Chronic Renal Failure
Chronic Renal Failure or Chronic Kidney Disease is a gradual continuous functional failure of kidneys over a number of months or years. It is mainly caused due to the complication of a serious medical condition, but the fall in renal activity is so gradual that until complete kidney failure, almost no symptoms are seen.
Kidneys are equipped with millions of nephrons that continuously filter out and remove waste products and extra fluid from the blood and discharge them as urine. If a nephron is damaged, it cannot function anymore, and so the functioning nephrons carry out all the filtering process. But when the number of damaged nephrons are higher than a normal number, the remaining filters cannot take all the work load; which results into the accumulation of waste products in turn leads to further serious irreversible complications.
Kidney damage is measured through Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is calculated by a doctor considering factors such as blood creatinine test result, age, gender, weight and body size. Based on the degree of the damage, there are five stages of Chronic Renal

Chronic Kidney Disease Stages
Chronic kidney disease stages define the progression of a serious and potentially life-threatening kidney problem: chronic kidney disease of CKD. Chronic kidney disease stages range from Stage 1 to Stage 5: the higher the number of the stage, the greater the progression of the disease.
Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition that develops over an extended period of time. It can be decades before symptoms begin to present themselves.
By the time symptoms are noticeable, a large percentage of kidney tissue may have been destroyed. There are many possible reasons behind this damage.
Chronic kidney diseases stages are useful diagnostic tools for doctors, who can treat patients based on the stage their kidney disease has reached. Doctors use a measurement called the GFR to determine how efficiently your kidneys are functioning. GFR is an important factor in determining chronic kidney disease stages.
Stage 1 - Damage at this stage is regarded as "mild." A GFR of 90-100 is typical. At Stage 1, you won't even know there's a problem and it's likely there will be no symptoms.
Stage 2 - Filtration rate is lower, ranging from approximately 60 to 89. You probably still won't have any symptoms, but kidney function tests would begin to detect abnormal protein levels in the urine.
Most people don't pay much attention to the texture of their urine, but when there's more protein than normal, it will sometimes look foamy. Foamy urine is a good reason to talk to your doctor.
Stage 3 - When chronic kidney disease has reached this stage, you may notice changes in the pattern of urination. You may find you have to get up at night more often. A certain level of fatigue and weakness may begin to appear.
Some occasional cramping, dry skin and generalized itchiness may occur. Tests might show that you have anemia. A GFR test will give you a reading between 30 and 59 at Stage 3.
Stage 4 - Fluids begin to accumulate because chronic kidney disease has lowered the ability of the kidneys to perform their normal filtering functions. Symptoms become more numerous and prominent.
You'll need the help of a nutritionist with your diet, limiting your phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. Urinary output will decrease and you'll feel generally unwell.
Your doctor will start to talk to you about the possibility of kidney dialysis. GFR will read between 15 and 29. Kidney function has been seriously compromised by this time.
Stage 5 - This stage is critical and kidney failure is imminent if it hasn't already occurred. Symptoms of chronic kidney disease are obvious and may include nausea, vomiting, noticeable swelling and bloating, and almost no urine production.
At Stage 5, the kidneys have basically stopped working and you'll either need kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.
Chronic kidney disease is often discovered by accident because your doctor is treating you for some other disorder. Individuals with hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes are more prone to develop chronic kidney disease more often than those who don't have these conditions. So your doctor may want to run kidney function tests if you have hypertension or diabetes.
There are also certain risk factors connected to chronic kidney disease. If you smoke, are obese, or are over 65 years old, your chances of developing chronic kidney disease are higher.
CKD is also more prevalent in certain demographic groups, especially African-Americans, American Indians or Asian-Americans. Finally, you should be vigilant if you have a family history of kidney problems.
When CKD is diagnosed in the early stages (mainly Stages 1 and 2), the progress of the disease can be slowed with medications and lifestyle changes. In many cases, however, it's impossible to reverse significant damage to kidney tissue that has already taken place.

