A new dawn in Turkana, Kenya
Turkana District in Kenya is a region that is predominantly arid frequented by severe drought throughout the year.The region is vast, with a difficult terrain and inhabited by a pastoral nomadic community whose livelihoods heavily depend on livestock keeping. The scarcity of food in the region for years is alarming and prospects for the rest of the year are grim. The issues of land have perennially tormented peace and security in this area. But World Vision Kenya come in to assist this community to realize their dream. They have trained farmers in Juruk irrigation scheme and also supported them with seeds hence brought hope to the community.

Turkana drought
The government in conjunction with UNICEF has embarked on a 160 million shillings projects aimed at enhancing access to clean water supply in Turkana. The project is expected to benefit 70 villages and 45 schools in the greater Turkana district. Water minister Charity Ngilu, who toured the projects in Turkana, said that once completed the multi-million projects will also enable the locals engage in irrigational activities for food production.

Kakuma refugee camp, one the largest refugee camps in North Eastern Kenya located in Turkana District was established in 1992 to serve refugees from Somalia, Ethiopia among other countries.According to UNHCR, the camp population stands at 61285 refugees. UNHCR in collaboration with the international organisation for migration started relocating refugees from the Dadaab camps to kakuma. This was part of a plan to alleviate overcrowding in dadaab camp.

Tension is mounting between the Kenyan security forces and a militia group in the Kenya Sudan border, due to an opposed establishment of a Kenyan border position in the area, the effects of the clash is spilling over to other areas. More than 300 hundred people are homeless following a wave of war and instability that is dotting Loima area in Turkana district. Herds of cattle have been stolen in Loima and one person killed. Residents are now migrating their homes in search of refuge in Turkwel and other neighboring areas.

The United Kingdom has pledged 17.5 billion shillings in emergency aid to help drought victims in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia. The news comes just in time with a report released yesterday predicting that as many as 3.5 million people in Kenya alone will be in need of food aid in the next few months. Wajir district and the greater Turkana region are among the worst hit areas. Kenya Red Cross statistics show that about 800000 people in the Turkana region are dependent on donors.
