Babylon (1980)
Babylon - A Film by Franco Rosso A really hard-to-find in the US, awesome reggae movie from the UK that stars Reggae Band, Aswad's, Original Lead Vocalist, Brinsley Forde as Blue. Featuring Music By: Aswad, Dennis Bovell, Cassandra, Michael Prophet, I Roy, Yabby U!!! About the Movie: Sound system 'toaster' Blue and his Ital Lion crew are looking forward to a sound clash competition with rival outfit Jah Shaka. But as the event approaches, Blue's personal life begins to unravel. Fired from his job, he beings to suspect his girlfriend is cheating on him and then one night he is brutally beaten by plain-clothes policemen. Finally, when their lock-up garage is broken into and their sound system destroyed, he cannot take any more. Increasingly angered and alienated by what he perceives to be society's rejection of his race and his culture, Blue is compelled to respond by fighting fire with fire. Directed by Franco Russo, co-written by Martin Stellman (Quadrophenia), and photographed by two-time Oscar winner Chris Menges (The Mission; The Killing Fields). Fully restored and re-mastered to it's former glory! FAIR USE NOTICE This video may contain some copyrighted material not specifically authorized by the copyright owner. Babylon (1980) - Engagement Party scene
This is one of my favourite scenes from the the British movie called Babylon. It provides some comic relief in the middle of an otherwise intense and brooding film. Here "Loverboy" (played by Victor Romero Evans) reluctantly attends his own engagement party where he fails to impress his soon-to-be father in law. The Lover's Rock track playing at the end is by Cassandra and is called Thank You For The Many Things You've Done. I was a barely out of nappies when Babylon was released, but I learned about in my teens by which time, it had developed a reputation as a cult classic. It used to be really hard to find. I bought a VHS copy from a stall in the Bull Ring in Birmingham in the nineties. But the copy was terrible and it just wouldn't play the last half hour of the film (that's what life was like back then in the pre-DVD age). I had to wait years until it was finally released on DVD a couple of years ago. Babylon depicts life for Black Youth at the turn of the 1980s. It mainly focuses on Blue (played by Brinsley Forde) who is trying desperately to make something of himself in the face of all kinds of pressures. His main source of stability and belonging come from his soundsystem - Ital Lion. The film hightlights themes of generational conflict, racism and urban decay - all against a musical backdrop of some sublime Reggae & Dub. Probably the best thing about the film is the score, provided by Dennis Bovell and featuring musicianship from members of the (still) mighty ...

Babylon Warriors-REGGAE LIVES-Hollywood Skating Rink 1980
Belizean Reggae Group, Babylon Warriors, had became part of a corner stone of - The Los Angeles Reggae Archives. Formed in 1978 by Patrick Barrow (rhythm guitarist) for the group, other members included: Jah Lem (bass guitar) Manny Good (drums) Calbert Buckner (keyboards) Lewis Sampson (lead vocal) Jessie Easter (lead guitar) -- Music Connection, Los Angeles, California--- Summary: Good reggae, to me, is like the tide of a quiet surf. The waves seem smooth, supple, but they come in tirelessly. The Babylon Warriors reggae has the same effect, thanks to a silky dancing beat and pop melodies that refuse to become redundant. ---Jeff Silberman REGGAE LIVES, Published: Belmopan Music, BMI www.babylonwarriors.com www.cayerecords.com
