7 Wonders of India: Olive Ridley Sea Turtles
Found in the Indian Ocean along the Bay of Bengal is Orissa. Average weight of the turtles is just over 100 lb (up to 50 kgs). They have a high-domed shell, with a carapace length of only 30 inches (70 cms). Olive Ridleys are omnivorous, feeding on crabs, shrimp, rock lobsters, sea grasses, snails, fish, sessile, pelagic tunocates and small invertebrates. The Orissa coast is one of the three sites worldwide where mass nesting of the Olive Ridley Turtle occurs. This sea turtle is especially known for its mass nesting when several thousand turtles migrate to the breeding ground to mate and nest simultaneously. Hindu mythology worships sea turtles as an incarnation of one of their gods. Over the past five years, sea turtles have suffered mass mortality along the Orissa coast due to death by drowning as incidental catch in trawl - fishing nets. About 5000 to 10000 dead turtles have been washed ashore each year, a total of over 1,00000 in the last 10 years.

Endangered Olive Ridley Turtles Nesting in Eastern India
For more news visit ☛english.ntdtv.com Endangered Olive Ridley turtles flock in huge numbers for a mass nesting on the beaches of India's eastern Orissa state. Females dig a pit on the beach and lay their eggs which hatch together at night around 50 days later. But the turtles are an endangered species, so people are on hand to make sure the turtles nest undisturbed. Endangered Olive Ridley turtles flock in huge numbers for a mass nesting on the beaches of Gahirmatha in India's eastern Orissa state. The Olive Ridley and its sister species, Kemp Ridley, are the only turtles to exhibit synchronized nesting behavior. Mass nesting at Gahirmatha began around February 28 and around 358000 turtles have nested at the site. [Ranjan Ku Das, Sub-collector, Gahirmatha] "The nest site selection of this turtle depends upon different beach characteristics. Various beach characteristics might be - the sand particle size, the temperature, the slope and the beach geomorphology itself." Police are deployed on the beach to ensure the safe and undisturbed mass nesting of the turtles. [Prabhakar Sabat, Forester]: "All the police and forest officers have been deployed here, they are keeping watch and surveillance over the trawlers and other boatmen who are having fishing activity in this area, and overnight also they are staying here to keep watch on the safe nesting of Olive Ridley turtles." The beaches of Orissa see the highest number of nesting females. Females dig a pit on the beach and ...

Olive Ridley sea turtle digging a nest
Theolive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), also known as the Pacific ridley, is a species of sea turtle. The olive ridley is predominantly carnivorous, especially in immature stages of the life cycle. Animal prey consists of protochordates or invertebrates, which can be caught in shallow marine waters or estuarine habitats. Common prey items include jellyfish, tunicates, sea urchins, bryozoans, bivalves, snails, shrimp, crabs, rock lobsters, and sipunculid worms. Additionally, consumption of jellyfish and both adult fish (eg Sphoeroides) and fish eggs may be indicative of pelagic (open ocean) feeding . The olive ridley is also known to feed on filamentous algae in areas devoid of other food sources . Captive studies have indicated some level of cannibalistic behavior in this species. Baby Olive Ridley Turtles Journey To the Sea
The olive ridley sea turtle nests at several sites in the western Indian Ocean, Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The single most important breeding area for olive ridley turtles in the Indian Ocean along the Bay of Bengal is Orissa. Orissa boasts of possessing the world's largest known rookery of Olive Ridley sea turtle. Olive Ridley sea turtles migrate in huge numbers from the beginning of November, every year, for mating and nesting along the coast of Orissa. Unlike last year, year 2009 saw thousands of Olive Ridley Turtles making their annual journey to the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary. The mass nesting started on March 21 and continued till March 24. In these four days, around 1.7 lakh turtles had nested at the site. It has been reported by forest officials, that the turtles scanned the serene Gahirmatha beach for quite a while before settling down to lay eggs here. Forest officials deployed in the area have ensured that the female species, which lay about 120 to 150 eggs each, are left undisturbed. The beach is protected and kept under strong vigil till the eggs hatch after 45 to 50 days and the small turtles commence on their seaward journey - This entire phenomenon proves Greenpeace campaign against Tata Dhamra Port Project is absolutely baseless.

Of the eight species of sea turtles found worldwide, five occur in Indian coastal waters. A major nesting ground for the species is in the Indian state of Orrisa. Newly Hatched Olive Ridley Turtles at Orissa Coastline
Gahirmatha is the only marine wildlife sanctuary of Orissa. Olive Ridley sea turtles migrate in huge numbers from the beginning of November, every year, for mating and nesting along the coast of Orissa. Gahirmatha is considered one of world's largest nesting sites with around 700000-800000 turtles laying eggs on the beach every year. Unlike last year, when the turtles were conspicuously absent, year 2009 saw thousands of Olive Ridley Turtles making their annual journey to the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary. The mass nesting at Gahirmatha started on March 21 and continued till March 24. In these four days, around 1.7 lakh turtles had nested at the site. Contrary to the Greenpeace Tata controversy, dredging activities in the nearby Dhamra port, has not affected the nesting & hatching of olive ridley turtles in any ways.

Eagle Point Resort, Sepoc Beach, Olive Ridley Turtle Release, Full. 2011-05-06 avi
In February 2011 an endangered Olive Ridley sea turtle laid 85 eggs on Sepoc Beach. We protected the laying area from predators and once the eggs had hatched we transferred them to a concrete swimming pool area that we made specifically for this occasion. We kept the baby turtles in safety for a period of around 6 weeks and then we gradually released them back to the wild for hopefully a long and adventurous life in the hope that one or more of these endangered turtles may return someday and lay their own eggs.
