The North Isles are the northern islands of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. The main islands in the group are Yell, Unst and Fetlar. Sometimes the islands in Yell Sound are included in this group.
They are a significant group, since Yell and Unst are the second and third largest islands in the archipelago, and also the third and fourth most populous (Whalsay, which is not in the group, is the second most populous). Combined, their total land area is far larger than the rest of the Shetland Islands (excluding Mainland) combined.
The group also contains the most northerly land of the United Kingdom and Shetland at Out Stack near Muckle Flugga, and its most northerly settlement Skaw on Unst. These also happen to be the most northerly British territorial claims currently in existence, since Canadian independence, in contradistinction to those of Cornwall, which only represent the southernmost parts of the UK, and not those of British overseas territories, such as the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and British Antarctic Territory. In similar fashion, Britain's most northerly maritime claims are also based on these islands, having great effect on its fishing and oil industries.

Hello & Welcome to Harnetty Railways Coming up We have an afternoon with NELPG's K1 62005 Lord of The Isles. We start at Whitby were we see the K1 ready to run round. While we waited we watch 1 of my friends notifying the signalman that we have arrived at Whitby. Soon we see the K1 run round ready to do the 1T18 Whitby to Pickering service from here we join the train for the full length to Pickering. The K1 ran brilliantly on the Whitby to Grosmont section. Soon we arrived at Grosmont were we leave the national network to rejoin the NYMR line. Soon we departed after a crew change the K1 performed magnificently on the 1 in 49 climb to Goathland and to the summit of Moorgates. The weather between Goathland and Levisham was poor with heavy fog and the threat of rain before arriving int...

In March 2016 I made my first ever (and long overdue) visit to the Western Isles.....and was utterly blown away by the surreal landscapes and beautiful quality of light. In this blog I head to the highest point on North Uist to take in the vast watery panorama from its summit. Along the way I ponder the usual random collection of things - wildlife, weather, the Norse influence on our place names and even climbing in the Alps. Hope you enjoy!

http://VOKpodcast.wordpress.com/ — In their second in-depth foray into the lands beyond the Sunset Kingdom, the Vassals set sail to Sothoryos and its surrounding isles, before heading north to the vast Grasslands of Essos, and then norther still to the Shivering Sea. Join Duncan (Valkyrist), Greg (claudiusthefool), Patrick (Ser Patrick the Tall), Dan (witless chum), Augustine (linecom1), Michael (Khal Wadege) and newcomer Justin (uflGator1) as they ponder ramming techniques (naval and otherwise); butterfly napalm; early Australian settlement; the Dinopocalypse of the south; the Dothraki’s aggressive rural redevelopment program; frosty prophesies; Ibbenese wrestling moves; and the “phantom menace” that haunts Mossovy forest. With the help of Maester Yandel, they also speculate (wildly) on...
