British Cyprus/The Sovereign British Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia
The Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two UK-administered areas on the island of Cyprus that comprise the Sovereign Base Areas military bases of the United Kingdom. The bases were retained by the UK following the granting of independence and the eventual transition of Cyprus from a crown colony to an independent sovereign state. The United Kingdom demanded and succeeded in continuing to occupy a portion of Cyprus in the form of military bases because of the strategic location of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea in pursuit of UK interests. The bases are split into Akrotiri / Ακρωτήρι / Agrotur, along with Episkopi Garrison, is part of an area known as the Western Sovereign Base Area or WSBA. Dhekelia / Δεκέλεια / Dikelya, along with Ayios Nikolaos, is part of the Eastern Sovereign Base Area or ESBA.

Forces help preserve Cyprus wildlife 12.08.11
The Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus are not only home to British Forces based on the Island, but also provide a haven for wildlife. The environment surrounding Akrotiri, Episkopi and Dhekelia is largely unspoilt - and thanks to the work of volunteers and British Forces Personnel - endangered species are being given a helping hand.

Aftermath of Cyprus explosion 12.07.11
Schools remain closed across all four British military bases in Cyprus following yesterday's explosion that knocked out the island's largest power station. Twelve people were killed in the blast including the head of Cyprus' Navy Andreas Ioannides. The commander of the Evangelos Florakis base, Lambros Lambrou, also died. Power was restored to RAF Akrotiri, Episkopi, Dhekelia and Ayios Nikolaos overnight and things are currently running as normal. The Cyprus Electric Authority have said they are trying to keep the impact on vital sectors to a minimum but the Sovereign base areas have been warned that they may experience power interruptions over the next 24 hours The majority of shops and cafes are open for business but due to the power uncertainty Service Children's Education took the decision to close the schools for another day. They will assess the situation and decide later on whether or not they open for the rest of the week. The Vassilikou power station went offline when containers of Iranian arms seized from a vessel in 2009 exploded at a Cypriot naval base yesterday morning. The Defence Minister and Military Chief have resigned over the incident.

Death toll rises to 15 in Cyprus naval base explosion 11.07.11
Cyprus's defence minister and army chief have resigned after a massive explosion at a munitions dump killed at least 15 people. The blast happened at a military base where confiscated Iranian munitions were being held. It shut down the island's largest power station, causing widespread power cuts, including to the four British military bases on the island. The Ministry of Defence says no British personnel were injured. It's believed the explosion at the Evangelos Florakis naval base near Zygi between Limassol and Larnaca may have been caused by a brush fire. The British military bases of RAF Akrotiri, Episkopi, Dhekelia and Ayios Nikolaus have all been hit by power shortages. With criticism mounting over how the material that exploded had been handled and stored, Defence Minister Costas Papacostas and the country's top military official, National Guard Chief General Petros Tsalikides, resigned. A government spokesman said investigators had ruled out sabotage as a cause for the blast. He said experts will be called from abroad to help determine the exact cause of the explosion. President Dimitris Christofias had asked Tsalikides and Papacostas to remain in their posts until replacements were found. The government has declared a three-day mourning period with all flags at public buildings flying at half staff. State funerals will be held for those killed. The concussion wave from the blast damaged houses in nearby villages, and knocked out the island's main power station ...
