 30, 1967 in Querfurt, Saxony-Anhalt) is a retired javelin thrower from Germany.
She represented East Germany at the 1988 Summer Olympics, where she finished fifth, and at the 1990 European Championships where she finished fourth.

Sunette Stella Viljoen (born 6 October 1983) is a South African javelin thrower, who has won gold at the Commonwealth Games and African Championships. She also made one Women's Test cricket and 17 Women's One Day International appearances for South Africa between 2000 and 2002.
She won gold at the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade, throwing 62.52 metres. At the qualifying round she set a new African record 65.46 metres, eclipsing her compatriot Justine Robbeson's record 63.49m achieved in Potchefstroom in February 2008. Viljoen's throw was over three meters further than her previous PB of 62.24 m achieved also at the February 2008 meeting in Potchefstroom. On June 14, 2010 she broke her own record with 66.38 m at the Josef Odložil Memorial in Prague.
She went on to win bronze at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, Korea on 2 September 2011. With a throw of 68.38m, she also set a new African Record.

Theresa Ione "Tessa" Sanderson, CBE (born 14 March 1956) is a former British javelin thrower and heptathlete who competed in the javelin competition in every one of the six Olympics from 1976–1996 winning the Gold medal in 1984. She is the second track and field athlete, after Lia Manoliu (discus), to compete at six Olympics.
Sanderson was born in St Elizabeth, Jamaica of Ghanaian ancestry, she later emigrated to Wolverhampton, England.
Sanderson was the UK's leading javelin thrower from the mid-1970s, winning silver in the 1978 European championships and gold in the Commonwealth Games three times (1978, 1986, 1990), but was eclipsed during the 1980s by the up-and-coming Fatima Whitbread, with whom she shared a long standing rivalry.
When Sanderson won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in the javelin, becoming the first British black woman ever to win Olympic gold, her victory was quite unexpected. In the end, her career outlasted Whitbread's, and she competed at senior international level until 1996.

Tilly Fleischer
Ottilie ("Tilly") Fleischer (October 2, 1911 in Frankfurt am Main – July 14, 2005 in Lahr, Schwarzwald) was a German athlete who excelled in track and field.
She competed for Germany in the 1932 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles, United States in the Javelin where she won the bronze medal and fourth in the discus. Four years later in her home country she won the javelin at the 1936 Summer Games in front of the Berlin crowds. A versatile athlete, she broke the record for women's shot put (then a non-Olympic event) in 1929, and again in 1930.

Trine Hattestad
Trine Hattestad (née Elsa Katrine Solberg) is a former Norwegian javelin thrower. She was born on 18 April 1966 in Lørenskog, Norway.
Hattestad made her international debut at the European Junior Championships in 1981 with a fifth place. The follow year she also competed in the European Championships for seniors. At the beginning of the 1990s, Hattestad could measure with the world top. In 1993, she won her first major international title, the World Championships in Stuttgart as well as the IAAF Golden Four. To that, she added the 1994 European title. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, she won the bronze medal. The following year, she regained the World Championships. At the 1999 World Championships, she lost the title again, finishing third, but in 2000 she won the only title missing in her career with a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney.
During her career, Hattestad took the world record three times. In her youth, she was also a promising handball player in her country, playing for a club in the second league of the Norwegian league system.

Theresa Ione "Tessa" Sanderson, CBE (born 14 March 1956) is a former British javelin thrower and heptathlete who competed in the javelin competition in every one of the six Olympics from 1976–1996 winning the Gold medal in 1984. She is the second track and field athlete, after Lia Manoliu (discus), to compete at six Olympics. [1]

Early life[link]
Sanderson was born in St Elizabeth, Jamaica of Ghanaian ancestry, she later emigrated to Wolverhampton, England.
Athletics career[link]
Sanderson was the UK's leading javelin thrower from the mid-1970s, winning silver in the 1978 European championships and gold in the Commonwealth Games three times (1978, 1986, 1990), but was eclipsed during the 1980s by the up-and-coming Fatima Whitbread, with whom she shared a long standing rivalry.
When Sanderson won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in the javelin, becoming the first British black woman ever to win Olympic gold, her victory was quite unexpected. In the end, her career outlasted Whitbread's, and she competed at senior international level until 1996.
Sports administration[link]
Sanderson served as Vice-Chairman of Sport England from 1999 to 2005.
She is helping to run an academy in Newham, London that finds and helps train athletes to represent Britain in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
In September 2009 Tessa registered her own Charity sports academy carrying on her work alongside the established Newham Sports Academy. The name of the Charity is the Tessa Sanderson Foundation and Academy. The charity is helping Tessa to work on a wider bases to help other youngsters who are disabled and non disabled achieve their goals and creating a pathway and more opportunities not just in Newham but the wider areas of London and with a vision of a national roll out.[2]
In April 2009 Tessa again because of her work in the community made history again by organising the first 10K road run to run through the Olympic Park offering the community and other visitors to Newham the Host Borough of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games a fantastic birds eye view of the Olympic 2012 athletics stadium. The Newham Classic 10K[3] was so successful that it takes place annually and has led to other active running events for anyone such as the City of London West Ham Park Runs which takes place most Sunday mornings in West Ham Park in the East End of London.
Tessa was been appointed as a Board member of the Olympic Park Legacy Company chaired by Baroness Ford to oversee and help with the formation of the Olympic Park for the Newham community and people living in the East End of London.[4]
Tessa organised and was associated with the Redbridge 10k on 24 July 2011, which was the first ever run in the Borough of Redbridge.

In 1988, Sanderson made an appearance on Bullseye. In 2005, she took part in the one-off special, Strictly African Dancing, as part of the Africa Lives season on the BBC. She was voted into third place by the viewers.
Honours[link]
Sanderson was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 1985 New Year's Honours, following her Olympic gold, raised to Officer (OBE) in the 1998 New Year's Honours for her charity work, and to Commander (CBE) in the 2004 New Year's Honours for her services to Sport England.
There is a housing estate named after her in her adopted home town of Wednesfield, Sanderson Park. It is located on the playing fields of her former school, Wards Bridge High School.

On 1 May 2010, Tessa married Densign White, former Olympic Judo player at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.[5]
