Paul Desmond plays "Emily" - Monterey Jazz festival 1975
Paul Desmond - November 25, 1924 - 1977. Alto Saxophonist. Born Paul Emil Breitenfeld. Musical genius. Composer of the jazz classic "Take Five". The song is the waltz "Emily" by Johnny Mandell (from the film "The Americanisation of Emily) performed at the Monterey Jazz festival in 1975. He played a Selmer Super Balanced Action Alto, a Gregory 4a-18m mouthpiece, and Rico 3-1/2 reeds and is seen here wearing "the suit". He stays fairly close to the lovely melody for the first 32 bars, and then off he goes. The effortlessness with which he spins beautiful melodic improvised lines is depressing (How did he do that?!!). This was the result of genius. He had total command of his instrument, having the ability to play far in to the altissimo register long before it became a studied discipline for the saxophone. And he just stands there, moving little more than his long fingers. No jumping, dancing, swaying, or crouching, just beautiful, swinging music. Note that he is quoting the waltz "Would You" at 2:35. He appears pleased with the result at 2:43. This is what brilliance sounds like.

Paul Desmond : Nancy
In the early 1970s Paul Desmond received an offer to play at Toronto's 'Bourbon Street' nightclub and he wanted to have Jim Hall join him for the extended booking, in a pianoless quartet. Hall was not available, but he recommended a little-known guitarist from the Canadian prairies named Ed Bickert. So began a rather magical meeting of the minds. The rest of the Toronto rhythm section included Don Thompson on bass and Jerry Fuller on drums. The run at Bourbon Street lifted Desmond out his artistic doldrums and led to a late and lasting series of fine recordings, including "The Paul Desmond Quartet: Live", from which the performance in this video is taken. Ed Bickert's guitar work played no small part in inspiring Paul to new heights. The piece is "Nancy (With The Laughing Face)" Paul Desmond died a year and a half after this recording, in 1977, at the age of 52. Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond -- Stardust
College of the Pacific, December 14, 1953. Paul Desmond began playing this tune professionally when he was with the Jack Fina band in 1949. It later became a staple of the early Brubeck quartets as Paul and Dave found many ways to improvise on it. There are at least 9 separate recordings of Desmond playing this tune and they are all different from each other; each has its own unique melodic variations and character. This one sat in Fantasy's tape vault for nearly 50 years. Taken at a slower tempo than the others, it may be the most complex and unusual of all of them. With Ron Crotty on bass and Joe Dodge on drums.

Paul Desmond & Jim Hall - Night has a thousand eyes (PAUL DESMOND TRIBUTE)
Paul Desmond (November 25, 1924 -- May 30, 1977), born Paul Emil Breitenfeld, was a jazz alto saxophonist and composer born in San Francisco, best known for the work he did in the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for penning that group's greatest hit, "Take Five". He was not only one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast's "cool jazz" scene, but also the possessor of a legendary and idiosyncratic wit. In addition to his work with Brubeck he led several of his own groups and did significant collaborations with artists such as Gerry Mulligan, Jim Hall and Chet Baker. After years of chain smoking and general poor health, Desmond succumbed to lung cancer in 1977 following one last tour with Brubeck.
