Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone in Bright Moments (1928) [AUDIO ONLY but COMPLETE]
Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone in Bright Moments (1928) [AUDIO ONLY but COMPLETE]
This is a historic rarity which unfortunately survives only in audio form, Jack Benny's first movie appearance in an early Vitaphone short, "Bright Moments" (1928). The little lady who joins in the act under the name of Marie Marlowe is Mary Livingstone, Jack's wife. It's truly unfortunate that the film portion has been lost, but we're lucky to have this sound disc to at least give some indication of what the film was like. Jack and Mary are barely recognizable. Offered here more as a historical curiosity than because it's entertaining per se-- but I thought it worth uploading since most circulating copies of this sound disc are incomplete, cutting off what was Mary's first appearance in film as well. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2792434/reference- published: 20 Dec 2013

Lux Radio Theater - Brewster's Millions {Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone}
Lux Radio Theater, a long-run classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934-35); CBS (1935-54) and NBC (1954-55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. It became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. Broadcasting from New York, the series premiered at 2:30pm, October 14, 1934, on the NBC Blue Network with a production of Seventh Heaven starring Miriam Hopkins and John Boles in a full-hour adaptation of the 1922--24 Broadway production by Austin Strong. The host was the show's fictional producer, Douglass Garrick (portrayed by John Anthony). Doris Dagmar played another fictional character, Peggy Winthrop, who delivered the Lux commercials. Each show featured a scripted session with Garrick talking to the lead actors. Anthony appeared as Garrick from the premiere 1934 episode until June 30, 1935. Garrick was portrayed by Albert Hayes from July 29, 1935 to May 25, 1936, when the show moved to the West Coast. Cecil B. DeMille took over as the host on June 1, 1936, continuing until January 22, 1945. Greetings from Hollywood, Ladies And Gentleman...... Tonight's Broadcast: Cavalcade Starring: Jack Benny, Mary Livingstone Original Air Date: February 15, 1937 Episode Number: 120 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ published: 14 Feb 2014

Instead, she lectures him on being so cheap. Jack dozes on the couch and dreams about their wedding ceremony, with justice of the peace Don Wilson turning it into a Lucky commercial. Then it's on to their 21st anniversary; he's a failed radio actor/house husband and she's the breadwinner, still working at the May Company. Eventually, "dream Mary" also launches into him for being a cheapskate. In the epilogue, Jack brings out both Mary and Joanie for bows. Jack Benny's 40th Birthday Celebration (Shower of Stars, Feb 13, 1958) Part 3 of 5
On Feb 13, 1958, "Shower of Stars" presented a gala celebration of Jack Benny's (gasp) 40th birthday. Despite the fact that it's all a gag, the list of performers who turned out to pay tribute to Jack is astounding, including most of the major performers who had been part of his program going all the way back to his debut on radio. Even Mary Livingstone shows up, in what I believe is her only appearance ever on a live television broadcast (by this point in her life, Mary was terrified of appearing in front of live audiences and only appeared in ocassional pre-filmed episodes of the Benny TV show). Just about the only regular cast member not on the program is Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, who was too ill to participate (as Jack explains in the program). This is a fairly strange program, filled with bizarre musical tributes and overstuffed with guests. Supposedly broadcast live from the Coconut Grove, the restaurant looks like a set to me, but I can't be sure. There are clearly segments that have been pre-filmed (e.g., the scene in Jack's bedroom); but what's really strange is that the entire program-- even the portions that appear to have been broadcast live-- uses an artificial laugh track to sweeten the audience response. If you have an ear for these things, you can't miss it. But how could there be laugh track sweetening on a live broadcast? Despite how big a deal is made of Jack Benny finally turning 40, his character predictably reverted to being perpetually 39 afterwards, with no reference ever made again to this nationally televised celebration. Here's just a partial list of the guest stars: Mary Livingstone, Dennis Day, Don Wilson, Phil Harris, Mel Blanc, Frank Nelson, Bob Crosby, Johnny Green, Andy Devine, Frank Parker, Larry Stevens, The Sportsmen Quartet, Sam Hearn, Jo Stafford, Paul Douglas, Van Johnson Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk-Cf_wE_18 Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MON4dk9ZXiQ Part 4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR3Q605_MRg Part 5: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adpm1wYwIPk http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0700163/reference- published: 20 Sep 2013
