Secret History of Silicon Valley
[Recorded: November 20, 2008] Today, Silicon Valley is known around the world as a fount of technology innovation and development fueled by private venture capital and peopled by fabled entrepreneurs. But it wasn't always so. Unbeknownst to even seasoned inhabitants, today's Silicon Valley had its start in government secrecy and wartime urgency. In this lecture, renowned serial entrepreneur Steve Blank presents how the roots of Silicon Valley sprang not from the later development of the silicon semiconductor but instead from the earlier technology duel over the skies of Germany and secret efforts around (and over) the Soviet Union. World War II, the Cold War and one Stanford professor set the stage for the creation and explosive growth of entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley. The world was forever changed when the Defense Department, CIA and the National Security Agency acted like today's venture capitalists funding this first wave of entrepreneurship. Steve Blank shows how these groundbreaking early advances lead up to the high-octane, venture capital fueled Silicon Valley we know today.

The Secret History of Silicon Valley
Google Tech Talks December 18, 2007 How Stanford & the CIA/NSA Built the Valley We Know Today, presented by Steve Blank. How much does an average Googler know about the history of the place he/she works in - Silicon Valley? Come and test your knowledge. I have seen this talk and I assure you - even seasoned Silicon Valley veterans will find this story interesting. Silicon Valley entrepreneur Steve Blank will talk about how World War II set the stage for the creation and explosive growth of Silicon Valley, and the role of Frederick Terman and Stanford in working with government agencies (including the CIA and the National Security Agency) to set up companies in this area that sparked the creation of hundreds of other enterprises. Steve Blank spent nearly 30 years as founder and executive of high tech companies in Silicon Valley, most recently the enterprise software firm E.piphany. He has been involved in or co-founded eight Silicon Valley startups, ranging from semiconductors to video games, and personal computers to supercomputers. He teaches entrepreneurship at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, Columbia University and Stanford's Graduate School of Engineering. This talk was hosted by Boris Debic

SOPA: Silicon Valley vs. Hollywood in fight against online piracy act
www.nma.tv The entertainment industry has long lobbied congress for tougher laws on piracy. It seems HR 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA was going to deliver the toughest penalties yet. Introduced by Texas congressman Lamar Smith, SOPA gives the government the authority to block whole websites for copyright infringement, rather than the existing system of take-down notices. This puts social websites such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube in particular danger as it would be all but impossible to monitor all of their users. For a while, it seemed like SOPA was destined for easy passage in congress. But the bill's backers did not count on a populist campaign rising in opposition to SOPA. Tech companies came together in a rare show of solidarity to fight the bill. Even Microsoft, a company that has long called for tougher piracy laws, acknowledge that SOPA goes too far. The website Tumblr's campaign to get its users to call congress generated 87834 calls alone. The American Censorship Day campaign sponsored by Fight for the Future and the Electronic Frontiers Foundation was also very successful. Has the tide turned against SOPA? With powerful congressional figures such as minority leader Nancy Pelosi speaking out against the bill as well as the energetic online opposition, its prospects for passage seems less certain. However, users on the site Reddit are not taking any chances...they are in the process of building what they call 'meshnet', a network that will directly <b>...</b>

