A lesson of Belarusian # 1 of 6 - English subtitles
A Lesson of Belarusian is documentary from the former Soviet republic of Belarus. The country is often labelled the last dictatorship in Europe, ruled by president Aleksander Lukashenko's arbitrary and ruthless iron fist. In many ways, the country has reversed time and now follows the logic from its Soviet legacy and replaced the mentality, economics, structures of society, language, national flag and symbols with that of its Soviet past. Hence it is the state, which has the monopoly on ultimate power, which is being used to steer and control all aspects of the citizens' life. Since A. Lukahsenko was elected president in 1994, he has used the state to wage a "cold civil war" against all aspects of opposition, in his effort to create a stable country with a conformed and isolated population, who only follows the orders from the president - whose legitimacy cannot be questioned. This harassment has prevented the emergence of an effective civic society and a political opposition, which could counterweight the president's power monopoly. In this atmosphere the documentary follows a young activists who never gives up believing that Belarus one day will be free and democratic. Franek Viacorka studies at an elite school (lyceum) established by his father to promote the Belarusian language and culture. However, the school has been banned and operating underground since 2003, a victim of the anti-democratic rule of President Lukashenko. Franek and his classmates are both ...

Activist's fears over Belarus election
Belarus is holding a presidential election on Sunday, which is widely expected to see Alexander Lukashenko re-elected for a fourth term. After 16 years in office, Lukashenko has become Europe's longest serving leader. Marina Bogdanovich, an opposition activist who says she was intimidated by the government and put under surveillance for her activism, voiced concerns to Al Jazeera that the post-Soviet state will continue to not have the same freedoms as other western countries if Lukashenko is re-elected. Belarusian Waltz
Trailer for the award-winning documentary comedy. Belarus, Europe's last dictatorship, is ruled by the despotic hand of Alexander Lukashenko. The ex-Soviet leader has virtually silenced all but one critic - lone performance artist Alexander Pushkin. He stages public stunts mocking the dictators pretensions. Belarusian Waltz is a comic documentary film, an offbeat tale of post-modern street theater meeting 1930s-style authoritarianism. The film offers a surprising window into the soul of the Belarusian people. Belarusian Waltz was nominated for Prix Europa and the European Film Academy Award for Best Documentary Film. The Iron Fist Returns - Belarus
Aug 1998 The end of the Soviet Union was supposed to end mindless suppression, but in Belarus, some say Stalins's ghost is rising. After 4 years of increasingly dictatorial rule, President Lukashenko has rolled back personal liberties and put back the iron fist of the state. For Belarusians it's as if Glasnost and independence never happened. In a rare protest, old men and head-scarfed mothers are bundled into the back of police vans. One man is not even fit enough to step-up into the van, yet the truncheon battering at his back is unceasing. This is a president who rules with the police and the KGB by his side. The former Deputy foreign minister now fears Lukashenko has become mentally unbalanced. This is after all a man who expresses ardent admiration for Hitler. And, after preaching the rhetoric of Belarusian nationalism, stunned everyone with moves to re-unite with Russia. For film director Yuri, Lukashenko is a perfect vehicle for comedy. His satirical profile of the president was instantly banned but shown to wide acclaim in Western Europe. Predictably for Belarus, it took only two days for some government thugs to wipe the smile off Yuri's face. Many believe Lukashenko's moves to Russian re-unification are simply a veiled attempt to open the doors to the Russian presidency. We wait to see how far this Belarusian strongman's career can go. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

THE CHILDREN OF THE CLONE
THE CHILDREN OF THE CLONE
'you will be incorporated!'
An award-winning portrait of corporate culture run amok in which a single executive recruits an army of clones to attack, behead and 'incorporate' an old money industrialist into their consumptive system. The film features an aggressive, stellar musical composition by Jim Guthrie. This is the first pixel film by SUPERBROTHERS.
Warnings: Some educational material, blood, violence.
Production notes: Very little is known about the creation process of this film, although recently discovered documents retrieved from the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics suggest that the original reel for the film dated back to the early years of the Stalin era.
