Jerry Lucas - Mr. Tough Guy
Jerry Ray Lucas (born March 30, 1940) was a basketball player from the 1950s to the 1970s, and is now a memory education expert. In 1996, the NBA's 50th anniversary, he was named one of the 50 greatest players in National Basketball Association history.[2] He was named to Sports Illustrated's five-man College All-Century Team in 1999. Lucas was born in Middletown, Ohio, a community of 50000+ halfway between Dayton and Cincinnati which in the 1940s and 1950s boasted one of the most respected high school basketball programs in the United States. Lucas was already a playground legend by age 15, as he was already at almost his full-grown height of 6 ft 9 in (2.06 m). He had developed shooting accuracy as far out as 25 feet, and had trained his leaping ability and timing to become an amazing rebounder. Lucas was gifted with great hands, which he could use to dazzle onlookers with an array of magic card tricks, as well as with 20-10 eyesight. With a glut of big men on the team, the Warriors sent Lucas to the New York Knicks in 1971 for small forward Cazzie Russell. All the years and time on court made Lucas appear an old 31 years old. But New York expected Lucas to back up Willis Reed and Dave DeBusschere, two players he had often outplayed as a Royal. Lucas was willing to do nearly anything to win a championship at this point. So the All-Pro became a reserve. But early that year, Reed was injured, forcing Lucas into the lineup at his natural center position. Playing a style of ...

Jerry Lucas: From the Playbook to the Good Book
He may not have made the millions current NBA basketball players pull-in in fact, Jerry Lucas only made just $30000 in his first year in the league. However, it was still pro ball and Lucas walked away from it with three years left on a contract with the New York Knicks, not because of an injury but because of a higher power. The decision didn't exactly sit well with his teammates. "They thought I was crazy, giving up an NBA career," said Lucas, who was in Maumee speaking at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. "But I knew what I was supposed to do with my life. God called me to a ministry and I was going to be obedient to that so, I'm thankful I did." Lucas, who will turn 72 this week, has never looked back. "I never missed basketball. Not even one iota of a second." He says he's turned down millions of dollars in broadcasting opportunities to minister to 'about 30' churches a year. The 6-foot-8-inch, former two-time Mr. Basketball in the Buckeye State was named one of the '50 greatest' NBA players of all-time and won a national championship at Ohio State in 1960. He says he doesn't watch much television and hasn't seen much of this year's squad but does recall his three Final Four appearances. "We won one of them and lost two of them," said Lucas. "Both years we lost we were a better team but on that particular night we weren't. So, you have to be at your best at the right time and hopefully the Buckeyes will be." Lucas, who is also known as Dr. Memory for his uncanny recall ...

1966 G5 Celtics vs Royals playoffs assorted plays
I'm in the process of restoring coverage of the 1965 G5 (best of 3 series) 1st round playoffs: Cincinatti Royals vs the Boston Celtics. There's a lot of great live-action footage of 1960's basketball throughout, what I uploaded here is just a small fraction of the games coverage. At least 50 percent of the action during the game is available for me to upload when I finish fixing cleaning up the footage.

Nate Thurmond Scouts Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
A story told by Jim Barnett on how Nate Thurmond scouted Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) and successfully guarded him the next game. It took place on October 25th, 1969, Warriors won by 14 and probably due to Nate's great defense.