A Chinese Typewriter in Silicon Valley
Google Tech Talk December 5, 2011 A Chinese Typewriter in Silicon Valley: What 150 Years of Chinese Information Technology can Teach the Alphabetic World Presented by Thomas S. Mullaney. ABSTRACT In 1862, an eccentric Frenchman published two essays about telegraphy: the first, a proposal for a Chinese telegraph code, and the second, a critique of Morse Code. Inspired by his study of Chinese, he argued that symbolic languages like Morse and other telegraph codes failed to measure up to the brilliance and power of the physical technology of the telegraph. Whereas the telegraph-as-machine was an immense achievement that granted humans a power bordering on the god-like, the semiotic architecture of telegraph codes remained crude and bounded to the languages out of which they were developed (namely English -- but also alphabetic languages more broadly). What was needed, he argued, was a symbolic interface that transcended existing human language, a human-machine interface that would unlock rather than inhibit the awesome potential of new communication technologies. I will show, this Frenchman's call to action was picked up and examined to a far greater extent than in any other part of the world. As compared to the Euro-American world of information technology, wherein ever-more sophisticated apparatuses of information technology were developed, Chinese experimentation centered on questions of semiotic interface, user-machine interaction, and mediation for some 150 years. Uppercut
“In Silicon Valley we have the highest concentration of aggressive people in the United States. And it's a place where all life has been reduced to working in a cubicle and then after work going out to have a Merlot at the Fromage bar. I'm kind of looking for something a little more primitive, a little more basic, something that appeals to the essential nature of a man."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TIM AND ERIC TO HOST WORLD PREMIERE OF ‘BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR’
ON FEBRUARY 27TH IN LOS ANGELES
Severin Films Partners with The Cinefamily to
Debut James Nguyen’s ‘Romantic Thriller’
LOS ANGELES, CA, February 10, 2010 – Severin Films (http://www.severin-films.com/) today announced that Tim and Eric, creators and stars of Adult Swim sketch comedy show Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, will host the highly-anticipated world premiere of BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR (www.birdemic.com), on February 27th at The Cinefamily in Los Angeles, California. Following the screening, Tim and Eric will lead a Q&A; with writer/producer/director James Nguyen and stars Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore. Severin is working on transforming the theater into a temporary aviary with epic displays of BIRDEMIC special effects, props and costumes that will put the Smithsonian to shame. An EPK video for BIRDEMIC can be viewed at http://vimeo.com/9082600. Fans can connect with BIRDEMIC on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/birdemic), Twitter (http://twitter.com/birdemic) and the Web (www.birdemic.com).
“Finally, Birdemic will have its proper and much-deserved debut,” said Carl Daft, CEO and co-founder of Severin Films. “Modern comedy legends, Tim and Eric, are beyond generous to host Severin’s world premiere of the film—we can’t think of a more fitting introduction to this night of groundbreaking cinema.”
BIRDEMIC, described by Nguyen as “a romantic thriller,” is a horror/action/special-effects-driven love story about a young couple trapped in a small Northern California town under siege by homicidal birds. BIRDEMIC also tackles topical issues of global warming, avian flu, world peace, organic living, sexual promiscuity and lavatory access.
Nguyen, a 42-year-old Vietnamese refugee, wrote, cast and shot the film over the course of four years using salary from his day job as a mid-level software salesman in Silicon Valley. The film pays homage to Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS via location shooting in Mission Bay, California, as well as an appearance by star of THE BIRDS Tippi Hedren (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippi_Hedren). When rejected for an official screening slot at Sundance, Nguyen spent eight days driving up and down the festival’s nearby streets in a van covered with fake birds, frozen blood and BIRDEMIC posters, while loudspeakers blared the sounds of eagle attacks and human screams. The tactic caught the attention of festival organizers, filmgoers and local police, as well as executives from Severin Films. Severin’s executives walked into a screening, took one look at Nguyen’s masterwork, and immediately locked up BIRDEMIC’s worldwide rights for the next twenty years. Discussions are currently underway for Severin to add an additional thirty years to the initial agreement.

Space Station Silicon Valley (N64) - Penguin Playpen
Gameplay video of Space Station: Silicon Valley for Nintendo 64 (N64). The Penguin Playpen level (level 13) is shown. The animals in this level are the penguin, cool cod, walrus, polar bear on treads, ski-husky, and seagull. Space Station: Silicon Valley is a unique 3D platformer in which you can take control of 40+ robotic animals, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Many levels involve some puzzle-solving, and the game is quite challenging. Unfortunately, this game is not currently available on the Wii Virtual Console. Hopefully it will be added to the line-up in the future, as it is an enjoyable game. It was developed by DMA Design and published by Take 2 Interactive.
