The focus of the war in Syria shifted to the city of Aleppo after rebels moved in from the outskirts, sparking street battles and forcing thousands of civilians to flee. Earlier reports suggested the rebels were receiving sophisticated weapons via the Turkish border and, Gulf nations said they were putting the fighters on payroll. UN observers have, meanwhile, left besieged Aleppo for security reasons. And as RT's Oksana Boyko reports from Syria, literally no one is safe. Israeli authorities have demolished five Palestinian homes in occupied East Jerusalem, saying they were built illegally without permits. But Palestinians say Israeli authorities have made it nearly impossible to obtain such permits. Human rights groups have accused Israel of using the demolitions to tighten its hold on the occupied territory, despite international calls to halt the practice. Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett reports. Related article

Inside Syria's War

For downloads and more info visit: www.journeyman.tv This powerful exclusive is the first film to access the Free Syrian Army's secret labyrinth of caves and also holds a rare interview with the FSA leader. A fascinating insight to how the battle for Syria is being fought. "Please don't film!" one fighter says, as two rebels argue in the pitch black over the presence of a journalist. In this increasingly violent war the rebels have been using their local knowledge to great advantage. And these 3000 year old caves are of huge strategic importance. "The army besieged us many times and we always slipped through." But local knowledge will only go so far and the rebels are hard pressed to counter the might of the Syrian army with limited resources. As one failed test run of a home-made mortar shows, they don't have much to work with. They are disheartened by months of fighting without help. "America and Europe hide behind the Russian veto. They lie to us." Even the head of the Free Syrian Army, Colonel Riad al-Assad, is unable to help. As rebel groups come to him for guidance he can only encourage coordination. When asked about the suicide bomb that killed the minister of defence he says, "This is an integral part of the revolutionary action. It could break the regime's back." As things get increasingly desperate, anything that hastens the end of the bloodshed in Syria will form a part of their strategy. SBS Related article

Britain's former Ambassador to Syria, Sir Andrew Green, has told British Forces News that getting involved in the Civil War in Syria would be' like sticking hands in a meat grinder.' Sir Andrew said the situation in Syria was so complicated that outside intervention would be a massive mistake. He was speaking after it emerged the Syrian Prime Minister, Riad Hijab, had defected with his family to Jordan. His spokesman read a statement from Mr Hijab, saying he had left what he called a terrorist regime and joined the revolution. Activists say two other ministers have also defected. But they say the finance minister, Mohammad Jalilati, was arrested as he tried to escape. This has been denied on Syrian state television, which broadcast a phone interview it said was with Mr Jalilati, saying he was working as usual in his office. In Aleppo, there has been fierce fighting, with anti-Government Forces claiming 13 people have been killed, as the Assad regime appears to be preparing for a major assault to drive them from the country's second city. A bomb has exploded on the third floor of the Syrian state TV and radio building in the capital, Damascus, Syrian television reports. Three people were reported wounded and the explosion caused some damage but state TV continued broadcasting. Hours later, state TV reported that Prime Minister Riad Hijab had been fired. Appointed two months ago, he had been seen as a staunch loyalist. The Jordanian government has confirmed he has defected ... Related article
Standard Chartered shares slump over allegations
Standard Chartered shares slump over allegations

Shares of Standard Chartered have plunged amid allegations that the British bank was involved in money laundering in Iran. More than £11.5bn has been wiped from the stock market value as shares dropped 20% by lunchtime in London The sudden plunge in value comes amid fears the company may be suspended from doing business in New York after the firm was accused by state authorities of allegedly handling more than £161bn in transactions with Iranian banks. Iran is subject to US economic sanctions over its nuclear programme, and The New York State Department of Financial Services has said that the company made millions in fees through 60000 secret transactions in Iran for nearly a decade. The US regulator labelled Standard Charted as a 'rogue institution', saying that the bank had left the US 'vulnerable to terrorists, weapon dealers, drug kings and corrupt regimes'. Standard Charted has denied the allegations, declaring that it 'strongly rejects the position or portrayal of facts as set out in the order', and saying that the statement issued by the US regulator did not present "a full and accurate picture of the facts". They say that over 99.9% of transactions relating to Iran followed regulations, with the total amount not complying with the US framework under £9m.