* Fatigue : Fatigue is another common symptom. The reason it occurs is the kidneys' inability to produce erythropoietin. When erythropoietin is not produced in appropriate quantity, it causes a dearth in the number of oxygen carrying red blood cells. This causes the brain and the muscles to suffer quick exhaustion thus, resulting in extreme fatigue. The low count of red blood cells may result in anemia, and this may cause the affected person to feel cold even in a warm weather. Not only this, anemia may further result in bouts of other problems, such as memory loss, trouble with concentration and dizziness.
* Itching and Nausea : Kidney disease hinders the function of the organ to remove wastes from the bloodstream. This results in the accumulation of wastes, which becomes evident with the occurrence of severe itching or in some cases, skin rashes. This build up of wastes in the blood may also lead to nausea or vomiting.
* Swelling : One of the important functions which the kidneys do for the body, is getting rid of excess fluid. So, it is certain that an unhealthy kidney system becomes inefficient to remove this excess fluid, and allows it to get accumulated. This results in symptoms such as swelling in the legs, feet, face, hands and ankles.
* Pain : It is common to hear patients complain against pain in the back, or side where the affected kidney is located. Some kidney diseases might result in the formation of cysts filled with fluid in the kidneys or the liver, and these trigger the pain.
* Breathing Problems and Bad Breath : The extra fluid which the kidney is unable to get rid of, can get accumulated in the lungs. This may cause shortness of breath. This may also be caused due to anemia, which may leave the body to starve for enough oxygen.
* People often complain against having a metallic taste in mouth, when they are suffering from any kidney disease. They also suffer from bad breath. These occur due to the build up of wastes in the blood.
Dialysis is a procedure that is recommended for people affected by kidney failure. The two commonly forms of dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In hemodialysis, the process of cleansing of the blood is done by a special filter called a dialyzer. During this kidney dialysis process, the blood is routed through tubes into the dialyzer, which sifts out wastes, extra salt, and extra water. The clean blood is returned to the body through another set of tubes. The other technique called peritoneal dialysis, involves the use of body's own tissue cells within the abdominal cavity to filter the blood. A special fluid is inserted into the abdominal cavity via a plastic tube called a catheter. The fluid moves around the intestines, and the intestinal walls act as a filter between this fluid and the bloodstream. This fluid helps in the removal of waste products and excess water from the body.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), also known as chronic renal disease, is progressive loss in kidney function over a period of months or years. Kidney disease, also known as nephropathy or renal disease, is damage to or disease of a kidney. Nephritis is inflammatory kidney disease. Nephrosis is noninflammatory nephropathy. Kidney disease usually causes kidney failure (renal failure) to more or less degree, with the amount depending on the type of disease. In precise usage, disease denotes the structural and etiologic disease entity whereas failure denotes the dysfunction (lack of working well, that is, impaired renal function); but in common usage these meanings overlap; for example, the terms chronic kidney disease and chronic renal failure are usually considered synonymous. Acute kidney disease has often been called acute renal failure, although nephrologists now often tend to call it acute kidney injury.
Causes
Causes of kidney disease include deposition of the IgA antibodies in the glomerulus, administration of analgesics, xanthine oxidase deficiency, toxicity of chemotherapy agents, and long-term exposure to lead or its salts. Chronic conditions that can produce nephropathy include systemic lupus erythematosus, diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure (hypertension), which lead to diabetic nephropathy and hypertensive nephropathy, respectively.

Renal failure
Renal failure, also known as kidney failure or renal insufficiency, is a medical condition in which the kidneys fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood. The two main forms are acute kidney injury, which is often reversible with adequate treatment, and chronic kidney disease, which is often not reversible. In both cases, there is usually an underlying cause.
