PS22 Chorus "Empire State of Mind Pt. XXII" Alicia Keys (Golden Goggles 2010 INTRO)
ps22chorus.blogspot.com http twitter.com Here the PS22 Chorus of 2011 tackle last year's chorus beloved rendition of "Empire State of Mind" by Alicia Keys & Jay-Z. This was just a quick teaser to open the show, and I'm extremely proud of the kids for how quickly they picked up this difficult arrangement at the 11th hour! Brianna ("Krispy Kreme") & Renee get major props for their duet! The Golden Goggles is ultimately a fundraiser in the form of an award ceremony, honoring a bevie of USA's top swimmers! The kids got high fives from many of them, including Olympic Gold Medal winners Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin, Ryan Lochte, and Summer Sanders (also on The Celebrity Apprentice)!

This is a drum cover of the song, "Empire State of Mind" which is a song by American rapper and hip hop artist Jay-Z, featuring vocals from R&B and soul singer Alicia Keys. It was released as the third single from Jay-Z's 11th studio album The Blueprint 3 (2009), from his Roc Nation label in October 2009. The song is an anthemic ode to both artists' native New York, and features a music sample of "Love on a Two-Way Street" (1970) by The Moments. The track was originally written after Brooklyn natives Angela Hunte and Jane't "Jnay" Sewell-Ulepic were feeling homesick while on an overseas trip in February 2009. The following month they sent the song in for consideration at Roc Nation, but the song received negative reviews. Initially discouraged, the duo sent the song to Jay-Z after being suggested to by an associate of EMI, and after an incident which they described as an omen. After hearing the song, Jay-Z immediately recorded it, having changed all of the verses, but keeping the hook. The track was supposed to feature Hunte on the song's hook, but when Hunte and Sewell-Ulepic were asked if they thought someone else would be more appropriate for the chorus, Hunte suggested Keys. Mary J. Blige was also considered for Keys' part, but Keys was chosen after Jay-Z heard the song's piano loop. The song was viewed as being an "orchestral rap ...

Of the records 15 tracks, only three songs find Jay-Z going it solo — the rest boast a kind of hip-hop all-star team. In addition to contributions from Kanye West and Rihanna on Run This Town and the previously reported collaborations with Drake, Kid Cudi and Mr Hudson, The Blueprint 3 will also feature appearances from Alicia Keyes, Young Jeezy, Swizz Beatz and Pharrell. Inside Top of World Trade Center on 9/9/2001 before attack
We were in NYC for the MTV Music awards, and the Michael Jackson TV special (at MSG). We left a couple hours after this was shot on 9/9/2001. Scary to think that less than 48 hours later- this wasn't there anymore, and all of our lives changed. Kinda surreal to see people enjoying boating and the last days of Summer below. Everything is so calm. I shot this while eating lunch with my wife at the Windows on the World restaurant in the North Tower. PROOF that this was on 9/9/01!!! superboat.com That is the boat race happening in the harbor on 9/9/01. You can see that in the footage.

Frederick AO Schwarz Jr., former chief council for the Frank Church Committee hearings, and Aziz Huq of the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law discuss their book Unchecked and Unbalanced: Presidential Power in a Time of Terror, discuss the Church committee investigations of the late 70s and the abuses they found, how things are even worse now, the impotence of the US Congress, how Bush has made our terrorism problem worse by torturing people and the false accusation that the Church Committee hearings somehow lead to September 11th. In a distinguished legal career spanning four decades, Mr. Schwarz has shown a unique ability to combine the highest level of private practice with a series of critically important public service assignments. In every case, Mr. Schwarz has handled these responsibilities with his trademark grace and insight. GUEST BIO
Sir Ronald Harwood is an author, playwright and Academy Award winning screenwriter who was a recipient of the Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in 2010 for his services to drama. He was born and raised in Cape town, South Africa, and moved to London at the age of 17 to pursue a career in the theater. When he was 25 and unemployed, he received a typewriter as a gift and wrote his first novel, All The Same Shadows.
Sir Ronald hasn’t stopped writing since that pivotal moment. He has worked steadily in the theater, writing the acclaimed play “The Dresser” in 1980. The play, based on Sir Ronald’s own experience as a dresser to the British actor Sir Donald Wolfit, was a sensation on the stage and was subsequently made into a film starring Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay. The film received a total of five Academy Award nominations, including a best adapted screenplay nomination for Sir Ronald.
In 2003 he won the Academy Award for “Best Adapted screeplay” for “The Pianist,” and was nominated again in the same category for “The Diving Bell and The Butterfly.”
He is also a prolific playwright who is the author of “Taking Sides,” which is based on the life of Wilhelm Furtwangler, the controversial conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic during the Nazi era, who was prosecuted after the war on charges of being a Nazi sympathizer. His most recent play “Collaboration,” is about the conduct of composer Richard Strauss during the Third Reich.
Filming is currently underway on a movie version of his hit play “Quartet.” The movie which marks Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut, stars Dame Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Billy Connelly and Tom Courtenay.

Digital Lutherie and Multithreaded Musical Performance: Artistic, Scientific and Commercial Perspectives (Sergi Jordà)
Keynote lecture at the 11th International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. 30 May - 1 June 2011, Oslo, Norway. http://www.nime2011.org
=== ABSTRACT
In 1982, I was studying for a B.Sc. in fundamental physics, when I first ever saw a computer and soon discovered the magic of computer programming. It was such a revelation that some weeks later I had decided to give up saxophone practice and free jazz in order to become a computer music improviser! Since then, I have pursued the complexity, delicacy and futility of real-time, multidimensional performer–instrument–interaction from different and complementary perspectives.
Initially I did this from a freer and purely aesthetically driven artistic/performer and freelance perspective, then trying to systematize and expand this empirical knowledge from a more scientific/academic point of view as a researcher at the Music Technology Group in Barcelona (1999–present), and more recently, also from an industrial/commercial perspective, manufacturing and selling new electronic musical instruments at Reactable Systems1 (2009–present).
Art, research and business seem three quite distinct activities, and yet I do not really experience it that way, perhaps because as I understand it, digital lutherie cannot work properly without any of these three legs. It has to inevitably start from music, from musical needs and realities, without walking blind or reinventing the wheel at every new step, and at last, without forgetting the potential user.
In this keynote lecture, I will give an overview of my journey from these three angles, with a special focus on what I call “multithreaded musical instruments,” the term that could define my main activities and research area for the last 15 years.
=== Biography
Sergi Jordà holds a B.S. in Fundamental Physics and a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Digital Communication. He is a researcher in the Music Technology Group of Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, and a lecturer in the same university, where he teaches computer music, HCI, and interactive media arts. He has written many articles, books, given workshops and lectured though Europe, Asia and America, always trying to bridge HCI, music performance and interactive media arts. He has received several international awards, including the prestigious Ars Electronica’s Golden Nica in 2008. He is currently best known as one of the inventors of the Reactable, a tabletop musical instrument that in 2007 accomplished mass popularity after being integrated in Icelandic artist Björk’s Volta world Tour.
