VESAK 10 - Sri Lanka
VESAK 10 - Sri Lanka
Vesākha (Pali; Sanskrit: Vaiśākha वैशाख) is an annual holiday observed traditionally by Buddhists in the Indian subcontinent and South East Asian countries of Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia.[1] Sometimes informally called "Buddha's Birthday," it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment (nirvāɳa), and passing away (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha.[2] The exact date of Vesākha varies according to the various lunar calendars used in different traditions. In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, it falls on the full moon Uposatha day (typically the 5th or 6th lunar month). Vesākha Day in China is on the eighth of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. The date varies from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar but falls in April or May. In 2010 the first full moon day in May is the twenty-seventh.[3] However, Myanmar and Cambodia observe the event this year on April 28, 2010. (Extracted from Wikipedia)

VESAK 2009
VESAK 2009
At the end of the nineteenth century, the collapse in India of a stupa that belonged to the clan of the Shakyas resulted in the discovery of authentic Relics of the historical Buddha that had been preserved for more than two millenia. One hundred eleven years later, considering the political upheaval in Asia and the spread of Buddhism in the West and especially in Europe, the Thai Patriarchs, with the approval of the Buddhist communities in Asia, decided to present the Relics to the Western World and to entrust them to a European nation, their new land of asylum. The Patriarchs selected France, land of the Rights of Man and more specifically Paris, a city that represents the dynamic nature of European Buddhism. The Buddhist Union of France received word from the Thai authorities, who asked the Union to receive and keep the Relics and to make plans to celebrate this historically significant event. The Relics are a gift to the West from Somdej Phra Buddhacharn, Head of Thailands Patriarchal Committee of the Sangha ...