Kidney failure is mainly determined by a decrease in glomerular filtration rate, which is the rate at which blood is filtered in the glomeruli of the kidney. The condition is detected by a decrease in or absence of urine production or determination of waste products (creatinine or urea) in the blood. A certain level of fatigue and weakness may begin to appear. Some occasional cramping, dry skin and generalized itchiness may occur. Tests might show that you have anemia. A GFR test will give you a reading between 30 and 59 at Stage 3. Stage 4 - Fluids begin to accumulate because chronic kidney disease has lowered the ability of the kidneys to perform their normal filtering functions. Symptoms become more numerous and prominent. You'll need the help of a nutritionist with your diet, limiting your phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. Urinary output will decrease and you'll feel generally unwell. Your doctor will start to talk to you about the possibility of kidney dialysis. GFR will read between 15 and 29. Kidney function has been seriously compromised by this time. Stage 5 - This stage is critical and kidney failure is imminent if it hasn't already occurred. Symptoms of chronic kidney disease are obvious and may include nausea, vomiting, noticeable swelling and bloating, and almost no urine production. At Stage 5, the kidneys have basically stopped working and you'll either need kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive. Chronic kidney disease is often discovered by accident because your doctor is treating you for some other disorder. Individuals with hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes are more prone to develop chronic kidney disease more often than those who don't have these conditions. So your doctor may want to run kidney function tests if you have hypertension or diabetes. There are also certain risk factors connected to chronic kidney disease. If you smoke, are obese, or are over 65 years old, your chances of developing chronic kidney disease are higher. CKD is also more prevalent in certain demographic groups, especially African-Americans, American Indians or Asian-Americans. Finally, you should be vigilant if you have a family history of kidney problems. When CKD is diagnosed in the early stages (mainly Stages 1 and 2), the progress of the disease can be slowed with medications and lifestyle changes. In many cases, however, it's impossible to reverse significant damage to kidney tissue that has already taken place. -

When erythropoietin is not produced in appropriate quantity, it causes a dearth in the number of oxygen carrying red blood cells. This causes the brain and the muscles to suffer quick exhaustion thus, resulting in extreme fatigue. The low count of red blood cells may result in anemia, and this may cause the affected person to feel cold even in a warm weather. Not only this, anemia may further result in bouts of other problems, such as memory loss, trouble with concentration and dizziness. * Itching and Nausea : Kidney disease hinders the function of the organ to remove wastes from the bloodstream. This results in the accumulation of wastes, which becomes evident with the occurrence of severe itching or in some cases, skin rashes. This build up of wastes in the blood may also lead to nausea or vomiting. * Swelling : One of the important functions which the kidneys do for the body, is getting rid of excess fluid. So, it is certain that an unhealthy kidney system becomes inefficient to remove this excess fluid, and allows it to get accumulated. This results in symptoms such as swelling in the legs, feet, face, hands and ankles. * Pain : It is common to hear patients complain against pain in the back, or side where the affected kidney is located. Some kidney diseases might result in the formation of cysts filled with fluid in the kidneys or the liver, and these trigger the pain. * Breathing Problems and Bad Breath : The extra fluid which the kidney is unable to get rid of, can get accumulated in the lungs. This may cause shortness of breath. This may also be caused due to anemia, which may leave the body to starve for enough oxygen. * People often complain against having a metallic taste in mouth, when they are suffering from any kidney disease. They also suffer from bad breath. These occur due to the build up of wastes in the blood. Dialysis is a procedure that is recommended for people affected by kidney failure. The two commonly forms of dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In hemodialysis, the process of cleansing of the blood is done by a special filter called a dialyzer. During this kidney dialysis process, the blood is routed through tubes into the dialyzer, which sifts out wastes, extra salt, and extra water. The clean blood is returned to the body through another set of tubes. The other technique called peritoneal dialysis, involves the use of body's own tissue cells within the abdominal cavity to filter the blood. A special fluid is inserted into the abdominal cavity via a plastic tube called a catheter. The fluid moves around the intestines, and the intestinal walls act as a filter between this fluid and the bloodstream. Chronic Renal Failure
Chronic Renal Failure or Chronic Kidney Disease is a gradual continuous functional failure of kidneys over a number of months or years. It is mainly caused due to the complication of a serious medical condition, but the fall in renal activity is so gradual that until complete kidney failure, almost no symptoms are seen.
