ISANG ARAW LANG UNITY RUN JAN.22, 2012
THE MANILA TIMES www.manilatimes.net A RECORD 209000 registered running enthusiasts participated Sunday's 2012 Kahit Isang Araw Lang : Unity Run which started and ended at the SM Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City. The second edition of the race surpassed the Guinness World record of 116086 participants posted in the Run for Pasig River on Oct. 10, 2010. Event organizer Ryan Ramos of Avant-Garde, said that several schools and running clubs all over Metro Manila as well as members of the Philippine National Police and Philippine Navy likewise made up the bulk of the participants. "As far as our record is concern there were 209000 who registered for the event. But many more came, who participated just for the love of running," said Ramos. However, broadcaster Daniel Razon, the brainchild of the project, said that they are not interested in the Guinnes World Record recognition, but mainly to develop awareness on doing good with every opportune moment by urging all to participate and realize their advocacy of providing computer facilities for public schools students. Ramos said that with the simultaneous stagings of the event in the cities of Cebu, Bacolod, Tacloban, Davao, Butuan and Puerto Princesa in Palawan, the overall nationwide turnouts exceeded the targeted 300000 runners. As expected runners from Kenya led by Alex Melly reasserted their superiority over their Filipino counterparts by dominating the 10-km category. Melly pocketed the P35,000 top purse, while ...

Visita Iglesia: Manila Cathedral
The Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica (also known as the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and informally as Manila Cathedral) is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila. It is located in the Intramuros district of Manila in the Philippines. The cathedral has been damaged and destroyed several times since the original cathedral was built in 1581; the sixth and current incarnation of the cathedral was completed in 1958 and was consecrated as a minor basilica in 1981. It is dedicated to the Patroness of the Philippines, Blessed Virgin Mary under the title Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

HARI NG TONDO
ASIONG SALONGA THE MANILA KINGPIN As a kid, I'm quite familiar with the movies of Joseph "Erap" Estrada. There are two (2) movies which I still fondly remember and impressed me a lot. One such film was when he portrayed the character of Diegong Daga. It was megged in 1968 but was shown at RPN9 every afternoon during Martial law. And of course, Asiong Salonga. I searched the web for the true biography of Asiong Salonga but found only one---a newspaper article about his death. I tried to look for any criminal case filed against him that reached the Supreme Court, but found none. I'll find time to seriously write a biography of Asiong Salonga very soon. I am also interested in his genealogy--where did he came from? The movie "Manila Kingpin" says that he was born and raised in Tondo Manila. Good. Were his grandparents, migrants from Pampanga, since most Salongas came from there.

VIEWPOINT PRESENTS VILMA SANTOS 1/6
Dong Puno is a Filipino television public affairs host, media executive, newspaper columnist, and lawyer. Ricardo Puno, Jr. was born on January 20, 1946 in Manila. Puno was previously Senior Vice President for News and Current Affairs of the ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation and Executive Vice President of the ABS-CBN News Channel. On top of that, he wrote articles for his column "My Viewpoint" first on The Philippine Star and later The Manila Times. He was host for a public affairs program, Viewpoints, shown on ANC. He is the senior partner of the Puno and Puno Law Offices, Vice President-General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the nation's flag-carrier, the Philippine Airlines (1986--1990 and 1978--1983) and a member of the Philippine Panel for International Air Negotiations (1979--1990). He holds a Bachelor's of Arts degree (cum laude) from Ateneo de Manila University (1965), a Bachelor of Laws degree (cum laude and salutatorian) from the same University in 1969 and a Master of Laws degree from the Harvard Law School. He was also a past president of the Manila Overseas Press Club. When President Joseph Estrada assumed power, Puno was appointed Press Secretary and ran unsuccessfully for a Senate seat in the 2001 senatorial race. After this debacle, he returned to the media profession and re-assumed his old position at ABS-CBN, but lost it anew after he chose to anchor the network's reformatted national late-night newscast Insider with Ces Oreña-Drilon in 2004. PAMBANSANG DAANGBAKAL NG PILIPINAS by Joel H Garcia
The Philippine National Railways (Filipino: Pambansang Daangbakal ng Pilipinas), commonly abbreviated as PNR, is a state-owned railway operator in the Philippines, operating an extensive railway line on the island of Luzon. PNR began operations on June 26, 1875 as the Ferrocaril de Manila-Dagupan, during the Spanish colonial period, and later becoming the Manila Railroad Company (MRR) during the American colonial period. Persistent problems with informal settlers in the 1990s contributed further to PNR's decline. In 2006, Typhoons Milenyo and Reming caused severe damage to the network, resulting in the suspension of the Manila-Bicol services. In 2007 the Philippine government initiated a rehabilitation project aiming to remove informal settlers from the PNR right-of-way, revitalize commuter services in Metro Manila, and restore the Manila-Bicol route as well as lost services in Northern Luzon. In July 2009, PNR unveiled a new corporate identity and inaugurated new rolling stock. The following photographs in this video were shot around 2007-2009. My experienced in riding and shooting the old PNR is such a great opportunity to document it's rotting & surviving condition, with the current PNR renovation and changes, these images are now just a memory of what the old Riles is used to be. www.joelhgarcia.weebly.com

