Jim Ryun's High School Competition Only 3:58.3 Mile
Jim Ryun was the first US High School Miler to break 4 mintues in a High School Competition Only race. His 3:58.3 to win the mile at the 1965 Kansas High School State Meet is still the record for the fastest time ever in a race that includes only high school competitors. In 2011 Lucas Verzbicas also achieved the feat. Ironically it was in the Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile at Icahn Stadium in New York City in a time of 3:59:71.

Jim Ryun(WR)vs.Kip Keino,1500m.LA,1967
Ryun, just 20 and at his most awesome, takes a mind boggling two and a half seconds off of Herb Elliott's seven year old 1500 metres world record, beating his great rival Keino to boot. This, probably his finest run,was held in LA during a USA vs.British Commonwealth match in July,1967. With a last 800m in 1.51.3 and a closing 400m in 53.5 it seemed likely that Ryun would become the first sub 3.50 miler and next Olympic 1500 champion. Keino famously turned the tables in the Olympic Games the following year and Ryun, although turning in some fine times ,never seemed to run again with this intensity during the following seasons. A damned pity! (Oh,and apologies for the not great video quality!)

The camera didn't refocus as I panned back - that stinks. Also sorry that the video doesn't always follow the leaders - I was mostly filming this for our family, so relatives could see our son Billy Orman run. But I thought I would post it here anyway since there don't seem to be many home videos of the race. Not Billy's best day but still a great race to be a part of, and how many times do you run a 4:11 high school mile and get 14th place?! Congrats to Lukas V and all the other runners! And thanks to Adidas for putting this event together!

Kansas Athletics Throwback Thursday - Jim Ryun
When one mentions Kansas track and field it is hard not to hear the name Jim Ryun shortly afterwards. The Wichita, Kan. native burst onto the collegiate scene after becoming the first high school runner to achieve a four-minute mile. Ryun's prowess grew during his time at KU as he continued to set records and in the process make a name for himself in the sport on an international stage. Ryun competed in a total of three different Olympic Games, winning a silver medal in 1968 at Mexico City. All in all the Jayhawk turned international athletic marvel set a total of five world records during his illustrious career. Ryun continued to run following his collegiate and professional career, but this time in the political arena as he was elected to the US House of Representatives where he represented the second district of Kansas for a decade. Ryun continues to influence the sport he made a name for himself in, helping younger runners achieve their goals through 'Ryun Running' and the Adidas Jim Ryun High School Dream Mile.' www.kuathletics.com