Kidneys are equipped with millions of nephrons that continuously filter out and remove waste products and extra fluid from the blood and discharge them as urine. If a nephron is damaged, it cannot function anymore, and so the functioning nephrons carry out all the filtering process. But when the number of damaged nephrons are higher than a normal number, the remaining filters cannot take all the work load; which results into the accumulation of waste products in turn leads to further serious irreversible complications.
Kidney damage is measured through Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is calculated by a doctor considering factors such as blood creatinine test result, age, gender, weight and body size. Based on the degree of the damage, there are five stages of Chronic Renal

Chronic Kidney Disease Stages
Chronic kidney disease stages define the progression of a serious and potentially life-threatening kidney problem: chronic kidney disease of CKD. Chronic kidney disease stages range from Stage 1 to Stage 5: the higher the number of the stage, the greater the progression of the disease.
Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition that develops over an extended period of time. It can be decades before symptoms begin to present themselves.
By the time symptoms are noticeable, a large percentage of kidney tissue may have been destroyed. There are many possible reasons behind this damage.
Chronic kidney diseases stages are useful diagnostic tools for doctors, who can treat patients based on the stage their kidney disease has reached. Doctors use a measurement called the GFR to determine how efficiently your kidneys are functioning. GFR is an important factor in determining chronic kidney disease stages.
Stage 1 - Damage at this stage is regarded as "mild." A GFR of 90-100 is typical. At Stage 1, you won't even know there's a problem and it's likely there will be no symptoms.
Stage 2 - Filtration rate is lower, ranging from approximately 60 to 89. You probably still won't have any symptoms, but kidney function tests would begin to detect abnormal protein levels in the urine.
Most people don't pay much attention to the texture of their urine, but when there's more protein than normal, it will sometimes look foamy. Foamy urine is a good reason to talk to your doctor.
Stage 3 - When chronic kidney disease has reached this stage, you may notice changes in the pattern of urination. You may find you have to get up at night more often. A certain level of fatigue and weakness may begin to appear.

Chronic Kidney Disease Stages
Chronic kidney disease stages define the progression of a serious and potentially life-threatening kidney problem: chronic kidney disease of CKD. Chronic kidney disease stages range from Stage 1 to Stage 5: the higher the number of the stage, the greater the progression of the disease.
Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition that develops over an extended period of time. It can be decades before symptoms begin to present themselves.
By the time symptoms are noticeable, a large percentage of kidney tissue may have been destroyed. There are many possible reasons behind this damage.
Chronic kidney diseases stages are useful diagnostic tools for doctors, who can treat patients based on the stage their kidney disease has reached. Doctors use a measurement called the GFR to determine how efficiently your kidneys are functioning. GFR is an important factor in determining chronic kidney disease stages.
Stage 1 - Damage at this stage is regarded as "mild." A GFR of 90-100 is typical. At Stage 1, you won't even know there's a problem and it's likely there will be no symptoms.
Stage 2 - Filtration rate is lower, ranging from approximately 60 to 89. You probably still won't have any symptoms, but kidney function tests would begin to detect abnormal protein levels in the urine.
Most people don't pay much attention to the texture of their urine, but when there's more protein than normal, it will sometimes look foamy. Foamy urine is a good reason to talk to your doctor.
Stage 3 - When chronic kidney disease has reached this stage, you may notice changes in the pattern of urination. You may find you have to get up at night more often. A certain level of fatigue and weakness may begin to appear.
Some occasional cramping, dry skin and generalized itchiness may occur. Tests might show that you have anemia. A GFR test will give you a reading between 30 and 59 at Stage 3.
Stage 4 - Fluids begin to accumulate because chronic kidney disease has lowered the ability of the kidneys to perform their normal filtering functions. Symptoms become more numerous and prominent.
You'll need the help of a nutritionist with your diet, limiting your phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. Urinary output will decrease and you'll feel generally unwell.
Your doctor will start to talk to you about the possibility of kidney dialysis. GFR will read between 15 and 29. Kidney function has been seriously compromised by this time.
Stage 5 - This stage is critical and kidney failure is imminent if it hasn't already occurred. Symptoms of chronic kidney disease are obvious and may include nausea, vomiting, noticeable swelling and bloating, and almost no urine production.