An Interview with Mary Wilson of the Supremes
Mary: I gotta change shoes.
Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better.
Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on.
[applause]
Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick question. Mary, I wanted to -
Mary: Well, I need to explain something.
Stuart: Yes, my dear.
Mary: Okay, before we go any further. I’m not the founding - the only founding member of The Supremes, as most of you know. Florence, Diane and Betty McGlown, are the founding members of The Supremes, and I cannot take that credit all myself. So, the people here in the audience understand and know that, so, let’s make that very clear.
Stuart: Well, let’s start with the first question, I was watching you last night in the opening of the exhibition, singing, and sung a couple of songs for us, it was great, and one of the things that struck me is, actually, without any hesitation, I’d forgotten how great a solo singer you are, how great a singer you are. And I wonder if that actually, when we go back to The Supremes, there’s been criticisms in the past, for example, that Diana was actually the least good singer of The Supremes, she had a very specific voice. And I just wanted to get your thoughts about - just describe the different voices that were in The Supremes.
Mary: Well, I don’t think that you can - anyone said that Diane was the least good singer in The Supremes, that’s not true, and I’ve never ever said anything like that. My point was always to sort of bring forward the fact that Florence Ballard was a great singer, and I was also a good singer. So, I think people - and sometimes when we tried to explain or say things like that, people think that you’re saying that the other person is not that good. That was not my point, at all. My point was saying that Florence Ballad was a Gospel, strong singer, Diane was a pop singer and I was kind of, like, the ballad singer, so, we each had our own, you know, good points.
Stuart: And at a time, and in a city, which probably, without any hesitation, you could say was probably, at its time, the greatest musical city in the world, bar none. I mean, if you actually compare and contrast it with the other great regional city of the time, Liverpool, many of the Liverpool acts moved down to London and whatever, but there you were, in Detroit, touring the world, phenomenal place. Just to get some grasp on this, simply your high school alone, who did you go to school with?
Mary: Well, in Detroit, we all kind of grew up in the projects. Detroit was really a small - is, a small town. And Smokey Robinson, I guess, was in the same - lived in the neighbourhood as Diana Ross. I went to high school with some of The Miracles, which was Bobby Rogers. The person that did a lot of singing - or writing, with Smokey Robinson, was Al Gutierrez, Marvin Tarplin, and he and I went to high school together. Florence went to the same high school as some of The Temptations. So, we all came from pretty much the same neighbourhood, even though it was kind of large.
Stuart: And when did you first remember the sense that Mary Wilson had the desire to be a singer? Where did the desire come from?
Mary: Well, you know, people like Little Richard, you know, there was Jackie Wilson, there was Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers was one of my favourite ...
Stuart: He was a bad boy, though, wasn’t he?
Mary: He was a what?
Stuart: He was a bad boy.
Mary: I don’t know, I was too young.
Stuart: No, he was a very bad boy, Mary.
Mary: Well, you know, doctors don’t tell secrets on other doctors. But, we all kind of bad later on. But, yeah, you know, from just - oops, we don’t want to go there right now - but, anyway, when I was born, my mother said that when the doctors spanked me, I started singing. So, I mean, I did that, but I never ever thought that it was different, I thought that everybody woke up in the morning singing. You know, I thought that everyone did that. I didn’t realise, until I became one of the members of The Primettes, that that was something very special. Then I realised that that talent was special, but, prior to that, I would just, you know, woke up and start singing, " ooooooo," you know, whatever, and just ...
Stuart: And say a little bit about that photograph, because it connects you back to, like, many Detroit people of your generation, to the Souther

