Sexy Musical CHICAGO in Moscow | 2013 Russian Language Production | ARCHIVE
►►► "Behind the Scenes": Broadway Musical 'Chicago' on Russian Stage ◄◄◄ ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Moscow Youth Palace, Russia. (October 2013) ARCHIVE video: Behind the scenes during one of their last rehearsals before public viewing.... & The Moscow premiere of Chicago was held at the Moscow Palace of Youth. In the spirit of the classic itself, the premiere was styled around the 1920s era. Moscow's version of Chicago doesn't differ from the Broadway production, which has been playing for 17 years now in New York City and which has won 17 Tony awards. The plot, featuring a story of murder, greed, violence, exploitation, adultery and betrayal, was first penned by the Chicago journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins in 1926. The protagonists are women serving time in jail for murder, whose worst nightmare isn't the electric chair, but seeing their names disappear from the headlines. Writer Bob Fosse first turned it into a musical in 1975, complete with the characteristic jazz and dance from the era, with a score by John Kander. The Russian production was created by Andrei Morsin and Alexander Karpov, who have previously adapted children and family musicals for the Russian audience. Chicago, for them, was something of an experiment - rated 18+, it was definitely not for the whole family, although several celebrities turned up with their children for the premiere. This is the second time that a Chicago production has premiered in Moscow. The first, directed by and starring Russian pop singer Filipp Kirkorov, managed to draw a few loyal fans, but didn't really take off. According to Dmitry Bogachyov, the general director of Stage Entertainment, Kirkorov failed with the timing of the musical. In 2002, neither the audience nor the producers were ready for something like Chicago. The concurrent release of the movie adaptation, starring Richard Gere, failed to attract additional interest. In some ways, Chicago's success in Russia reflects what the production went through in New York City, where it also premiered twice, in 1976 and 1996. Just as in Russia, the second production was more successful. The Moscow production cost its creators more than 3 million euros, Dmitry Bogachyov, the producer and the head of Stage Entertainment, told The Moscow News. The elegant black and white decorations and costumes, the ostrich feathers and sparkles, the virtuoso jazz orchestra playing directly on the stage, as well as the sexual subtext of a multitude of half-naked dancing bodies, all set Chicago apart from the "family" musicals common in Moscow. The Moscow production starred Anastasia Makeeva as Roxie and Lika Rulla as Velma. Rulla played Velma in the 2002 production. Alexander Arsentiev from the Pushkin Theater was invited to play the role of Billy Flynn. Renowned Russian singer Larisa Dolina, who performed in the same role on Broadway at the Ambassador Theater, played Matron Mama Morton. Although Dolina's role involves little dancing, she was a natural for the part. Supporting actors were Alexei Rossoshansky, who played the cheated husband, and Daler Nazarov, who played a journalist. Both managed to successfully play in roles suited for them. [Video Credits: RIA Novosti, The Moscow News,"Stage Entertainment" Theater Company]- published: 02 Dec 2013

The British Council has been busy introducing more young and acclaimed UK writers to Moscow readers. Among their guests this time is David Mitchell, a Man Booker nominated novelist most known for his epic novel Cloud Atlas, a series of interconnected stories spanning several centuries, from Victorian England to North Korea of the future. Even before the book got major exposure - thanks to a Hollywood adaptation, Mitchell was famous in his own right. In 2007 he was included in Time magazine's list of 100 most influential people. Protecting Wikileaks & Freedom - Guardian Writer Trevor Timm Interview
Trevor Timm is executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, and a lawyer and activist fighting for free speech and government transparency. Timm is a prolific writer whose work has appeared in The Guardian, Salon, The Atlantic, Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, Harvard Law and Policy Review, Politico, and PBS MediaShift. Freedom of the Press, and Freedom of Speech are in the First Amendment, and they're vital to the definition of the United States and what it stands for. So why aren't journalists who speak out for government transparency safe and comfortable inside our nation's borders? Trevor Timm fights for those rights with the Freedom of the Press Foundation. Whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning shouldn't be intimidated to speak the truth to U.S. citizens, and people who so much as visit Wikileaks shouldn't be tracked. Cenk Uygur talks about all this and more in this special interview with Trevor Timm in TYT's series on civil liberties and national security. U.S. says Russian military action in Ukraine would be 'grave mistake'