At Stage 5, the kidneys have basically stopped working and you'll either need kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.
Chronic kidney disease is often discovered by accident because your doctor is treating you for some other disorder. Individuals with hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes are more prone to develop chronic kidney disease more often than those who don't have these conditions. When erythropoietin is not produced in appropriate quantity, it causes a dearth in the number of oxygen carrying red blood cells. This causes the brain and the muscles to suffer quick exhaustion thus, resulting in extreme fatigue. The low count of red blood cells may result in anemia, and this may cause the affected person to feel cold even in a warm weather. Not only this, anemia may further result in bouts of other problems, such as memory loss, trouble with concentration and dizziness.
* Itching and Nausea : Kidney disease hinders the function of the organ to remove wastes from the bloodstream. This results in the accumulation of wastes, which becomes evident with the occurrence of severe itching or in some cases, skin rashes. This build up of wastes in the blood may also lead to nausea or vomiting.
* Swelling : One of the important functions which the kidneys do for the body, is getting rid of excess fluid. So, it is certain that an unhealthy kidney system becomes inefficient to remove this excess fluid, and allows it to get accumulated. This results in symptoms such as swelling in the legs, feet, face, hands and ankles.
* Pain : It is common to hear patients complain against pain in the back, or side where the affected kidney is located. Some kidney diseases might result in the formation of cysts filled with fluid in the kidneys or the liver, and these trigger the pain.
* Breathing Problems and Bad Breath : The extra fluid which the kidney is unable to get rid of, can get accumulated in the lungs. This may cause shortness of breath. This may also be caused due to anemia, which may leave the body to starve for enough oxygen.
* People often complain against having a metallic taste in mouth, when they are suffering from any kidney disease. They also suffer from bad breath. These occur due to the build up of wastes in the blood.
Dialysis is a procedure that is recommended for people affected by kidney failure. The two commonly forms of dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In hemodialysis, the process of cleansing of the blood is done by a special filter called a dialyzer. During this kidney dialysis process, the blood is routed through tubes into the dialyzer, which sifts out wastes, extra salt, and extra water. The clean blood is returned to the body through another set of tubes. The other technique called peritoneal dialysis, involves the use of body's own tissue cells within the abdominal cavity to filter the blood. A special fluid is inserted into the abdominal cavity via a plastic tube called a catheter. The fluid moves around the intestines, and the intestinal walls act as a filter between this fluid and the bloodstream. This fluid helps in the removal of waste products and excess water from the body.

Chronic Renal Failure
Chronic Renal Failure or Chronic Kidney Disease is a gradual continuous functional failure of kidneys over a number of months or years. It is mainly caused due to the complication of a serious medical condition, but the fall in renal activity is so gradual that until complete kidney failure, almost no symptoms are seen.
Kidneys are equipped with millions of nephrons that continuously filter out and remove waste products and extra fluid from the blood and discharge them as urine. If a nephron is damaged, it cannot function anymore, and so the functioning nephrons carry out all the filtering process. But when the number of damaged nephrons are higher than a normal number, the remaining filters cannot take all the work load; which results into the accumulation of waste products in turn leads to further serious irreversible complications.
Kidney damage is measured through Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR), which is calculated by a doctor considering factors such as blood creatinine test result, age, gender, weight and body size. Based on the degree of the damage, there are five stages of Chronic Renal

Chronic Kidney Disease Stages
Chronic kidney disease stages define the progression of a serious and potentially life-threatening kidney problem: chronic kidney disease of CKD. Chronic kidney disease stages range from Stage 1 to Stage 5: the higher the number of the stage, the greater the progression of the disease.
Chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition that develops over an extended period of time. It can be decades before symptoms begin to present themselves.
By the time symptoms are noticeable, a large percentage of kidney tissue may have been destroyed. There are many possible reasons behind this damage.
Chronic kidney diseases stages are useful diagnostic tools for doctors, who can treat patients based on the stage their kidney disease has reached. Doctors use a measurement called the GFR to determine how efficiently your kidneys are functioning. GFR is an important factor in determining chronic kidney disease stages.
