making a betel nut chew
Quick video showing the Micronesian method of creating a betel nut chew. Betel nut use refers to a combination of three ingredients: the nut of the betel palm ( Areca catechu ), part of the Piper betel vine, and lime. Anecdotal reports have indicated that small doses generally lead to euphoria and increased flow of energy while large doses often result in sedation. Although all three ingredients may contribute to these effects, most experts attribute the psychoactive effects to the alkaloids found in betel nuts.

Betel Nut Palm (Noni Supari)
Areca catechu is the areca palm or areca nut palm, (Filipino: bunga, Malay: pinang, Malayalam: അടക്ക adakka), a species of palm which grows in much of the tropical Pacific, Asia, and parts of east Africa. The palm is believed to have originated in either Malaysia or the Philippines. Areca is derived from a local name from the Malabar Coast of India and catechu is from another Malay name for this palm, caccu. This palm is often erroneously called the betel tree because its fruit, the areca nut, is often chewed along with the betel leaf, a leaf from a vine of the Piperaceae family.See More:-en.wikipedia.org

Betel nut (Areca nut) harvesting
With my wife,Varsha, I visited Spice Garden at Ponda near Goa on 29th Dec 2009. The person in the video (lets call himm Tarzan for obvious reasons) demonstrated the way to harvest betel nuts. Unlike other crops, betel nuts are harvested by climbing just 1 tree, and directly jumping to other trees in vicinity. Typically, the boys harvest 40 trees in a day before coming back on ground.

Chewing Betel Nut in Sam Neua, Laos
Betel Chewing has been going on for thousands of years. Areca nut and betel leaf are its two crucial components, born by the areca palm tree and betel vine, respectively. Betel quid composition can vary from country to country, but its main ingredients are betel leaf, the areca nut and slaked lime. The Lao use a form of white lime. Every betel chewer has to use certain tools to prepare his betel quid: a cutter of knife to cut the areca nut into quarters and a container for slaked lime. In Laos there are usually five components: an areca cutter, lime tube, betel box, spittoon and betel mortar. For centuries, people saw betel-chewing as a useful and elegant custom. When betel is chewed, hunger and thirst are inhibited and energy-requiring activities decrease in energy consumption. It generates a pleasant, bittersweet taste and stimulates in mild fashion the mind and the spirit, being able to freshen and sweeten the breath and to cleanse the mouth. In Laos, I rarely see middle aged women chewing betel nut, though some will on special occasions. Almost all younger woman dont chew. Its the older women you will usually see chewing betel nut and their teeth, or at least whats left, are all stained a red-purple, along with their lips.

nihi ta måma' gi gimå-hu! let's chew betelnut at muh house
Just a little video of me getting my måma' on. Mamå'on is an age old tradition in the islands, spanning from the Marianas islands, to the FSM, Indonesia, and even into the Asian continent and beyond to the Indian Subcontinent. Mamå'on, or måma' for short is most commonly a type of chew (or quid) consisting of pugua' (betelnut, or the seeds of the betel palm, Areca catechu), pupulu (the leaves of the of the betel or pepper vine Piper betel), and åfok (slaked lime, a white powder made from baking either limestone or clam shells) . Traditionally Chamorros on Guam chew the mature betelnut, however I prefer to chew the younger seeds as they do in the NMI as they're much less harder than the mature seed. The åfok is usually omitted now-a-days by younger Chamorros who just chew the pugua' and pupulu. In addition to these items, Micronesians and some Chamorros chew it with cardamom which is most likely an Indian influence. Also, in the past amåska or tobacco leaves would be chewed in the mix. In Guam the usage of amåska has seen a decline, however Micronesians on Guam and the people of the NMI continue using amåska in their chew. I prefer not to use tobacco as I'm not too fond of the taste, and the marked increase in the chew's intensity.
