Gypsy Moth IV
Gipsy Moth IV is a key part of Britain's national maritime heritage, and represents a significant milestone in the history of world sailing. Sir Francis Chichester sailed her singlehanded around the world, stopping just once in Sydney, completing the voyage in 226 days at sea. Sir Francis achieved his objective of completing the voyage in a time comparable to those of the great wool clippers -- no mean feat for a boat of around one quarter of the size and being sailed singlehanded.

Gypsy Moth Q & A
www.mda.state.mn.us Ranked among America's most destructive tree pests, gypsy moth has caused millions of dollars in damage to forests as it has spread from New England to Wisconsin in recent decades. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) maintains a statewide monitoring program to watch for start-up infestations, and when an infestation is found, the department moves in to eradicate the pests before they can spread. This short video contains answers to some of the most common questions about gypsy moth. Learn why gypsy moths are such a problem for our forests, how MDA looks for infestations of th bug, and what we can do to stop its spread into Minnesota. Sinister Virus Zombifies, Liquefies Gypsy Moth Caterpillars
A nefarious baculovirus, that only targets the gypsy moth caterpillar, infects it's host and forces it to climb to the very top of a tree, before liquefying it and showering deadly, disease-ridden goo down onto the other caterpillars below. Horror horror horror. It's now been discovered that just a single gene found in the virus causes this entire process, giving birth to hundreds of nightmarish scenarios involving mutated versions of the common cold. We're basically one gene away from a flu that makes us walk into The Gap, and explode into a deadly puddle of ichor. Sweet dreams tonight, kids!

Flashback 1991: Gypsy Moth
It was in 1869 that the Gypsy Moth first made its presence felt in North America, near Boston to be exact .... and precisely a century later that it began its tree foliage destruction in Ontario. While the Federal Government took responsibility for helping keep the infestation under control in the early years, in 1981 it handed most of that responsibility off to the provinces.... then in 1991 Ontario announced that it would, for financial reasons, be cancelling the Gypsy Moth private land program, leaving landowners scrambling for solutions.... the subject of this John Blake report in the latter summer of 1991. By '93 land owners were almost entirely on their own, though certain municipalities helped by providing funding as did some cottage associations .... while the Ministry of Natural Resources and Canadian Forest Services, continued providing annual surveys and scientific advice. Since then, the Gypsy moth population has fluctuated from year to year ... the spraying program, which by the way is using primarily the spray with the least negative impact on the environment, has helped ... and so has a fungus, deadly to the moth, imported some years ago from Japan. In cool wet weather such as we've had last year and the first of this, the fungus flourishes with a resulting reduction in Gypsy Moth numbers.
