Ladies in White visit Holguin, Cuba

On July 07, 2013, more than two hundred women who form the group Ladies in White attended mass in various churches in different regions of Cuba. After attending mass at the Santa Rita de Casia church, 75 women marched in protest of the lack of freedom. In the province of Holguín, there was a report of two members of the Ladies in White being detained at their homes by the police. There was a strong police presence outside of each of the various churches where the members of the Ladies in White attended mass. [00:00:11,878] On Sunday, July seven, more than two hundred women who are part of the movement Ladies in White, Laura Pollán, attended mass in different regions of the country. Seventy five women marched down Fifth Avenue in Miramar, after attending mass at the church of Santa Rita de Casia, located in the capital municipality of Playa, in Havana. Belty Cantillo, the representative for the movement in Santiago, Cuba, reported that a total of forty six Ladies assisted mass at the Cobre Sanctuary. [00:00:44,600] She explained that in spite of the visible police presence of the Rapid Response brigades, there were no detentions in that area. In the province of Holguín, twenty six women were able to arrive at the Jesucristo Redentor church, while two were detained as they left their homes. Bertha Guerrero Segura, the representative of the women in Holguín, stated that the two women detained were Lizbeth Peña and Carmen Oropeza. [00:01:15,710] There were no reported detentions in the rest of the provinces. Activists reported that the virtual presence of throngs of paramilitaries outside of the various churches frequented by the Ladies, were noticed, but without any incidents occurring. In the province of Guantanamo, Rosaida Ramírez, the representative of the movement in that city, stated that thirteen women were able to arrive at the Santa Catalina de Ricci church, where they attended mass without any incident taking place. [00:01:46,780] Leticia Ramos said that in the Parrish of Cárdenas in the province of Matanza, twenty six Ladies in White attended mass. The Ladies in White from the central regions provinces of Ciego de Ávila y Santa Clara stated that four and six women, respectively, were able to attend the religious services.
