The Cumbria Shootings Documentary
The Cumbria shootings was a killing spree that occurred on 2 June 2010 when a lone gunman, Derrick Bird, killed 12 people and injured 11 others before killing himself in Cumbria, England. Along with the 1987 Hungerford massacre and the 1996 Dunblane massacre, it is one of the worst criminal acts involving firearms in British history. The series of attacks began in mid-morning in Lamplugh[4] and moved to Frizington, Whitehaven, Egremont, Gosforth and Seascale, sparking a major manhunt by the Cumbria Constabulary, with assistance from Civil Nuclear Constabulary officers.[5] Bird, a 52-year-old local taxi driver, was later found dead in a forested area, having abandoned his vehicle in the village of Boot. Two weapons that appeared to have been used in the shootings were recovered. There were 30 different crime scenes investigated, and police confirmed it was the worst incident of mass shooting in Britain since the Dunblane massacre of 1996, in which 18 people died.[6] The Queen paid tribute to the victims and the Prince of Wales later visited Whitehaven in the wake of the tragedy. The Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May also visited West Cumbria. A memorial fund has been set up to aid victims and affected communities.

Contestant Max made his way on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway to his key challenge and the Interceptor climbed along the train in pursuit of Max. Contestant Suzanne got soaked in Wast Water while trying to get her key. At the end of the episode, the Interceptor blocked the entrance to the Eskdale Outward Bound Centre where contestant Suzanne was coming but her partner Max grabbed her just in time before the Interceptor. Hartside Bank Cafe - Motorcycle Mecca Cumbria Northern England
Sunday 3rd of July 2011 - Hartside Bank Cumbria. The summit stands at 1903 ft, and the Cafe is at highest point of any cafe in England. Every Sunday hundred's of motorcyclists from across the North of England, Tyneside , Wearside, Teeside & the Northwest ascend the hill and relax, at the Cafe. I was a little late getting there but I still managed to get a little of the action. Billy Connelly even turns up on his trike with Evil Kinevil as pillion passenger? The Views are stunning from the summit on a clear day you can see the Solway, Carlisle, Penrith & a stunning panorama of the Northern Lake District.

Shap, Settle & Carlisle, The Cumbrian Mountain Express & The Statesman 10-03-12
A day of cloud, sun and breeze greeted passengers travelling on board the 3 railtours to grace The North West of England on Saturday 10th March. The action actually begins the day before with the light engine movement of 5043 & 6201 from Tyseley to Carnforth, seen at Leyland and Lancaster. We then move on to the main event, and Greenholme is the location as WCRC 47786 Roy Castle MBE & 47826 hammer up Shap at full power with Statesman Rail's 'Winter West Highland Statesman' from Nottingham to Fort William. Around 35 minutes later, a roar is heard in the distance and 5043+6201 come storming round the corner and up the 1 in 75 incline at around 70mph at the head of Vintage Trains' 'Shap, Settle & Carlisle' tour from Tyseley, which is then seen again maintaining good speed up the bank past Scout Green. Afterwards, there wasn't long to wait for Pathfinder Tours' 'Cumbrian Mountain Express' from Bristol Temple Meads to Carlisle and with DBS 67025 at the head. We then move on to the Settle & Carlisle and the Cumbrian Mountain Express, now with 70000 Britannia at the head storms towards Ais Gill at Stockber, just south of the half way point on the line. We then moved down to Crosby Garrett for the double header-or not as it turned out. With 6201 having failed with a hot box at Carlisle, 5043 was on it's own making a huge amount of noise on the climb up to Ais Gill, passing through the site of the old Crosby Garrett station before curving round towards Kirkby Stephen. Finally, an ...

Protecting river banks in Cumbria
In 2005 and 2009 the river Derwent, Cumbria experienced devastating floods. These floods and other high-flows of water eroded river banks to such an extent that natural recovery was not an option. The Environment Agency has been working with a number of different groups to help install 'soft engineered' river bank protection in rural areas.

Roman Helmet Found In Cumbria By Metal Detector Sold For 3.6 Million
Hello everyone, Treasurebone here. Hey I was looking through the news and I found a fascinating article from BBC News Cumbria about a Roman Helmet, complete with face mask, found by a metal detector enthusiast, who wished to remain anonymous. Now, this find took place back in 2010, so it isn't exactly fresh news, but it was unknown to me, so I thought some of you might have missed it too. I believe the reason this article showed up is that this helmet was due to go up for auction on Oct. 7th. Well it did. In all, there were 6 bidders battling for this helmet; 3 by telephone, 2 in the room and one via the internet from California. It was sold for £2281250 / $3629469 to an anonymous client bidding by phone." The Crosby Garrett helmet, named for the hamlet in Cumbria where it was found, is believed to be from the 1st-2nd century AD. And historical documents suggest that it would have been worn by a Roman soldier as a mark of excellence in horsemanship. In the times when this helmet would have been worn, the Helm would have been a polished bronze and the faceplate would have been a polished white metal. There may also have been colorful streamers attached to it. Christies auction house's London head of antiquities, Georgiana Aitken, said: "This helmet is the discovery of a lifetime for a metal detectorist." "When it was initially brought to Christies and I examined it at first-hand, I saw this extraordinary face from the past staring back at me and I could scarcely believe my ...