Every now and then, girls dream of the perfect guy for them and to live happily ever after. But based on most of the weddings we have covered, if there is one thing we learned, it is that if it's in God's time and God's perfect plan it will happen. With Carolyn and Joel, they made God the Steward and the center of their relationship and with that we know that they are and forever will be blessed. And if we may add, this wedding is truly God's answered prayer. So believe, have faith and enjoy this SDE we made especially for them. Cheers!

Board Time
In the third and final installment of the Stoke +63 series, Longboards Manila and ManilaMan Productions pop in on a downhill training session with the Longboards Manila team riders.
With seven local championships won, at least fifteen podium appearances, and two international competitions (and counting) between them, these guys are not only some the finest longboarders of the local Manila scene but through their example are true ambassadors of the sport, always punctuating the need for safety and respect for one another, the environment, and for longboarding itself. Perhaps we all can learn a thing or two from them.
Rafe, JV, Fern, Paolo, Arthur, and Joaquin, Longboards Manila is proud to support your skating and we wish you the best in all your endeavors always, be they on, or off, your boards.
As always this production would not have been possible without our friends at ManilaMan Productions:

Taylor Swift - The Last Time (Ft. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol) (Full Track) (Lyrics)
From Taylor Swift's 4th Studio Album - RED. THE LAST TIME LYRICS: Gary Lightbody: Found myself at your door, Just like all those times before, I'm not sure how I got there, All roads they lead me here. I imagine you are home, In your room, all alone, And you open your eyes into mine, And everything feels better, Both: Right before your eyes, I'm breaking, No Past No reasons why, Just you and me. This is the last time I'm asking you this, Put my name on the top of your list, This is the last time I'm asking you why, You break my heart in the blink of an eye. Taylor Swift: You find yourself at my door, Just like all those times before, You wear your best apology, But I was there to watch you leave, And all the times I let you in, Just for you to go again, Disappear when you come back, Everything is better. Both: When right before your eyes, I'm aching, run fast, Nowhere to hide, Just you and me... This is the last time I'm asking you this, Put my name on the top of your list, This is the last time I'm asking you why, You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye... This is the last time you tell me I've got it wrong, This is the last time I say it's been you all along, This is the last time I let you in my door, This is the last time, I won't hurt you anymore. Oh, oh, oh, This is the last time I'm asking you this, Put my name on the top of your list, This is the last time I'm asking you why, You break my heart in the blink of an eye. Thrilla in Manila (part 1 of 6)
No Soccermatch today but another historical sport event. I Hope you enjoy it :) The Thrilla in Manila is the third and final famous boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier for the Heavyweight Boxing Championship of the World, fought at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines on October 1, 1975. The bout is often ranked as one of the greatest fights of 20th century boxing, and is the climax to the bitter rivalry between Ali and Frazier over who was the legitimate Heavyweight Champion. That situation came about after Ali was stripped of the title over his refusal to join the armed forces when drafted during the Vietnam war. Some years later after repeated weekly prodding from Ali, Frazier petitioned President Nixon to restore Ali's right to box thereby bringing about the so called Fight of the Century between two undisputed heavyweight champions in 1971. During the whole period between their first and their last face-off in Manila, including the years which preceded the restoration of Ali's right to fight, Ali had used his wit, sharp tongue, and position with the press to take characteristic verbal pot shots at Frazier (as was his practice with all opponents—and which made good copy and controversy) but these became controversial and at times ugly, after his loss in the fight of the Century, and this verbal battery heated the rivalry into new territory. Both boxers battled each other into near incapacity, and Frazier's trainer determined he ...