Stage 1 - Damage at this stage is regarded as "mild." A GFR of 90-100 is typical. At Stage 1, you won't even know there's a problem and it's likely there will be no symptoms.
Stage 2 - Filtration rate is lower, ranging from approximately 60 to 89. You probably still won't have any symptoms, but kidney function tests would begin to detect abnormal protein levels in the urine.
Most people don't pay much attention to the texture of their urine, but when there's more protein than normal, it will sometimes look foamy. Foamy urine is a good reason to talk to your doctor.
Stage 3 - When chronic kidney disease has reached this stage, you may notice changes in the pattern of urination. You may find you have to get up at night more often. A certain level of fatigue and weakness may begin to appear.
Some occasional cramping, dry skin and generalized itchiness may occur. Tests might show that you have anemia. A GFR test will give you a reading between 30 and 59 at Stage 3.
Stage 4 - Fluids begin to accumulate because chronic kidney disease has lowered the ability of the kidneys to perform their normal filtering functions. Symptoms become more numerous and prominent.
You'll need the help of a nutritionist with your diet, limiting your phosphorus, potassium, and sodium. Urinary output will decrease and you'll feel generally unwell.
Your doctor will start to talk to you about the possibility of kidney dialysis. GFR will read between 15 and 29. Kidney function has been seriously compromised by this time.
Stage 5 - This stage is critical and kidney failure is imminent if it hasn't already occurred. Symptoms of chronic kidney disease are obvious and may include nausea, vomiting, noticeable swelling and bloating, and almost no urine production.
At Stage 5, the kidneys have basically stopped working and you'll either need kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant to survive.
Chronic kidney disease is often discovered by accident because your doctor is treating you for some other disorder. Individuals with hypertension (high blood pressure) or diabetes are more prone to develop chronic kidney disease more often than those who don't have these conditions. So your doctor may want to run kidney function tests if you have hypertension or diabetes.
There are also certain risk factors connected to chronic kidney disease. If you smoke, are obese, or are over 65 years old, your chances of developing chronic kidney disease are higher.
CKD is also more prevalent in certain demographic groups, especially African-Americans, American Indians or Asian-Americans. Finally, you should be vigilant if you have a family history of kidney problems.
When CKD is diagnosed in the early stages (mainly Stages 1 and 2), the progress of the disease can be slowed with medications and lifestyle changes. In many cases, however, it's impossible to reverse significant damage to kidney tissue that has already taken place.

This causes the brain and the muscles to suffer quick exhaustion thus, resulting in extreme fatigue. The low count of red blood cells may result in anemia, and this may cause the affected person to feel cold even in a warm weather. Not only this, anemia may further result in bouts of other problems, such as memory loss, trouble with concentration and dizziness.
* Itching and Nausea : Kidney disease hinders the function of the organ to remove wastes from the bloodstream. This results in the accumulation of wastes, which becomes evident with the occurrence of severe itching or in some cases, skin rashes. This build up of wastes in the blood may also lead to nausea or vomiting.
* Swelling : One of the important functions which the kidneys do for the body, is getting rid of excess fluid. So, it is certain that an unhealthy kidney system becomes inefficient to remove this excess fluid, and allows it to get accumulated. This results in symptoms such as swelling in the legs, feet, face, hands and ankles.
* Pain : It is common to hear patients complain against pain in the back, or side where the affected kidney is located. Some kidney diseases might result in the formation of cysts filled with fluid in the kidneys or the liver, and these trigger the pain.

In hemodialysis, the process of cleansing of the blood is done by a special filter called a dialyzer. During this kidney dialysis process, the blood is routed through tubes into the dialyzer, which sifts out wastes, extra salt, and extra water. The clean blood is returned to the body through another set of tubes. The other technique called peritoneal dialysis, involves the use of body's own tissue cells within the abdominal cavity to filter the blood. A special fluid is inserted into the abdominal cavity via a plastic tube called a catheter. The fluid moves around the intestines, and the intestinal walls act as a filter between this fluid and the bloodstream.
