Naturalization and French Citizenship
Naturalization and French Citizenship
As France's government has reduced its annual naturalisation figures from 150000 to 100000 over the past year, the honour of becoming French citizen has become ever more important. At the Bouches du Rhône Prefecture in Marseille, 71 foreigners -- representing 14 nationalities -- are patiently waiting the last stage of the process started, on average, 2 years before. Some are young professionals who are looking for personal and administrative recognition that they fell they deserve, having respected France's republican values and paid French taxes. Others have lived on French soil for nearly fifty years, and are extremely proud to be able to call themselves from now on « French ». All have experienced the same administrative assault course, and now they can appreciate the realisation of their dreams. Having been handed a dossier holding elements of the French constitution and words to the Marseillaise, they have now also received the ultimate individual status symbol : French and European citizenship.
