The Windy City from Calamity Jane (1953)
Calamity Jane (Doris Day) sings "The Windy City" to her comrades upon her return from Chicago, where she had gone to entice the actress Adelaide Adams to perform at the local theatre. It's a beautiful number that reveals both her pride for Deadwood City and its people, as well as how sheltered she has been in the comfort of her little town. Coming down from a realization of how her masculine behaviour is perceived by other people, and how other women act and behave in other places, she may also be trying make a defensive claim about who and what she is. Lyrics: I just blew in from the Windy City The Windy City is mighty purty But they ain't got what we got, no sirree They've got shacks up to seven stories Never see any Morning Glory's But a step from our doorway... We got 'em for free! They've got those minstrel shows, Purty ladies in the big chapeaux Private lawns, public parks... For the sake of civic virtue, They've got fountains there that squirt you! I just blew in from the Windy City The Windy City is mighty purty But they ain't got what we got I'm tellin' ya, boys... We got more life in Deadwood City Than in all of Illinois! On the street was a dancing fellar All dressed up in a suit of yellar And the dance that he did there Went something like this: [tap dances] You should-a seen me a-wind'er shoppin' A-wind'er shoppin' with eyes a-poppin' At the sights that you see there, yes sirree Press a bell and a moment later, Up you go in an elevator Just as fast as a ...

Black Hills of Dakota from Calamity Jane (1953)
The town heads out to the Ft. Scully Annual Ball, with Calamity Jane (Doris Day) and Wild Bill (Howard Keel) seated prominently in the head carriage and Lt. Danny Gilmartin (Philip Carey) and Katie (Allyn Ann McLerie) behind them. Wild Bill and Danny had previously drawn straws to see who would get to escort Katie; Wild Bill, as the loser, has now been forced to spend the evening with Calamity. Bitterly, in his typical cutting fashion, he critiques Calamity's attire (what he can see of it) and she puts him in his place with a slow explanation (like one would give to a child). Then, in a rare moment of agreement, they sing their pride and love for their homeland, accompanied by the rest of the cast. (An aside: When I watch this video, I always want to poke Danny in the eye and wipe that smug, arrogant smile off his face!) Lyrics: [Wild Bill:] Take me back to the black hills, The black hills of Dakota. To the beautiful Indian country that I love. [Calamity:] Lost my heart in the black hills, The black hills of Dakota, Where the pines are so high that they kiss the skies above. [Calamity, Wild Bill, Katie, and Danny:] And when I get that lonesome feeling, And I'm miles away from home, I hear the voice of the mystic mountains calling me back home. [Calamity and Wild Bill:] So take me back to the black hills, The black hills of Dakota. To the beautiful Indian country that I love. [Chorus:] Take me back to the black hills, the black hills of Dakota. To the beautiful Indian ...

Doris Day - Autumn Leaves - 1956
I came to know Doris Day and her music through my mother back in the 1950's. She loved Perry Como, Nat "King" Cole, and Doris Day. Her Columbia albums were often played in our home stereo in Cuba. Her clean, delicately textured, and melodic voice filled every room of our household. So it is with great nostalgia that I bring you this gem of a song- "Autumn Leaves". "Autumn Leaves" was originally a 1945 French song "Les Feuilles Mortes" (literally "Dead Leaves") with music by Joseph Kosma and lyrics by poet Jacques Prévert, English lyrics were written in 1947 by the American songwriter Johnny Mercer. With Mercer's exquisite lyrics the song became even more beautiful, it not only conveyed it's message of sadness and longing, but painted a story with the colors of Autumn. I thought it fitting to use pictures of Doris Day and Rock Hudson as the main protagonists, given their popularity as a Romantic Comedy acting team, and in honor and tribute to their lifelong friendship. This song is very dear to me and this is one of the most beautiful covers I've ever heard, and I've heard most of them... Taken from the album "Day by Day" released by Columbia Records on December 17, 1956; here you have Doris Day accompanied by Paul Weston's orchestra rendering an exquisite and beautiful version of "Autumn Leaves". Enjoy.

Doris Day - Life Is Just A Bowl of Cherries
Doris Day recorded Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries on May 25,1967. Doris' son Terry Melcher said "Columbia and Doris were having a hard time." "Her contract expired, ran out sometime in 1967. She wasn't at all happy with the kind of songs she was singing. They never found enough time to work on her recordings. They became something that was just kind of tossed in between the movies. Her recording career wasn't given the kind of priority attention it deserved. For me, the only really sad part of Doris' career is the fact that the movies became so big and so important that for some reason they took precedence over the music." So - Doris booked studio time and recorded some of her personal favorites that weren't considered commercial by label executives. "Her feeling was that for a long time she had been recording title songs to movies, soundtrack albums, and other stuff where she felt that she personally had very little say in the choice of material," explained Terry. "So, she picked some of her favorites, had all the songs put way back in tempo just the way she really likes them, and made that record in two days." "I love those slow tempos," adds Doris. "That's the way I really enjoy singing more than anything. You usually can't get away with it, because the producer will invariably come out of the booth and say - 'You have to pick it up - People will go to sleep !' I didn't think so at all. I thought they were all wrong. They didn't think it was commercial and they're so ...