The U.S. has warned Russia that any military action in Ukraine would be a "grave mistake," after Moscow ordered surprise military exercises near its border with Ukraine. This comes as Ukraine's interim leadership named the individuals it wants to form a new cabinet. Kim Min-ji reports. The United States is stepping up the pressure on Russia not to intervene in Ukraine. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday warned Moscow that any kind of military intervention that violates Ukraine's territorial integrity would be "a grave mistake. This came after Russia ordered surprise military exercises near the Ukrainian border. Although the war games are said to be nothing unusual,... the timing raises suspicion of a possible military intervention in Ukraine. Russia's defense ministry said, however, the exercises were "to check combat readiness of armed forces" and have nothing to do with Ukraine's internal affairs. In the meantime, Ukraine is in the midst of a shaky transition. The interim leadership announced Wednesday its line-up for a new cabinet,... following the ousting of President Viktor Yanukovich last week. The Maidan Council -- Kiev's main protest camp -- proposed Arseny Yatseniuk,... a former economy minister,... as prime minister,... and Oleksander Shlapak,... former deputy head of the central bank,... as finance minister. The full list of proposed leaders will be presented to parliament on Thursday for approval. If confirmed, officials will likely seek aid from Western powers to stave off default,... as Russia is expected to back away from a 15-billion-dollar bailout program it offered Yanukovich. The U.S. said it was considering loan guarantees and additional funding to assist Ukraine. Earlier Wednesday,... pro-Ukraine and pro-Russia protesters clashed in the capital of Ukraine's Crimea region -- where the majority of people are ethnic Russians -- leaving one person dead and many others injured. Yanukovich fled Kiev last Friday after days of violence. The new government wants him tried at the International Criminal Court for ordering the killing of scores of anti-government protesters. Special interview with writer Helie Lee
Special interview with writer Helie Lee
Southern California is home to the largest community of Koreans outside of Korea. One of the best-known Korean-Americans in the state is bestselling author and artist Helie Lee, and our Hwang Ji-hye , currently in Los Angeles, had the chance to talk with her about her bicultural heritage and her work as an artist. Born in Seoul, Helie Lee was only four-years old when her family moved to Montreal, Canada in 1968. After a year, the family settled in Los Angeles and since then, her journey in search of her roots started. Helie's bestseller "Still Life With Rice" and "In The Absence of Sun" are also about her family's experience in Korea from the 1930s, under Japan's colonial rule, through the Korean War, and until the late 1990s. "English was never something that I grasped or felt I had talents towards but it is ironically the thing I became as an adult. And it's because of the stories of my family." Helie says a sense of identity -- knowing where she comes from as a Korean -- made her what she is today and will be tomorrow. "And if you don't understand who you are you can't be present. If you can't be present, there's no way you can envision the future. And I want to envision a future for myself, I want to envision a future for my twins and I want to envision a future for my community and so it is crucial that we understand the metal of our back." "On that note, you lived as a man for more than six months, tell me about your experience as a man and why did you do that?" "I thought men had it better, boys had it better and when I had the opportunity I decided to experience that and to prove that what I was thinking was true. No. The moment I did the transformation, I lived as a man for 6 and a half months. For the first month it was very fun, every new experience was very fun everything seemed new everything tasted new, looked new but once I actually became absorbed to my male character, I realized that it's not always better on the other side of the fence." As a male, Helie learnt there is an image of masculinity that men always have to carry with them... and there are certain limitations that are not acknowledged by society. Drawing on her experiences, Helie performed a one woman show in Hollywood that was so successful that it ran for six months, instead of the four week-run she had originally planned. Helie now hopes to contribute more to society by sharing her experiences. "I've done everything I want to do for my career for my job before I became a mother and a wife. So for the next 20, 30 years I just want to be a humanitarian. I want to be a great mother, a great wife, I want to be an excellent daughter, I want to set a better world at least in my community here for my children."
