Art Of Investment: Germans opt for luxury amid crisis
Despite the European financial crisis, Germans are spending great amounts of money on luxury goods. With the euro's future uncertain, Germans are buying into the idea that saving is wasting. They are investing their money in real estate, art and jewelry, which they consider to be more durable. They are also taking the opportunity to invest in home renovations and are splashing out on medical procedures. Zimbabweans reflect amid recovering economy
Al Jazeera English is marking five years on air this month and looking back at some of the stories we covered on our first day of broadcast. One of those was from Robert Mugabe Street in the capital of Zimbabwe, a country in which the unemployment rate hovered at 80 per cent. Five years later, that has not changed. Charles Dambiranwa, a taxi driver in Zimbabwe, makes roughly $50 a day - enough to fill up his car and stay in business. But finding fuel was not always this easy. He remembers what Zimbabwe was like five years ago. Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Harare.

Enya - Amid The Falling Snow
Enya's Amid the falling Snow with relaxing winter scenes lyrics: How I remember sleepless nights When we would read by candlelight, And on the windowpane outside A new world made of snow; A million feathers falling down, A million stars that touch the ground, So many secrets to be found Amid the falling snow. Maybe I am falling down. Tell me should I touch the ground? Maybe I won't make a sound In the darkness all around. The silence of a winter's night Brings memories I hold inside; Remembering a blue moonlight Upon the fallen snow. Maybe I am falling down. Tell me should I touch the ground? Maybe I won't make sound In the darkness all around. I close my window to the night. I leave the sky her tears of white. And all is lit by candlelight Amid the falling snow.

Video of Gaddafi son Saif al-Islam amid cheering crowds in Tripoli
Follow latest updates on twitter.com and www.facebook.com Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi's son and one-time heir apparent Saif al-Islam is free despite earlier claims confirmed by the International Criminal Court and leaders of Libya's National Transitional Council that he had been detained by rebel forces. Seif appeared early on Tuesday morning at the Rixos hotel in Tripoli, where foreign journalists are staying under the close watch of Gaddafi regime minders. He then took reporters in a convoy on a drive through parts of the city under the regime's control. The convoy ended up outside Gaddafi's Bab al-Aziziya compound, where at least one hundred men were waiting in lines for guns to be distributed to volunteers to defend the regime. Greeting cheering supporters at the compound, Seif gave a defiant interview, accusing NATO and the West of sabotaging communications and spreading chaos and fear.

Irish continue to suffer amid economic crisis
It has been a year since Ireland called for international support to bail out its banks. Since then, statistics appear to show the economy has stabilised, but the economic situation for people on the ground is very different. There are more than 2000 abandoned developments, known as ghost estates, as the country's housing boom was found to be built on sand. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from central Ireland.

Goldman Banker goes Rogue amid the Fed's Recent Stress Tests w/Naked Capitalism's Yves Smith
Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. Goldman Sachs gets outed in a scathing resignation letter on the New York Times op-ed page today from executive director and head of Goldman Sach's US equity derivatives business in Europe, Greg Smith. In the letter, Greg Smith does not pull any punches. He says, in his letter, that the environment at Goldman Sachs is now "as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it." Greg claims that Goldman puts making money ahead of everything else, including ahead of its own clients who it regularly refers to as "muppets," sometimes over internal email. He also says that "today, if you make enough money for the firm (and are not currently an ax murderer) you will be promoted into a position of influence." An ax murderer?? It sounds like Greg Smith is describing a sociopath, not a 143-year old financial institution. But wait, it get's better. Smith also lists a three-step method for becoming a leader at Goldman Sachs today. He says that one should: a) Execute on the firm's "axes," which is Goldman-speak for persuading your clients to invest in the stocks or other products that we are trying to get rid of because they are not seen as having a lot of potential profit. b) "Hunt Elephants." In English: get your clients — some of whom are sophisticated, and some of whom aren't — to trade whatever will bring the biggest profit to Goldman. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't like selling my clients a product that is wrong for ...

Afghan tensions rise amid civilian and CIA deaths - 01 Jan 010
Afghanistan's government has stepped up its criticism over the number of Afghan civilians killed by Nato strikes. In the latest incident, eight people died in Helmand province and the government has demanded that foreign troops responsible for civilian deaths be handed over to Afghan authorities. The civilian deaths and political fallout come amid confirmation by the CIA that seven of its agents were killed in a suicide attack at a US base in Afghanistan the agency's worst one-day loss of life in eight years. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the bomber was an Afghan army officer who volunteered for the operation. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports.

Somali armed group lifts aid ban amid drought
The Somali group, al-Shabab, says it has lifted a ban on aid agencies operating in the parts of the country it controls. Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, an al-Shabab spokesperson said, "We have now decided to welcome all Muslim and non-Muslim aid agencies to assist the drought-stricken Somalis in our areas..." In some areas, one out of every three children is malnourished, in one of the region's worst droughts in 60 years. The UN says close to three million people in Somalia need emergency aid. Al-Shabab, which is said to be connected to al-Qaida networks in Africa and the Gulf, controls the majority of Somalia, including almost half of the capital, Mogadishu. In the past, they have said food aid creates dependency, but they have also used aid for themselves and charged foreign organisations high fees to operate. Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports.
