US Library of Congress' Digital Collection One of World's Largest
The US Library of Congress is well known for being the world's largest library. That is, in the traditional, paper format. Now, the library is on the way to hosting the largest digital collection in the world with more than 700 terabytes of data. VOA's Zulima Palacio explored the "cyber" world of the Library of Congress and prepared this story. Carolyn Presutti narrates.

McIntosh County Shouters: Gullah-Geechee Ring Shout from Georgia
The McIntosh County Shouters perform Gullah-Geechee Ring Shout at a concert at the Library. Speaker Biography: The McIntosh County Shouters is a ten-member Gullah-Geechee group that began performing professionally in 1980. They have educated and entertained audiences around the United States with the "ring shout," a compelling fusion of counterclockwise dance-like movement, call-and-response singing, and percussion consisting of hand claps and a stick beating the rhythm on a wooden floor. African in its origins, the ring shout affirms oneness with the Spirit and ancestors as well as community cohesiveness. The ring shout was first described in detail during the Civil War by outside observers in coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. Its practice continued well into the 20th Century, even as its influence was resounding in later forms like spiritual, jubilee, gospel and jazz. By the late 20th century, the ring shout itself was presumed to have died out until its rediscovery in McIntosh County in 1980; thus, the beginning of the McIntosh County Shouters. The group was awarded the NEA National Heritage Fellowship in 1993, and were selected as Producers of Distinction and Founding Members of the "Georgia Made Georgia Grown Program," in 2009. Their performances include the National Black Arts Festival, of Smithsonian Folklife Festival, World Music Institute, and Sound Legacies at Emory University. The group has been featured in magazines and documentaries, including <b>...</b>

Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse at the circus
SUMMARY An animated cartoon about the adventures of Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse at the circus, where they demonstrate their courage to each other by attempting to scare a woman. Surprisingly, the animal hero became widely popular in American animation only in the 1920s, especially with "Felix the Cat," The earlier Krazy Kat series (1916-29), based loosely on the comic strip by George Herriman, features lovelorn Krazy and the brick-tossing object of his strange obsession, Ignatz Mouse. As with the next four films, these brief films were initially part of William Randolph Hearsts International Film Service newsreels. CREATED/PUBLISHED United States : [International Film Service, 1916]. NOTES Copyright: International Film Service, Inc.; 17Mar16; MP574. Story, George Herriman. MPAA shows how to videorecord a TV set
At the DMCA 1201 hearings at the Copyright Office at the Library of Congress, representatives from the MPAA showed a video demonstrating how users can videorecord a TV set. They argue this is an acceptable analog alternative to breaking copy protection on a DVD.
The hearings occur every three years to determine whether the Librarian at the Library of Congress (through direction of the Copyright Office) should create exemptions to the anti-circumvention provisions in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
In 2006, film and media professors were granted an exemption in order to break copy protection on DVDs so that they could utilize high quality video clips in classroom teaching. Up for consideration during the 2009 exemption hearings is whether this exemption should be extended to apply to faculty teaching in all disciplines, and whether the exemption should apply to students.

ZeroMQ is the answer, by Ian Barber
http://www.phpconference.co.uk/talk/zeromq-answer
Using Mikko Koppanen's PHP ZMQ extension we will look at how you can easily distribute work to background processes, provide flexible service brokering for your next service oriented architecture, and manage caches efficiently and easily with just PHP and the ZeroMQ libraries. Whether the problem is asynchronous communication, message distribution, process management or just about anything, ZeroMQ can help you build an architecture that is more resilient, more scalable and more flexible, without introducing unnecessary overhead or requiring a heavyweight queue manager node.
Ian is the development manager at Virgin Management in London, and has been working with PHP since 2002. He was formerly Delivery Manager for Ibuildings, where he worked with a variety of large enterprise clients across the UK and Europe. He is a regular conference speaker, and is interested in search, data processing, machine learning and natural language processing. Ian blogs about these topics and more on his site, PHP/ir.

The enchanted drawing
SUMMARY From Edison films catalog: Upon a large sheet of white paper a cartoonist is seen at work rapidly sketching the portrait of an elderly gentleman of most comical feature and expression. After completing the likeness the artist rapidly draws on the paper a clever sketch of a bottle of wine and a goblet, and then, to the surprise of all, actually removes them from the paper on which they were drawn and pours actual wine out of the bottle into a real glass. Surprising effects quickly follow after this; and the numerous changes of expression which flit over the face in the sketch cause a vast amount of amusement and at the same time give a splendid illustration of the caricaturist's art. 100 feet. 15.00. Although this is not an animated film, the origins of animated film can be glimpsed here. J. Stuart Blackton, then a cartoonist for the New York Evening World, is photographed in Thomas Edisons New Jersey ""Black Maria"" studio performing a vaudeville routine known as the ""lightning sketch,"" supplemented by stop-camera tricks that bring the drawn objects to life. Copyrighted in 1900, it was probably filmed three or four years earlier.CREATED/PUBLISHED United States : Edison Manufacturing Co., 1900. NOTES Copyright: Thomas A. Edison; 16Nov1900; D21656. Guitarist Chris Hillman at the Library of Congress
Rock pioneer Chris Hillman talks about the craft of the songwriter and about his prolific career. Speaker Biography: Chris Hillman began his career playing guitar and mandolin, later becoming a bass player, a songwriter and a vocalist. The Byrds' first single, a cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man," was a huge international hit and marked the birth of the musical genre "folk rock." During the mid-1960s, The Byrds ranked as one of the most successful and influential American pop groups, recording a string of hits including "Eight Miles High," "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" and "Turn! Turn! Turn!" With the departure of David Crosby and Michael Clarke from the band in 1968, Hillman and his new partner Gram Parsons changed the Byrds' musical direction, helping to usher in a new era of music known as "country rock," when they recorded the album "Sweetheart of the Rodeo." Hillman's work with The Flying Burrito Brothers reflected the eclectic musical interests of a generation. Returning to his bluegrass and country roots in 1987, Hillman joined the Desert Rose Band, which enjoyed a string of 16 top country hits. They also garnered a number of awards from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. Hillman is considered a notable artist across several genres, influencing country rock and roll, folk rock and pop music. His songs have been covered by artists such as Sheryl Crow, Beck, Rose Maddox and Emmylou Harris. Hillman's latest album <b>...</b>
